The other day the NYT ran a blatant copaganda lie as a headline. The headline claimed that homicides in NYC had doubled overnight. They put quotes around the claim. But neither the claim nor the quote were correct. Homicides in NYC did not double. And the quote from the reporter’s source, who is a retired cop, was that “homicide caseloads” had doubled “overnight”. Which also just so happens to be completely untrue and could have easily been fact checked. Homicide caseloads are about the same going back for a few years.
Even when the retired cop complained about being misquoted in the headline the NYT editors let the headline stand. Some small percentage of readers who read all the way seventeen paragraphs into the story might have learned that the retired cop only claimed that caseloads had doubled “overnight”. But even that bit of deliberate exaggeration was unchecked and unchallenged. So the vast majority of NYT readers went away completely misled and lied to by the reporting, and especially the headline.
I don’t think CNN or any media company should employ Chris Cuomo. But in terms of lasting harm to the company and the audience, I think the “wedding girl” text is nothing compared to the NYT blatantly lying to twenty million New Yorkers leading them to falsely believe there is a murder epidemic or a cop shortage. And nobody gives a single fuck.
Believe me so-called “reputable” news gathering companies do this exact shit every single fucking day. They lie to us. Every day.
