Monday Morning Links

by Lee — Monday, 11/15/10, 9:57 am

– Vivian McPeak on cannabis and cancer.

– Glenn Greenwald on Obama’s 180 on trying Khalid Sheikh Muhammad in Federal court.

– Adam Serwer explains how Eric Cantor is accusing himself of committing a felony.

– Steve Elliott writes about an unscrupulous medical marijuana dispensary owner in Tacoma. This man was in the audience at the CDC’s forum with 36th LD Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles and when given a chance to ask a question of the Senator, he ranted a bit about how government regulation would doom his business. No kidding.

    Sounds like Karzai in Afghanistan wants us to withdraw. Um, then we certainly should. If the current government does not support a mission of continued or increased operations (toward what end? please explain), then we should leave, because to do stay without government support and cooperation will be to fail (to do whatever we’re trying to do). Besides, if you care about “the deficit,” then we should be pursuing cost-effective, proven operations against terrorists than a big pointless and endless money-pit war in some Godforesaken hole half a world away.

    Honestly, staying does not make any sense. “Terrorists” can operate in any one of the “safe havens” offered by the existence of dozens of failed states throughout the world, and they can also operate from within Western Europe or the USA, and those latter “terrorists” are much more dangerous to us than some crumbum in the Sudan or Yemen.

    @1
    The sad truth about Afghanistan is that it’s become a pawn not just for our interests, but for the interests of our allies. Countries like India, Russia, and Pakistan all have their own reasons for wanting us to continue our occupation.

    Juan Cole framed this in a really important way in a recent column. With our increasing economic problems, and our allies’ ability to use leverage against us, our soldiers are no longer going to be serving our national interests, but will be contracted out to serve the interests of other nations that haven’t built the military might themselves, but have the money, resources, or other leverage to use ours.

    Kohl-Welles represents the 36th District, not the 43rd. Please fix.

    Ousting Emiel Kandi from the marijuana supply business is a great argument for State regulation.

    Senator Kohl-Welles is an asset to our State whose influence extends far beyond her District, where she was just reelected by an overwhelming margin.
