218 isn’t necessarily the number.
The rule is that the speaker must obtain an outright majority of the votes by name. First the Democrat appointed as clerk takes attendance to establish a numerical baseline for 50% + 1. There can be absences. But obviously with only a ten vote potential numerical majority Republicans cannot afford to have too many potential members stay home and molest children in the parks bathrooms. So the starting majority number is likely to be 218. But because of the rule any potential member who elects to vote “present” reduces the overall total of “votes by name” and thus the target majority. But once again with only a ten seat potential majority Republicans can’t afford too many votes of “present” before the 212 Democrats in attendance will constitute the majority.
So a lot will depend on how the five potential members who oppose Brave Kevin choose to signify that opposition, what they hope to gain from it, and how Brave Kevin has responded. It should go without saying that under these circumstances the Democrats will be on their best behavior to have all potential members immediately present, crisply saluting, and ready to all cast a vote by name for the Jeffries. So that obviously establishes the most baseline number for Brave Kevin at 212 of his potential members showing up and casting a vote by name to block the Democrats. The real question focuses on how he manages the other ten votes from his party only five of which he really controls.
Given the math and the significance the first order of priority for Brave Kevin is to nail down the 212. That’s not as easy as it sounds. The members are not actually members until the newly elected Speaker can swear them in. So everything gets put completely on hold. And he’s going to have members who want to leave. He’s going to be confronting an opposing minority he has spent months threatening who will be as uncooperative as the rules allow. And until he wins the ballot he’s not in charge.

It would of course be the ultimate act of unbelievable suicidal, self-destructive hubris and stupidity for Republicans to squander their very narrow numerical majority in the House to lose the Speaker’s ballot to Jeffries. Under the established “norms” of a new Congress competent political professionals act with discipline to protect their own collective interests. And to do this they manage the numbers and ensure that the unthinkable can’t happen.

Because with nineteen of his own members publicly going on record in open session opposing him by name as the next Speaker the next vote will probably get worse. There are likely as many as a dozen low ranking and newly minted MAGAt House Republicans too scared to openly voice their opposition who are now feeling a little bit more courage.
All we’ve heard about for weeks has been the tireless and steady negotiations Brave Kevin has been engaged in to persuade the “five” opponents. In fact it would appear that Kevin isn’t even in the ballpark yet. As I said before, with all members present and voting by name the starting baseline for Brave Kevin is 213. As of this first vote he remains ten votes shy of that most minimal starting number. Whoever the fuck the Republican Speaker is going to be they have to be able to obtain at least 213 votes by name to defeat Jeffries as a starting point, before worrying about persuading opponents to switch to voting “present”. Brave Kevin is not even close to that.
I’m guessing this is going to go on for a while. And as it does it will get uglier.

The Clerk of the House is the presiding officer running things until Republicans can pull their treasonous incompetent shit into a pile and call it “Speaker”. She’ll go strictly by the book. She’ll keep holding roll call voice votes on a schedule until they get it done. One way or another. And one of those ways is that Jeffries and Pelosi have already approached six or more Republican members willing to break ranks to vote for a consensus moderate from their own ranks. Once roll call starts it can’t be stopped. So if they have such a plan in place it isn’t going to be known until the last minute. And in order to be of practical use it would need to be a Republicans who would be able to gain the approval of at least half of all the other Republicans (111) rather than just the six(ish) needed to get to 218.
The longer things go on, with more votes, the riskier it becomes for hardline ultra-MAGA Republicans hoping for scorched earth partisanship and Trump “payback”. Brave Kevin was presumably hoping to get them to see this. But that obviously hasn’t been very successful. Because that would require that ultra-MAGA “QUALITY” Republicans were not fucking insane.
Too late for that.
With the second ballot still underway, enough Republicans have voted for a member other than Brave Kevin to force a third ballot.

For as long as everyone has known the ultimate truth of this, there will always be those who believe they alone can be the exception. Kevin saw his future in January of 2021. And he seized it. He knew the electoral shift that would come in the fall of 2022. And so he led his minority in turning their backs on democracy and the rule of law for the sake of Trump, but also for his own sake. It’s the elephant in the room (npi). And it will be with him forever.
