Monday Morning Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Monday, 5/8/23, 8:04 am

– Oh look, the transit tunnel is back to almost normal hours today and then full hours tomorrow.

– Here’s something cool Portland is doing with safe rest villages.

– And cool that here in Seattle, the first new affordable housing high-rise tower in decades is opening.

– Get vaccinated or boosted. It’s well past time. Just, fucking get it done.

    From the affordable housing article:

This model — where two nonprofits partner to build something big — could be repeated as Sound Transit expands and has more surplus land to get rid of.

Al Levine is the former deputy director of Seattle Housing Authority. He’s more cautious about this approach. He says it’s important to understand that free land from Sound Transit isn’t really free.

“Let’s call it what it is: Transferring the cost of affordable housing from affordable housing developers to Sound Transit,” Levine said. “Is that the right thing to do from a policy perspective? Probably not, really. Sound Transit’s dying, dealing with costs. Not dying, literally, but Sound Transit’s burdened with costs that everybody and their brother is putting on them. You know, Sound Transit could have fixed a hell of a lot of escalators with that money.”

I think Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit is gonna be even happier with Sound Transit now that he knows that tax dollars he has paid to ST have been repurposed to create crash pads for the criminals who will rape and rob his family.

Oh, and it ain’t just Sound Transit who will be stuck with the consequences of those escalators in disrepair:

Former Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile later said she lost sleep when the poll came out, suggesting Biden and his team have failed to connect with voters, Mediaite noted. According to the poll, 58% of Democratic-leaning voters would prefer a candidate other than Biden, who sank to his lowest approval rating in the new poll — 36%.

“It kept me up,” Brazile. “They are still unable to get a real good, strong message to the American people, not just on the accomplishments, but where they want to take the country.”

It gets even harder for Gavin Newsom to become president.

California Defaults on $18.5 Billion Debt, Leaving State Businesses Holding the Bag

With an unpaid federal unemployment insurance loan, the federal government raises the unemployment insurance tax immediately by 0.3 percent on each business within the state, and an additional 0.3 percent each year after that until the loan is fully repaid. The normal federal unemployment insurance tax rate is 0.6 percent per year, which means that California businesses will be paying several multiples of the normal federal tax rate before the loan is retired.

The state’s Legislative Analyst Office predicts that repaying the loan through higher taxes on businesses is not expected until 2029 or 2030 and note that retiring the debt could take longer, depending on the state’s economic performance. A recession would almost certainly delay repayment, and the odds of a recession in the next seven years are significant.

The state’s decision to default is inexcusable. California recorded a nearly $100 billion state budget surplus last year, thanks to the state’s top earners, that could have been used to repay the debt. The state received $27 billion in federal COVID aid it could have used to repay the debt. The state’s record $300 billion–plus 2022–23 budget could have retired the debt. Even after defaulting, the state could have resumed its payments this year and offset the tax burden on businesses, as it planned to do in its 2023–24 budget. But as the state’s finances continue to decline, the state has walked back making payments or offsetting higher business federal unemployment insurance taxes.

The silly twat who enabled $32-plus billion in fraud in CA is now a Biden nominee.

Regarding accountability, the head of California’s labor department during the pandemic was Julie Su, who served as California’s labor commissioner between 2019-2021. She is now U.S. Assistant Labor Secretary and has been nominated by President Biden to succeed former Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh, who resigned to head the National Hockey League’s player association. Republicans, led by California freshman House representative Kevin Kiley, have opposed this nomination, and this has coordinated broader opposition to Su among business groups.

Su was confirmed as US assistant labor secretary in 2021 by only a 50–47 vote, with those opposing her citing California’s pandemic unemployment debacle that took place on her watch, and her support for California’s controversial 2020 law that makes working as an independent contractor in many occupations in California illegal. Now, as she awaits a Senate confirmation hearing to become U.S. Secretary of Labor, California’s failure to repay its federal loan has put the spotlight back on California’s awful EDD performance.

I’m sure that both Manchin and Sinema will vote for her, so no worries.

    Yes, that was sarcasm.

Aside from the ponderously repetitive near formality of his reflexive mass quoting and sharing every single bit of news that he comes across that seems the least bit negative about “The Great Leftist Conspiracy”, there’s something impossibly convoluted about it all. Too much of it completely depends upon this “inside baseball” perspective into public policy, combined with careful cherry-picking, and then some incredibly tenuous and even bizarre connections.

Low income housing = escalator malfunctions may be a typical example. But it sure as fuck isn’t an isolated one.

And it seems like this is the case for much of the “conservative” political space these days. They keep making arguments to swing voters about some bizarre-as-fuck “danger” they swear is “looming” based on a complex set of beliefs that mostly exist only on AM Hate radio. I think that’s part of why they keep extending their unbroken losing streak.

@24 No, it’s not impossible, if what Raw Story posted is inaccurate. Each of those Raw Story posts is subject to positive proof. Either the Brownsville car driver has a criminal record as described, or he doesn’t. Either the woman walked away from the gun range with a machinegun, or she didn’t. Either Giuliani made the “jackass” remark on a radio program, or he didn’t.

If it’s impossible, what makes it impossible is the stories are true, and have been accurately reported. Doc makes no attempt to delve into that; he simply says, “Raw Story, uh-huh,” and winks and nods.

But that’s not the same as saying “Gateway Pundit, uh-huh,” or one of his other favorite “sources,” because Raw Story isn’t a Gateway Pundit.

23 people signed this cable. The Biden administration is petrified that some very highly placed people will be outed as having been proven prescient and correct, if it releases the cable.

GOP committee chair threatens Blinken with contempt of Congress over Afghan withdrawal information
Rep. Michael McCaul is seeking a cable that reportedly cautioned that Kabul could collapse soon after U.S. troops withdrew from Afghanistan.

State Department employees can use the “dissent channel” to communicate dissenting foreign policy views with senior officials. A Wall Street Journal article said the cable warned that the Taliban could seize control of Kabul soon after U.S. troops withdrew from Afghanistan.

In late March, the committee issued a subpoena to Blinken over the cable. On April 27, the State Department gave the committee a briefing on the cable’s contents and its official response. The department also provided Congress with a one-page summary of the dissent cable, as well as with a summary of the official response that came in at just under one page, according to McCaul’s letter. The letter adds that the actual cable is four pages long.

“It is inherently problematic for the Department, which is the subject of the Committee’s investigation, to be permitted to withhold key material evidence and substitute its own abbreviated characterizations of that evidence for the original documents,” McCaul wrote in his letter.

Someone should raise this issue in a debate with my corrupt, incompetent, senile fossil of a president.

City officials approved an ordinance on April 10, making it a crime to “inject, ingest or inhale” hard drugs in public — a departure from the state law passed two years ago that did the opposite and decriminalized drug possession.

The city council’s decision to get tougher on drugs was spurred in part by the death of the 5-year-old girl — which led to the arrest of her parents and another person, who have all since been charged with murder — and two teen deaths.

    @ 70

kreepshit still believes in the Bob Menendez fucking fantasy..

Queen YLB, HA’s unserious twat, fails to recall that Barack Obama’s Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, believed in it enough to indict Menendez for it:

Specifically, the indictment alleges that, among other gifts, Menendez accepted flights on Melgen’s private jet, a first-class commercial flight and a flight on a chartered jet; numerous vacations at Melgen’s Caribbean villa in the Dominican Republic and at a hotel room in Paris; and $40,000 in contributions to his legal defense fund and over $750,000 in campaign contributions. Menendez never disclosed any of the reportable gifts that he received from Melgen on his financial disclosure forms.

According to allegations in the indictment, during this same time period, Menendez allegedly engaged in three efforts to use his Senate office and staff to advocate on behalf of Melgen’s personal and financial interests. First, Menendez allegedly pressured executive agencies in connection with a conflict between Melgen and the government of the Dominican Republic relating to a disputed contract that Melgen purchased to provide exclusive screening of containers coming through Dominican ports. Second, Menendez allegedly advocated on behalf of Melgen in connection with a Medicare billing dispute worth approximately $8.9 million to Melgen. Third, Menendez allegedly took active steps to support the tourist and student visa applications of three of Melgen’s girlfriends, as well as the visa application of the younger sister of one of Melgen’s girlfriends. Throughout these efforts, Menendez allegedly engaged in advocacy for Melgen all the way up to the highest levels of the U.S. government, including meeting with a U.S. cabinet secretary, contacting a U.S. Ambassador, meeting with the heads of executive agencies and other senior executive officials and soliciting other U.S. Senators, all in order to assist Melgen’s personal and pecuniary interests.

The preceding is from the DOJ press release. Must have been pretty strong evidence to indict a sitting US Senator in one’s own party, Queen YLB.

Two of 12 jurors believed it, Queen YLB:

But after a seven-week trial, jurors in Newark said they could not reach a verdict and told reporters they had been deadlocked 10-2 for acquittal.

In a Clarencian (see what I did there?) twist, jurors believed that a US Senator could receive gifts of that nature without acting illegally.

Menendez’ own Democrat colleagues were not as charitable:

In a letter released on Thursday, the Ethics panel declared Menendez “knowingly and repeatedly accepted gifts of significant value from Dr. Melgen without obtaining required Committee approval, and that you failed to publicly disclose certain gifts as required by Senate Rule and federal law. Additionally, while accepting these gifts, you used your position as a Member of the Senate to advance Dr. Melgen’s personal and business interests.”

The Ethics Committee’s letter is signed by all six senators on the panel, including three Democrats — Sens. Chris Coons (Del.), Brian Schatz (Hawaii) and Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.).

Finally, Queen YLB, this upstanding Senate Democrat is under investigation – again – by federal prosecutors in SDNY. They work for Democrat Merrick Garland, who was appointed by Democrat Joe Biden and confirmed by a Democrat-majority Senate:

Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., is paying tens of thousands in legal fees and is setting up a legal defense fund in connection with a federal criminal probe, according to campaign finance records and a spokeswoman for Menendez.

The new filings reveal payments totaling roughly $200,000 to two law firms and a document search company since the beginning of the year.
    …
Sources have said Menendez is under investigation in connection with a Weehawken, New Jersey, meat company that won an exclusive contract with the government of Egypt to certify halal exports worldwide. Several officials have said owners of the company, IS EG Halal, have given expensive gifts to Menendez’s wife in the past.

NBC News previously reported that dozens of federal grand jury subpoenas were issued in connection with the investigation, led by the U.S. attorney’s office for Southern New York.

Sources have said prosecutors are looking into whether Menendez used his role as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which oversees $2 billion in aid to Egypt, to help the New Jersey company secure the contract.

If you’re going to cut and paste at least give my website credit.

    https://www.republicanleader.senate.gov/newsroom/research/senate-republicans-are-shoulder-to-shoulder-with-speaker-mccarthy-on-debt-limit-negotiations

Or at the VERY least reorder the quotes so the plagiarism isn’t obvious.

But there’s a reason I selectively chose a couple quotes and then edited them down….like this one.

“Probably everyone’s rooting for the speaker and the president to come to a deal,” said Rep. Scott Peters (D-Calif.), a member of the bipartisan group. He said he wasn’t going to dictate what the president and speaker should do, but added: “I think more discussion or exploration about where people are, what would work, is helpful — and that’s why we did what we did.”

And the ones we left out.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told reporters Thursday he didn’t expect any Democrats to support McCarthy’s offer and reiterated that they could talk with Republicans once they produced a budget. “I don’t know whether reasonable people would conclude that we should be negotiating against ourselves. That’s not a logical place to be,” he said.

Well a mere 2.5 hours of deliberation to come to a guilty verdict on the former President of the United States on a battery accusation is pretty compelling that there was NO REASONABLE DOUBT on the preponderance of evidence.

But it wasn’t a real trial. The only real trial would have been held in front of an all white male jury at the Villages. Those were crisis actors. The jury form is actually made from Shihuahuaco wood paper suggesting it was smuggled in by Hugo Chavez.

In its verdict today, a Manhattan jury found Brett Kavanaugh liable for sexual assault against Christine Blasey, when both were high school students in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

The jury assigned compensatory damages of $250 million and defamation damages of $2.5 billion.

The jury also found against Mark Judge, ruling him liable for being too drunk to stop the assault, and against Leland Ingham Keyser, ruling her liable for memory failure.

    102,

Everyone everywhere is very eager and hopeful that Republicans from both chambers can work out their differences.

But absolutely nobody knows how Brave Kevin and Cocaine Mitch will manage to do that. Brave Kevin wants to keep his job as Speaker at least through next year. And Cocaine Mitch would like to keep alive his shot at getting back his old job as Maj Ldr next year.
But these two key Republican objectives are irreconcilable. And they aren’t the only ones.

At least until that basic political conflict among Republicans is ironed out, there is nothing else to negotiate. And the debt default bomb remains theirs to defuse or at least delay. For all our sakes President Joe Biden is happy to act as their marriage counselor.
All the rest of us can do is hope for the best.

The right question is whether Congress — after passing the spending bills that created these debts in the first place — can invoke an arbitrary dollar limit to force the president and his administration to do its bidding.

The Debt ceiling has always been unconstitutional; its a usurpation of Presidential power.Congress cannot simultaneously authorize spending but then cause default if the Exec branch spends authorized dollars.

To reiterate, the House bill uses 2022 spending as a baseline, which means an immediate upfront 9% spending cut. But as the Pentagon, Social Security, and Medicare are exempt from cuts, it’s effectively a 22%-30% cut for the rest of government, including the FAA.

Then it caps spending growth at 1% a year, with no adjustments for inflation or population growth, which translates into ongoing spending reductions every year after the initial cuts. But the cuts won’t be evenly spread across government; the EPA will completely go away, while ethanol subsidies won’t be touched. Auditing rich tax cheaters will be a thing of the past, which will reduce federal revenue, necessitating further spending cuts.

And Republicans want Democrats to negotiate on this?

  136. 136

    Roger Rabbit spews:

I’ve said all along that Democrats should act more like Republicans. They should pass a bill in the Senate that imprisons all Republicans, confiscates their property, and sends their children to orphanages — then negotiate up from there. It’s exactly the same in principle.
