Nothing happened over the weekend. No news. Or it’s possible that I didn’t sleep well over the weekend and am half-assing this. Um, the legislature starts today. So that’s something.

It’ll cost Republicans tens of millions for an otherwise safe seat.
And, because Trump is doing this shit in every state, it will keep The Big Lie as the defining campaign theme from now into 2025, and beyond.
The Republican Party is literally tearing itself into shreds over one sad loser’s fragile ego and the humiliation of his ignorant followers. But they are being very successful at getting the political media to focus elsewhere. That helps a little. So far. But the efforts to distract may run out of steam if a) Trump continues to escalate; b) the pandemic crisis eases; and c) Democrats develop adequate message discipline.
What do we talk about?
– President Biden’s unprecedented success at rescuing the nation and the economy from Trump’s enormous failures.
– Congressional Democrat’s unprecedented success at passing landmark legislation supporting the Biden recovery.
– The Republican Party tearing itself apart at Donald J. Trump’s insistence. And their longing to do the same for the rest of us using mob violence and authoritarianism.

Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
7,
I don’t really think so.
Of course, most of them are vaccinated and boosted themselves.
And probably no more than a dozen Congressional Republicans drink pee. But only recreationally with no expectation that it would protect them from a deadly infectious disease.
But I do think most of them would prefer to see more Americans go unvaccinated because of how that will continue to prolong the pandemic and disrupt the economy. In particular, I think they are in love with how the media have become obsessed with every single potential speculative reporting detail about “COVID disruption” because of how it suggests “danger”, “risk”, or “suffering” to an increasingly restive and fragile audience.
We’ve gone from breathless (and entirely unfulfilled) predictions of EMPTY SHELVES to what is now supposed to be a “potato crisis”. I did not actually think a “potato crisis” was even possible.
It gives the media something to report, especially something “dire” which keeps people doom-scrolling and driving revenues. And that gives Republicans confidence that they can leverage “crisis” into a referendum on leadership and restore them to power. Which is what got us into the crisis to begin with.
Certainly, on some distant, abstract level Republicans recognize that prolonging the pandemic will kill people, mostly their own voters. But never forget that most Congressional Republicans hold relatively safe seats in protected districts or empty, rural states. There’s less risk to them individually and personally.

I lack Doctor Dumbfuck’s ability to predict stocks. All I know is what I see and read. For example, this CNBC story says, “Strategists do not foresee other major indexes or sectors making the same dramatic move for now, though they may face a pullback,” and quotes one Lori Calvasina, head of U.S. equity strategist at RBC, as saying, “I would say I’m still within the category of any kind of broader market downturn would be in the 5% to 10% range, as opposed to 10% to 20%. 10% to 20% would be a growth scare, and I don’t think we’re in a growth scare.”
I doubt Ms. Calvasina has a reliable crystal ball, but I think she’s better positioned than Doctor Dumbfuck to make educated guesses; and it appears she doesn’t think he’ll get his 10%-15% correction unless something causes a “growth scare.” So, I’m inclined to think for now that he’s fucked.

Nasdaq closed above 16,000 on exactly one day in the last 12 months. That was Nov. 19, closing at 16,057. It closed today at 14,942, which is a decline of 6.9%, nowhere near a 10% correction, using the one-day high as a baseline. You can’t do fucking math, either.

Operation will continue as it reverts to owner BNSF. Just a couple years ago, MRL owners were lobbying the Association of American Railroads and the Surface Transportation Board to increase the revenue threshold of Class Is, because all that bridge traffic was pushing them to thae threshold at the time.

@40 I don’t know what to make of the unidentified aerial phenomena. I’m skeptical it’s extraterrestrial. Given the trillions of stars in the universe, it seems certain that technological civilizations exist or have existed on other worlds, but the distances are too great to make interstellar travel realistic. Unless there’s a shortcut through space that our physicists don’t know about, how would they get here across the vast distances of space?
A vehicle launched by a civilization a million light-years away, traveling at nearly the speed of light (if that’s even possible), would need over a million years to get here. And how would it send signals back to its parent civilization? Even if it could accurately aim those signals at a receiver, it would take over a million years for the signal to return “home.” So you’re really talking about an ET civilization that has to be within relatively few light-years of us, and the odds of such a civilization, coincident in time with ours, are dramatically smaller.
Based on what we do know about physics, our presence on earth would be detectable via the broadcast signals we’ve sent into space, or lights from our cities, only a little over 100 light years out. The odds of technology-enabled intelligent life co-existing in time with us within that range are small indeed. And even if one is there, it’s not guaranteed they’d detect us.
While this doesn’t rule out alien visitors (which most likely would be drones), I think the odds are far greater that these phenomena, whatever they are, originated here on earth.
My best guess is that governments don’t tell the public what military technologies they’re developing, and they have to test those gadgets, so unless it some sort of optical or electronic illusion, it would most likely be something from somebody’s skunk works, and most likely but not necessarily ours. Anything the size of an aircraft is hard to hide; if you take it out of the hangar and fly it, somebody will see it, so you’ll need a cover story to explain it away.
This is the sort of thing governments lie about. If our government says, “it’s not ours,” that doesn’t prove it’s not ours. It’s also possible China has something we don’t. Russia, less likely. Aliens, maybe, but that explanation makes the least sense of all. Consider human psychology. People’s imaginations tend to run wild when they see something they don’t understand or can’t rationalize.
Roger Rabbit spews:
I’m simply saying the extraterrestrial explanation is the least likely explanation, but the first explanation most people will resort to upon seeing a technology they’re unfamiliar with.

House committee has now revealed that the forged certificates of ascertainment falsely certifying elections wins for Trump in Arizona and Michigan, were prepared by Republican National Committee member Kathy Berden of Michigan with the assistance of the Republican electors from each of those two states.

RedReformed spews:

It looks like criminal fraud to me.
The whole thing in Michigan began with a bit of fraud-theater on December 14th of last year when a Chicago attorney with the Thomas More Society led a group of Republican state lawmakers who attempted to disrupt the official state certification ceremony by presenting the false electors in person. That attorney claims the faked documents were prepared and delivered “just in case”.
I don’t think he’s a very good attorney. And I think he’s now facing bar discipline because of this stunt. And my guess is he’ll be receiving a subpoena to appear in Michigan. He should exercise his right to remain silent. But I have my doubts that he will.
Since these nice people licked stamps and put the documents into the U.S. postal system they’ll probably also face federal mail fraud charges.
As a reminder Trump fell short in Michigan by 154,000 votes and did not present any official request for a recount nor challenge the official state count.
The names of the co-conspirators to the fraud who posed as electors are: Kathy Berden, Hank Choate, Amy Facchinello, Clifford Frost, Stanley Grot, John Haggard, Mari-Ann Henry, Timothy King, Michele Lundgren, Meshawn Maddock, Marian Sheridan, James Renner, Marya Rodriguez, Rose Rook, Ken Thompson and Kent Vanderwood.
Local media who had been alerted by the Republican group witnessed Michigan state police turning the group away and preventing them from disrupting the official electoral proceedings that day. The House committee has learned that it was Republican National Committee member Berden who then sent the faked documents to the National Archives and to the office of the Vice President. It is not yet known if any of the other participants in the attempt to disrupt the state proceedings assisted her with that.

In 2000 Gore was shut down for two reasons:
• The US Supreme Court repeatedly told Florida’s supreme court that its decisions were unconstitutional. The second time, it did so in a 7-2 decision. Scalia’s words in a subsequent interview: “…not even close.”
• Gore spent so much time protesting that he didn’t contest soon enough, and essentially ran out of time.
If Trump 2020 was going to be successful, it had to not only convince the courts of the merits of its claims, but it had to have its ducks in a row so that the states at issue could have its (Republican) EVs counted. This is the “just in case” basis for the duplicate documents.
Gore, had he been successful at SCOTUS in 2000, would have needed his own set of FL duplicate – “forged”, using your terminology – documents in order to move quickly enough to have his elector slate in FL counted.
Florida 2000 taught both sides not to dawdle.

Who knows? Maybe some day these dreams of your will come true.
But as soon as you present those documents to any authority with the intention of deceiving them about your qualifications or your wealth then you will have committed an act of fraud.
The preparation of the documents would not be the act of fraud. Even placing the documents into a fancy embossed leather portfolio, dressing yourself up in a rented suit, calling the local media, and then presenting yourself with your documents at a rented lectern in a landscape truck yard would not be an act of fraud. But applying for a loan with them would. Or trying to pass them at a local hospital.

Hard to imagine who would have been behind that.
Bush v. Gore was behind that.
There isn’t enough time to get everything done, include myriad recounts. SCOTUS wasn’t going to change the deadline, which is what Gore needed if he was to eventually prevail. So red states – all states – know that they have to have their own electors already in place, RTG, for the federal court push. Hence the dueling elector slates. “Forgery” is a misnomer.
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
Unfortunately for Republicans and “conservatives” the 2024 nominee failed to make any mention whatsoever of dead birds or butt flashlights or nuclear strikes on hurricanes during his abruptly terminated interview aired this morning on NPR.
In nine minutes the 2024 nominee devoted only two to any topic other than his historic loss in the 2020 election. And he reiterated his intention to make his humiliating 2020 defeat by President Joe Biden the centerpiece of the 2022 and 2024 campaigns.
Biggest tell:
“The number of ballots doesn’t mean anything. It’s who signed the ballots. Where did the ballots come from.”
The problem for “conservatives” isn’t that Trump won’t shut up about his humiliating failure. The problem for “conservatives” is that in talking about why he was so thoroughly defeated he explicitly lays out the Republican plan to win: 1) eliminate ballots cast by the wrong people; 2) eliminate ballots cast in the wrong places.
He’s saying they object to the people who voted and they object to the places where they live. He’s saying those people should not have their votes counted.
Vicious Troll spews:
@ 89
Richard Posner’s book, Breaking the Deadlock: The 2000 Election, the Constitution, and the Courts, includes a strong argument that had Gore moved nearly immediately to contesting the election rather than spending so much time in the protest phase, things might have turned out differently for him. There were other problems, of course, including Gore’s initial effort to cherry-pick the counties he wanted to be recounted, and the Florida Supreme Court’s repeated decisions later found unconstitutional by SCOTUS. All of that wasted precious time.
The falsity of “forgeries” will be clear in future elections, when the Democrats fall short and run to the courts for relief. That’s when QoS McHillbilly will explain it in more eloquent and smarmy terms than I can manage.
I can wait.
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
87,
As I pointed out previously to the pathetic, dissembling, shambolic incel troll, safe harbor provisions in the 3 USC sec 5 are irrelevant. I have no idea what orifice he pulled this out of (the less I contemplate it the better).
The ruling relates to the manner in which ballots are counted as they implicate the Equal Protection Clause. The holding was that the Florida Supreme Court order for a manual recount would be unconstitutional on those grounds. The court found that the mechanisms for the manual recount being ordered would have resulted in disparate treatment for certain ballots and thus voters. This has less than nothing to do with acts of fraud being perpetrated in an attempt to overturn an election after the state has certified its unambiguous ballot counting results. It’s pure distraction.
The question however remains whether or not any of the forged documents discovered by MSNBC were also delivered to the Vice President and the National Archives in an attempt to defraud those offices and agencies and disrupt the election. At least in the case of Michigan the documents were.
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
91,
you just can’t help yourself. You do stupid. And then you double down on stupid.
“Contesting an election” has a specific legal meaning in each state.
I await your offer of citation to the relevant Michigan statute that calls for forged election certification documents as part of a lawful election challenge.
No citation and you’re an idiot.
Again.
Surprise.
BTW, “Gore’s initial effort to cherry-pick the counties he wanted to be recounted” was in fact the issue at stake in the holding you quoted. You fool.
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:

It’s perfect.
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
So just how deep is our shambolic dissembling incel troll into the Trump Stop the Steal/Patriot Purge delusion?
Yesterday Bob gave us Ray Epps. Epps is an Arizona Republican who owns a wedding and event venue who traveled to The Capital on Jan 6 and took part in rioting outside. He’s never been arrested because he never entered the building. He appears on video outside yelling and screaming, just like 3000 other Trump voting older white folks frustrated that their fears and obsessions no longer define society, and egged on by a humiliated loser at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue. Epps has testified under oath that he is not “a fed”. Public records identifying him and tracking his activities and whereabouts are readily available. There’s almost nothing special about him. But Bob can’t quit him.
While this is ongoing, FOX and their leading prime time star Tucker have been trolling their audience of drooling mouth breathers with this guy:
https://www.kmov.com/news/cardinals-superfan-addresses-being-at-u-s-captiol-during-jan-6-insurrection/article_67806cc4-6f3e-11ec-8261-6f3bf53f36db.html
Tucker identifies him as “clearly a law enforcement officer” and an “agent provocateur” who infiltrated the Jan. 6 mob to make Donald Trump’s supporters look bad. Tucker began using Rally Runner to stir up idiots like Bob back in December, demanding to know “Who is this person and why hasn’t he been charged? That’s a simple ask.”
Rally Runner also never stepped inside the building. Mr. Runner (his legal name) is a regular fixture at Cardinals games, has a promotional business related to his unique persona, is available for promotions and events, and has a large and moderately monetized social media presence. He has yet to be deposed under oath. But it seems unlikely that “the feds” would hire someone so public and prominent to serve as a “secret, undercover agent provocateur”.
Stop the Steal, Patriot Purge and related Qanon conspiracies will never stop. And as long as all they need to reanimate their own delusion is another random rally attendee appearing on video yelling at a camera they’ll never run out of potential “feds” planted in the crowd as Crysis Actors.
I think the next time a U.S. Senator demands that an FBI official account for one of these losers the answer should be a curt “Let’s go Brandon!”
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
This morning, following months of evidence gathering, depositions, and prolonged negotiations toward a criminal immunity agreement, Rep. Matt Gaetz’s former live-in sexual partner testified before a federal grand jury in Orlando Florida. The woman and her attorney were identified as they entered the court this morning. Neither the woman, her attorney, nor the AUSA have been willing to comment on her testimony so far.
The woman, a former staffer, who has previously stated that she was in an “open” relationship with the Florida Congressman since 2017, accompanied him on a trip to the Bahamas along with Joel Greenberg and allegedly several underage teens for a weekend of sex and drugs paid for by a donor. Greenberg has since pleaded guilty to sex crimes in an 88 page plea in which he also agreed to cooperate and testify. Early reports indicated that the woman had offered her cooperation as early as May of last year. But it appears that prosecutors struggled to reach an agreement on immunity in exchange for her cooperation.
That prolonged negotiation would suggest that her cooperation may include her admission to having committed crimes of her own while witnessing crimes of others. We may expect entry of a plea agreement to those crimes by her and her lawyer later this week or next. If that happens it would indicate that an indictment against the Congressman is imminent.

Forgery is not a misnomer when you use a state seal on an official-looking document that is not official and you have no authorization to use that seal.
Shortbus tried to use the same “alternative slate” argument in a comment on Handbill.US, which apparently is the rightwing argument du jour circulating on r/w platforms, to which I replied:

Vicious Troll spews:
@ 93
“Contesting an election” has a specific legal meaning in each state.
And at some point you’re beyond dealing with the state judiciary and you are forced to jump to the federal system. Bush v. Gore as a federal suit was to stop unconstitutional activity at the FL state judiciary level – remember, it was a 7-2 SCOTUS decision that the FL supreme court was deciding incorrectly, when the latter court ignored the per curiam SCOTUS ruling. If something has to happen by the safe harbor date you had better have your docs in place to get what you want at the federal level, and that means an elector slate of your own.
Don’t tell me that the necessary timeline doesn’t require planning numerous steps ahead of what any lower-level court may be considering. Both sides learned important lessons from 2000.
Defending “forgery” is beneath you, QoS McHillbilly.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@91 “There were other problems, of course, including Gore’s initial effort to cherry-pick the counties he wanted to be recounted”

This is all of their brains on Trump.
They can’t help it anymore. It’s a bug burrowing into the basal ganglia forcing them to stare blankly and groan out rote memorized garbage. And because this shit now defines them it will also define everything they say and do going forward. It’s no longer a choice. Bob should have quit this hours ago. He can’t.

Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
108, 110, 111,
Bob, you just spent the last two days promoting and defending absurdly impossible and humiliating lies on behalf of Donald J. Trump, almost certainly because he demands it of you. He will be your nominee in 2024. And he will define your midterm strategy. You have no choice. You will do and say as you are told, no matter how ridiculous, stupid, or humiliating it may be.
So it really doesn’t actually matter how Biden polls.
Trump still defines your day and your news cycle. With him you lose. Without him you lose. The polls have nothing to say about it.
And you did this entirely to yourselves.
Vicious Troll spews:
The Q poll was conducted January 7-10, and only 50% of the respondents think the January 6 Capitol storming was an attack on democracy that should never be forgotten.
In August that number was 57%.
Y’all libbies are losing the messaging war. By November that number will be 40%, and by November 2024 it will be 30%. It won’t help that there won’t be any substantial number of people charged with “sedition”, and possibly none. But everyone will know who Ray Epps is and why the FBI is desperate to prevent this.

@112 I’ll bet Biden would poll better against Trump or DeSantis than he does on “Approve – Disapprove.”
Because no matter how awful voters might perceive him to be, they’ll think Republicans are worse, as was demonstrated in Nov. 2020.
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
Without Trump you lose 20 to 25 million general election voters nationwide.
This is why you suck his cock so greedily.
Without Trump your turnout numbers collapse. You’ve lost too many key demographics since 2016. Especially suburban women. You need his excess turnout. It is just that simple. If Trump disappears you can expect to have some isolated success in states and districts where you manage to run just the right kind of “moderate” “centrist” Republican. But we know those will be isolated. Because Trump’s Bundyville followers now define your primary contests in more places than you can control. Evidenced by the plain fact that you Bob have now become one of those Bundyville followers, spouting rote-memorized idiocy about “FBI plants” and “alternate slates of electors”. Nice.
But always remember, Trump won’t disappear.
Vicious Troll spews:

You’d win that bet, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit. In this poll (Harvard/Harris)

vote for?
Biden got 45%. The problem is, Trump got 48%.
Thanks for playing, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit.
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
Trust me Bob. I’m a proud Democrat.
I’ve heard this one before. Every single year, in fact.
Including the years when we’ve handed you your asses.
I’ve come to regard it as a natural artifact of having a more diverse and widely educated/widely read base. We don’t have the crutches you “conservatives” rely upon to prop us up in defiance of objective reality. And it doesn’t help that the “liberal media” play into it, preferring a “persuasion” model of the electorate over a “turnout” model.
But there has never been a more potent turnout signal in modern politics than Donald J. Trump. He knows it. And you know it too, even if you are ashamed to admit it. That’s what you’ve got to admire about Ted Cruz. No shame at all.
Vicious Troll spews:
@ 122
But there has never been a more potent turnout signal in modern politics than Donald J. Trump.
Here’s where your rationale fails you, QoS McHillbilly:
Trump also drives Democrat voter turnout, which is the only reason you got 81 million votes for a fossil. If Trump isn’t there in 2024, what DNC nominee will turn out Democrats against the GOP nominee?
There’s Michelle O. Who else?
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
Congratulations! For the first time a very long time you are right about something. Buckle down and really apply yourself and maybe you can make a habit of it.
But here’s two things about that.
As long as Trump is around, shitting himself on NPR, or falling down ramps, or endlessly talking about JOO SPACE LASERS, or whatever the latest lunacy may be, and especially as long as there is a highly profitable cottage industry of Trump surrogates living every day in the national media doing even worse, then Trump can drive Dem turnout, even if he isn’t on any ballot.
And as long as Trump is around, Republican candidates will have to answer for him wherever they face a competent Democratic challenger.
We can run on Trump. You can’t. You can only run Trump himself. Which isn’t actually better for you.
And here you were hoping you’d be running on Afghanistan.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@121 Here’s a couple of interesting data points from that poll:
Biden/Trump/Don’t Know
Men 43% 50% 7%
Women 46% 46% 8%
Urban 56% 36% 8%
Suburban 48% 44% 8%
Rural 63% 30% 7%
Rural goes 63%-30% for Biden? Huh?
and
If the 2024 election for President were held today and it
was between Ron DeSantis, the Republican and Joe
Biden, the Democrat, who would you vote for?
Biden 43%, DeSantis 36%, Don’t Know 21%
If the 2024 election for President were held today and it
was between Ron DeSantis, the Republican and Kamala
Harris, the Democrat, who would you vote for?
Harris 42%, DeSantis 37%, Don’t Know 21%
Substituting Harris for Biden gets DeSantis a measly 1% more — and he still badly trails her. Looks like she’s not quite as unpopular as you claim.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@124 The best thing doc and his tribe have going for them is the IQ curve. Only half of us can be average or better, which means they have an ample supply of dummies.
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
125,
Rural goes 63%-30% for Biden? Huh?
Yeah. Huh indeed.
It’s a problem with labels in polls like these. Where do they come from? How are they arrived at? What are they actually measuring?
If it’s response by postal code, then how are they splitting “rural”/”suburban”/”urban” postal codes? If they leaned their suburban/rural split one way that would explain a lot. Lots of vigorous data out there indicating suburban decline for Trump. If they split or weighted against “suburban” and in favor of “rural” then I’d expect to see a result like that.
There’s a history in polling of big fights over this shit. And COVID only makes it much worse. ZOOM-from-“home” means “home” can be almost anywhere. Some of the conventional geographic alignments may weaken and campaigns could mistakenly reach very bad conclusions as a result. Redistricting committees too.
