Good morning.

It looks like bird flu is becoming a problem in humans. This is scary shit and will probably get worse in the Trump Administration. It’s something that a competent administration could dealt with, but we have seen that they are not a competent administration when it comes to disease management.

It seems from the article that Washington and Oregon are doing a better job of testing people than Idaho. Still, the diseases don’t stop at state borders.

Prisoner CNN helped free from Syrian prison was actually notorious Assad regime torturer: report

The prisoner CNN helped free from a secret facility in Syria was actually a notorious member of Bashar al-Assad’s forces known to torture those who refused to pay him off, according to a shocking local fact check.

The network went viral last week with footage of the startled prisoner being led from the prison by journalist Clarissa Ward, who called it “one of the most extraordinary moments I have witnessed” in her 20 years of reporting.

But “independent and unbiased” fact-checkers Verify-Sy published a detailed report Sunday saying that the seemingly innocent prisoner was actually Salama Mohammad Salama — a first lieutenant in Syrian air force intelligence with a long history of alleged war crimes.

    CNN glorifies war criminal.

FBI searches a defendant’s house with search warrant, and the house of his in-laws where he lived at a relevant point in time.

The searches do not turn up the defendant’s cell phone, which is one of the items they were searching for.

They go to the grand jury several weeks later and obtain an indictment that charges the defendant with “Obstruction” for having “discarded his phone to hinder the investigation by the grand jury.”

The “evidence” of “discarding” his phone — as testified to by the FBI Agent in trial — is that that they didn’t find it in the two places they looked.

With the stupidity that characterizes all of his policies, Trump is proclaiming that he will fire federal workers unless they return to their office spaces.

    https://www.rawstory.com/working-from-home-trump/

The dumbfuck claims he reads Barrons before I do, so he’s surely aware that Barrons addressed the issue of remote work this weekend (Dec. 16, 2024, print edition, pages 26-27). What they said was studies show that companies who forced workers back to the office didn’t see any improvement in accounting or stock price performance, but did experience collapses in employee satisfaction. (Which presumably affects productivity.)

Of course, if you make people show up, you have to provide expensive office space for them. And while the federal government has a lot of office space, most of it is old, and much of it isn’t adapted to modern work.

    https://federalnewsnetwork.com/federal-report/2023/12/a-federal-return-to-office-wont-solve-the-governments-office-space-problems/

And then there’s the matter of labor shortage. Barrons says there are 20 million Americans with disabilities, and you can expand the labor pool by allowing them to work remotely.

Final thought: Has Trump promised to be in the West Wing five days a week? No working at Mar-a-Lago, or spending work days on his golf course?

If a business can steal from you, they will. That’s why we need government regulation of business.

The Federal Trade Commission finalized a new federal rule Tuesday that bars hotels and live-event companies from tacking on surprise fees when customers make purchases, deeming them unfair and deceptive practices.

The regulation would require companies to disclose any annoying “convenience,” “resort” or “service” fees upfront with the advertised price so that buyers don’t face sticker shock when they try to check out online. It is slated to go into effect as early as April 2025.

    https://www.huffpost.com/entry/ftc-junk-fees-trump_n_67618cf2e4b0b7b77895d168

Hidden fees are consumer fraud. Trump’s incoming FTC chair was the only commissioner to vote against the rule, contending he’s not in favor of gouging customers, but rather on the grounds Biden’s right to govern expired on Nov. 5, or words to that effect, which sounds like typical Republican double-talk to me.

Can’t Bring Yourself to Type the Word “Ass”?

Eager to share our brilliant political commentary and blunt media criticism, but too genteel to link to horsesass.org? Well, good news, ladies: we also answer to HASeattle.com, because, you know, whatever. You're welcome!

HA Commenting Policy

It may be hard to believe from the vile nature of the threads, but yes, we have a commenting policy. Comments containing libel, copyright violations, spam, blatant sock puppetry, and deliberate off-topic trolling are all strictly prohibited, and may be deleted on an entirely arbitrary, sporadic, and selective basis. And repeat offenders may be banned! This is my blog. Life isn’t fair.
