I’m actually having a hard time finding videos of “what the ‘protesters’ do to Jewish students.” I’m finding videos of TV pundits talking to each other, of students talking to reporters, and of police arresting protesters.
The Supreme Court upheld the right of Nazis to march in Skokie, Illinois, at the time a majority-Jew city where many Holocaust survivors lived. This right also applied to the tiki-torch marchers in Charlottesville. Jewish students may find the pro-Palestinian protests obnoxious, but the First Amendment protects offensive speech.
Marjorie Taylor Green can say “liberals” should be executed all she wants. But under our criminal laws, threatening a specific person is assault, and hostile physical contact, even if only grabbing a sign out of someone’s hands, is assault and battery, for which perpetrators can and should be arrested and prosecuted.
It’s standard police practice to separate demonstrators and counter-demonstrators, with a police line between them, to prevent physical contact between opposing groups. That would apply to these protests if pro-Israel demonstrators confront pro-Palestinian protesters.
Keeping the campus safe is a legitimate objective of university administrators and police. Individuals who threaten the safety of others can and should be removed. But protesters can’t legally be arrested because someone finds their speech objectionable.
Sometimes you just have to grow a hide. Veterans returning to campuses in the 1960s encountered protesters chanting “Ho, Ho, Ho Chi Minh, the Viet Cong are gonna win.” It may have grated on students who very recently had been fighting Viet Cong, but it wasn’t threatening. Jewish students may complain that “river to sea” chants are antisemitic, but like Nazi chants and swastika flags it’s protected speech.
There are anecdotal reports of Jewish students being harassed and intimidated. Such conduct is not protected and action can be taken against it. Those same reports suggest that in at least some instances it’s “outsiders,” and it doesn’t take much imagination to figure out who that might be. Anyone harassing students can be trespassed and removed from campus.
There are right ways and wrong ways to protest. Injecting antisemitism into pro-Palestinian protests is a mistake because it alienates people and hurts their cause. These protesters are young, and maybe some of them are stupid, just as you’re old and stupid. If you want some slack, you should cut them some slack, because what goes around comes around, homophobe.

In our country, antisemitic speech is not illegal, but there’s a strong cultural taboo against it because antisemitism has a history of leading to violence against Jews.
Many thoughtful people argue that criticizing Israel’s behavior isn’t antisemitic. We’re seeing in Gaza and and the West Bank what you get when hard-right politicians are in charge, and even many Israelis are uncomfortable with what Netanyahu’s government does. It wasn’t so long ago there were large protests in Israel against him.
Some Jewish students at Columbia have relatives in Israel. Some other students there have relatives in Gaza and the West Bank. With war raging in Gaza, there will be tension between these groups. The job of university administrators is to manage those tensions in a way that preserves a safe learning environment. Some member of Congress, of both parties, have been too quick to jump on them, because there’s a learning curve and they have to grope their way through this.
But for a simple-minded dumbfuck, a beyond-stupid two-word phrase sufficed: FINISH THEM. You can’t expect someone who routinely espouses punishment without trial to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate protest. He’s the last person I’d look to for wisdom on that subject.

Merchan had particularly unkind comments to share with The Rapist’s lead attorney Todd Blanche during the contempt hearing.
I’m happy to see it. But I have some misgivings about the propriety of what Merchan is doing. A judge should be very careful about intervening between a criminal defendant and their attorney, especially in open court on the public record.
It seems the gist of what Merchan is trying to convey to Blanche is that he is losing confidence in the lead defense attorney’s ability to communicate effectively with his client about very important matters. And he must be losing patience. But it still seem premature at this stage to be directly challenging the attorney’s credibility in front of his client. And it’s at least a little bit premature and potentially improper to be going around the attorney to interrogate the defendant directly.
Either Blanche is able to effectively communicate the meaning and limits of the gag order to his client or he is not. If Blanche has reached the point where he is declaring to the court that he is unable to effectively communicate with his client (I don’t believe he has) then the proceedings should be paused and the defendant given an opportunity to find new, more effective counsel. The Rapist is not particularly unique in this respect, even though the media will treat him this way. It’s not that uncommon for a criminal judge to have to intervene when a true meeting of the minds cannot be acheived between a defendant and their counsel. Sometimes it can be the attorney’s fault. But ususall it’s because the defendant has problems with cognition, memory, comprehension, intellectual capacity, and orientation to the proceedings.
Those things may indeed be true in this case. But until Blanche is willing to say so to the court, the judge should focus his inquiry on the defendant’s counsel and he should refrain from directly criticizing the relationship between the defendant and his counsel.
If Blanche has reached the conclusion that Trump is incapable of understanding a simple order from the court then he must inform the court. If on the other hand Blanche has reached the conclusion that he is unable to effectively communicate a simple order from the court to his client, then he must instead inform the court of that. All of this seems to me to be dancing around the central question of whether or not Trump The Rapist understand the order. If so, then he is in contempt. If not then it is not for the court to concern itself with exposing the intellectual and emotional frailty of the defendant. That’s a political question that has no place inside the trial. This is a criminal defendant on trial for his freedom. Upon conviction he stands to face a very long criminal sentence in prison. The court must not allow such an outcome to follow from a breakdown of communication between a defendant and their attorney, regardless of the reasons for that breakdown.
If Trump is an intellectually incompetent, emotional infant incapable of understanding a court order then his attorney has a legal obligation to inform the court. And the court should not be drawn in to any effort to avoid that admission.

This morning I’m reading news story after news story about the protesters and police alike saying the problems are being caused by non-student “professional agitators who show up at every protest” (police description).
From the beginning of the war, I saw disturbing suggestions in news stories that influential pro-Israel bigwigs (the “Israel Lobby,” if you will) were trying to silence any public or media criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza.
While the evidence isn’t convincing yet, it increasingly looks like universities are trying to silence the students’ peaceful demands for a ceasefire and divestment from Israeli investments.

– An admission that non-student agitators are “abundant” on campus, and a tacit admission they might be behind some of the more unruly behavior by pro-Palestinian demonstrators.
– A female Jewish student sobbing for unspecified reasons.
– A claim that calling for a ceasefire, and Palestinian freedom, is illegitimate, marginalizes Jews, shoves them out of public spaces (see, e.g., video here), and constitutes persecution of Jewish students.
This last item exposes this gentleman’s real agenda: Silencing Israel’s critics and enforcing an Israel-can-do-no-wrong speech code on campus.
That, quite frankly, is un-American.
U.S. soldiers fought and died by the hundreds of thousands to free Europe from Jew-murdering Nazis. The U.S. has given Israel vast moral and material support, and used its diplomatic resources and good offices to try to broker peace between Israelis and Palestinians, part of which is a two-state solution. But Israel’s current hard-right government doesn’t want a Palestinian state; it wants to expropriate more Palestinian land and kill Palestinians. Most Americans, including yours truly, support the concept of Israel, and want it to survive and thrive; but some of us don’t support this. To call that antisemitic, illegitimate, and persecution of Jews is bullshit.
He can lambast protesters who support Hamas or call for violence all he likes, and I’ll join him in that. But lumping peaceful protesters calling for a ceasefire and an end to the killing of Palestinians with those agitators is intellectually dishonest. Moreover, this kind of inflammatory rhetoric makes it that much harder to tamp down passions and reduce the tension of the moment; maybe it bucks up the spirits of a Zionist student here and there, but it’s not helpful in any other way. In my opinion, he’s part of the problem, not someone who can contribute to a solution.
Israel alleged that a employees of a U.N. aid agency participated in the Oct. 7 attacks, so the U.N. commissioned an independent review, and this is what they found:
– The aid agency has given Israel its staff lists since 2011, and Israel never complained about anyone on those lists.
– Israel has not provided any evidence to support its allegations that “a significant number” of aid agency employees are “members of terrorist organizations.”
– The agency’s political neutrality guidelines weren’t always adhered to, especially in social media posts.
A separate investigation will determine with any of the aid agency’s employees were involved in Oct. 7; this report doesn’t address that.
