Watching the Republican debate I was struck by how all of them (except Paul) agreed with Bush on Iraq, didn’t care about torture and kept talking about the Islamofacist/ terrorist threat. Rudy and the others conflated all the Islamic people together (Klinghofer and Munich, for instance, were done by Palestinian SECULAR terrorists – but Rudy claimed it was part of islamic terrorism). Such incredible ignorance by people who want to be president – same as the idiots who didn’t understand the differnces between Sunnis and shias – or Arabs and Iranians (who are not Arab). Is Tim Eyman forcing a giant unfunded mandate on the cities in his latest money making (for him) initiative scheme? It’s one of those things that SOUNDS COOL! Lets tell those darn stupid cities to synchronize all their traffic lights! They obviously just haven’t thought of it, and it takes a mail order watch salesman to remind them to do this.
Except…well…this is EXTREMELY expensive. Does his initiative (I haven’t read it, maybe someone here has seen a draft) provide the millions to do this? It’s not just about walking from intersection to intersection and flipping some timing switch. A good percentage of intersections are controlled by ‘intelligent’ switches linked to sensors in the road that control the lights. Other intersections are old fashioned simple ‘timers’. To synchronize everything requires changing out hundreds of ‘old’ systems with new modern ones, adding more sensors, and linking them in a web so when one sensor driven intersection changes it’s lights based on it’s traffic sensor, it has to tell the next intersection that doesn’t have traffic sensors to change at a new (non-standard) time.
You get the idea. It’s more complicated than just ‘flipping’ a switch. The huge money involved is the reason cities don’t generally try to ‘sync’ every traffic light. You can do part of one or two problem streets, but unless the tax payers want to folk up ANOTHER $100 million, or take that $100 million out of pot hole and road repair, or road contruction…then I’m not sure what magic fund will pay for this new project. Especially since I’m sure he wants another tax cut at the same time.

There they picked Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), who has unabashedly advocated an earned path to citizenship for the undocumented.
On the Republican side, Romney, despite his overwhelming funding advantage, came up short. University of Iowa polls showed that 57 percent of Iowa voters favored earned citizenship for the undocumented and only 23 percent favored deportation.

Do you see the book as a mea culpa?
DF: No. Mea culpa is a kind of hand-wringing, breast-beating, woe-is-me attitude that I don’t share. What I am saying is that there is exhaustion, intellectual exhaustion on the part of Republicans and conservatives.
NYT: And that their long winning streak in Congress has ended?
DF: What I am terrified of is that the Republican Party is heading into a period of political defeat. We lost the election in 2006. I am terrified that we can lose the election in 2008. We can lose in 2012, and it will take us half a dozen years to do the rethinking we need to do.
Not only are you racist, but you’re a doofus when it comes to correctly identifying ethnicities.

You might want to take a ‘introduction to business’ course (especially being a Republican). Just because a patent exists doesn’t mean the city can ‘use it’. We have to buy the product, or license it from the owner of the patent…that’s WHY you patent a product. How much is this? How much would Seattle have to pay the patent holder to use their system? What’s the cost?
Plus, if you read it, it’s wouldn’t work anyway. This is a patent on the idea of producing an final alternating grid pattern of lights. Fine. But that doesn’t help what we (and 98% of cities) have in the ‘partially’ controller intersection where SOME lights aren’t simple timers that can then be sync’d using calculation of ‘estimated times’. We have many intersections controlled by sensor logic to gauge traffic flow. There’s nothing in that patent to help with that.
But it was good idea, keep looking! Maybe you’ll find the “free” no taxes needed solution to our roads that no one else has found in any city in the last 200 years. If you do, you’ll be a billionaire if you can market it!

Three separate police and security sources confirmed the death toll and said about 20 people were wounded. Baghdad security spokesman Brigadier-General Qassim Moussawi told Iraqiya state television six people were killed and 26 wounded. One of the bombers detonated an explosive vest, the other struck with a car bomb. Among the dead was Riyadh al-Sammarrai, head of neighborhood security volunteers in Adhamiya, a mainly Sunni Arab area in northeastern Baghdad.
The first blast was caused by a suicide bomber, who apparently targeted Riyadh al-Samarrai, the head of a local US-backed armed group set up to oppose al-Qa’ida in Iraq. Mr al-Sammarai, a former police colonel, was killed in the explosion.
#2: a bomb hidden in a market cart that killed four in the central Karrada district
In another incident, a bomb went off near the Technological University in central Baghdad, killing four and injuring 16, including students, the local news agency has also reported that
#3: The first bomb detonated near Baghdad University on the southeastern bank of the Tigris river, killing a passing driver and wounding his passenger.
#4: About three minutes later, the officer said, another bomb went off near a police patrol that had responded to the first bombing, injuring three policemen.
#5: two explosive charges detonated near Saint Maskinta church in the afternoon, destroying the external wall of the church and creating a wave of panic among children and nuns. Bishop Faraj Raho in Mosul told VOI that the ‘the two charges were planted in front of the bishopric adjacent to Saint Maskinta church.

Further, the original point stands. EVEN IF you wanted to implement this patented product (at whatever it’s cost for the patent)…you’d STILL have to tie together every traffic intersection’s control box. Again, this isn’t free. It’s very expensive to replace all these old “timer” control boxes and build the web connecting the entire city light control system. Once you can do THAT, actually sync’ing the lights is a relatively trivial task (and undergraduate computer science problem) That’s not the problem, it’s the upgrading and building an entire city ‘web’ of control systems that’s the expensive part.
It’s like saying there’s a patent for a super intelligent sewer system. Just use it and you fix your city sewer problems. Except…it’s not just using some patented product, you have to actually dig up and replace hundreds of miles of sewer line. That’s the part that makes it unlikely to happen. The city BARELY has the money to keep up and maintain it’s systems, much less replace huge chunks of them.

Light rail has been criticized as a clunky 19th-century technology that lacks flexibility and convenience in addition to being expensive, but it attracts some supporters who believe want to reduce car usage.
There’s no denying the negative impacts of cars, but I believe many (if not all) of these impacts could be overcome or at least significantly mitigated by improved automative technology. For example, I argued that computer-guided driverless cars could increase the capacity of existing freeways and roads while reducing congestion, travel times, and accidents.
Well, guess what I saw in this morning’s headlines?
“GM Sees Driverless Cars on Horizon
“By TOM KRISHER,AP
“DETROIT (Jan. 7) – Cars that drive themselves – even parking at their destination – could be ready for sale within a decade, General Motors Corp. executives say.
“GM, parts suppliers, university engineers and other automakers all are working on vehicles that could revolutionize short- and long-distance travel. …
“‘This is not science fiction,’ Larry Burns, GM’s vice president for research and development, said ….
“Much of the technology already exists for vehicles to take the wheel …. And automated vehicles could dramatically improve life on the road, reducing crashes and congestion. …
“The first use likely would be on highways; people would have the option to choose a driverless mode while they still would control the vehicle on local streets, Burns said … the company plans to test driverless car technology by 2015 and have cars on the road around 2018.”
Roger Rabbit Commentary: I continue to question the wisdom of investing tens of billions of dollars per city in an old, inferior transportation technology that could be (likely would be?) superseded by new developments even before it was built.
59
Roger Rabbitspews:
It is much, much, easier to risk gobs of money on what may turn out to be a white elephant when it’s not your own money, though. Unlike cars, highways, and ferries, most of the costs of light rail are not paid by the people who want it and would use it.

Wow! It’s free? Neat! I don’t know why we didn’t do that before then. Oh, because it’s not. Yes it would have been nice if we would have STARTED building this system years ago. We’d be pretty far along. If would have been nice if we also built light rail back in the 60’s when it would have been cheaper. But we didn’t.
Of course NY has used it. It’s MUCH MUCH MUCH denser than Seattle. They don’t have the theoretical option of building more roads, they have literally no choice. Plus NY has an entire subway (rail) system to take the majority of drivers off the street to BEGIN with. If you think this really “solves” any traffic flow, you haven’t tried to cross midtown at 7pm on a Friday in New York.

Hey Pooper,
You think I’m a bigot yet you are silent when Doughy Pantload Jonah Goldberg stops just a plausible-denial whisker short of predicting black people will riot if Obama doesn’t win the election.
I think it’s worth imagining a certain scenario. Imagine the Democrats do rally around Obama. Imagine the media invests as heavily in him as I think we all know they will if he’s the nominee — and then imagine he loses. I seriously think certain segments of American political life will become completely unhinged. I can imagine the fear of this social unraveling actually aiding Obama enormously in 2008….Obama has a rendezvous with destiny, or so we will be told. And if he’s denied it, teeth shall be gnashed, clothes rent and prices paid.
There is no Latino-hating wing of my party, but there is a minority patronizing wing of yours.
McCain’s immigration position was wrong, and the American people rejected it…my family notwithstanding.
Uncontrolled immigration is bad for the country, and we MUST get a handle on the borders first and formost. Arizona’s experiment with tough penalties on those who hire illegal workers looks to be a promising start. If those in the country illegally cannot find work, then perhaps they’ll return to where they can legally find work, albeit work not as lucrative. If they can’t find work in their home countries, then perhaps those countries will be motivated to do more to rectify the situation instead of just shipping their un and under-employed here.
And increasingly, police agencies across the country will inquire of a suspect’s immigration status to determine if the individual (1) has a criminal record or outstanding warrant, and (2) is in the country illegally, in which case ICE is called and the suspect then becomes subject to deportation.
That there also is a need to figure out a common-sense, humane, and just solution to the 12 or 13 million illegals we have now, but any form of Scot-free amnesty isn’t it. Penalties – severe ones – and full payment of back taxes (believe me, a lot of illegals don’t pay them because they use phony Social Security numbers or work under the table) along with an English-only and English as a national language emphasis must be part of it.
Speak what you wish at home, but in our common interaction, English is the language of America and the one by which we need to communicate so that we can all understand each other. Since the founding of the Republic, that’s exactly what immigrants from non-English speaking countries did, and it worked well for them.
And no more of that crap about returning the American Southwest to Mexico.

#58 – That’s not going to happen (anytime soon). The ‘driverless’ car, the flying car and the personal jet pack have been running jokes in Popular Science for going on 50 years. Every 5 years they claim it’s “almost here”
The Pentagon has spent hundreds of millions in their own “X Prize” race to get the private industry to build a ‘automatic’ drone car/truck/tank that can navigate by itself. They’re getting good at it, but it’s NO WHERE near ready to be put on a public road at 70 mph. The Pentagon version could navigate a road at slow speeds.
By the way, this would be nice little $30K addition to the cost of your car. Are you going to ‘mandate’ that every car that drives in Seattle buy this ‘driverless’ option? And there is the rub. It’s a system that only works if EVERYONE is using it. Ask them for a model of how much traffic improvement you get if 25% of the cars don’t use this and are manually driven. You still get the vast majority of the same backup/errors.
But even if in 20 years we build the road infrastructure (road edge sensors and such) which of course aren’t free, the point is will people use it? It may or may not ever be implemented depending on if people ‘trust’ their car to drive itself at 70 mph 2 feet from the car in front of themselves.
I’m a computer science geek, and I “might” after a lot of testing and a few years of production results. But I’m thinking the average person wouldn’t be comfortable with this.
Here’s something Jonah Goldberg also said in the same piece:
“…the more reasonable but nonetheless hopeful, proud, idealistic and sincere sentiments of pride and well-wishing for Obama as the first serious mainstream black contender for the White House (some, but by no means all, of these sentiments shared by yours truly)…”
The purpose of what he wrote was to criticize the excessivue euphoria of another writer who as much as compared Barack Obama to the Second Coming. In that sense, then the “certain segments” to whom he refers who will gnash their teeth and rend their garments are, in fact, represented here by the…HA Happy Hooligans.
That’s right, it will be the severely disappointed hard-lefties among you who will have their hearts broken by a President Obama who will make deals with Republicans, kill terrorists, not nationalize GM, and support health care proposals insufficiently socialistic and Marxian for your tastes.

One has to wonder if but what you had additional sides out of your mouth if, would we have heard additional theories?”
Yet…if you go back and examine my most recent posts about Barack Obama – here and elsewhere – you’ll find me commending him, his campaign, and the essential tone of his message, which contrasts sharply from both HRC and John Edwards. Still, the higher you put yourself up, the longer the fall to the floor, and that’s exactly what he risks.
If Barack Obama doesn’t fulfill people’s expections, which are getting built up pretty high, then their level of disappointment morphing into bitter resentment might get pretty fierce.
And the longer you stay stuck in the fantasy of stolen elections, the longer you’ll stay stuck in the past. Isn’t it curious that not one serious Demo Prexy candidate has uttered boo about that? Like, they don’t believe it themselves?

Here’s some more wisdom from Raymond about your corrupt, ugly, RACIST party!
But he can’t help following the campaign and takes mental notes on the dirty tricks that he’s seen so far. “The most blatant dirty trick is when Republicans go on to TV to talk about ‘Barack Hussein Obama.'” Raymond was struck by the calls to the pastors in Iowa that threatened them with IRS subpoenas. “That’s some rough stuff.”
Raymond is also following New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly Ayotte’s investigation of the anti-Mormon calls that targeted Mitt Romney and his faith in November. Avotte described the role of two firms in the ploy: Western Wats, of Orem, Utah, which made the calls, and Moore-Information Inc., of Portland, Ore., which hired Western Wats.
“That was not nickel-and-dime stuff,” says Raymond, explaining that the cost of such an operation narrows the field of suspects. “It couldn’t have come from Huckabee, McCain or Thompson — they don’t have enough money to pay for that kind of operation.”

How do you explain white Iowa voters overwhelmingly supporting Obama?
The same way the voters want bush impeached and the dixiecrat politicians won’t do anything. The voters appear to be clueless about what the elected officials are doing.
It appears even you know that many of the basic principles of the dixiecrat party is racist. So tell us, why can’t a black man that has paid into social security his whole life (that has a life expectancy of less than the age of receiving ss benefits) pass that $$ onto his children to buy their first house or grandchildren for college. Why do you believe that black people shouldn’t be allowed to help their children/grandchildren. One party wants black people to have that opportunity, the other party doesn’t. Take a guess which party doesn’t want them to.
As Jay Leno said the other night, in Iowa, Barack Obama got 70% of the young vote and 100% of the black vote, a guy named Larry.
In addition, commentator after commentator – even conservative commentators like Star Parker – are all lauding Obama’s victory as evidence that American politics has transcended racial obstacles.

I guess he listened to Randi “Four Gun Shots” Rhodes on Scare America!
correctnotright spews:
Gee Puddy – It is difficult to talk to someone who THINKS he knows so much – but is so often wrong.
No wonder you like bush.
Interesting that you like Obama , though….never would have thought it.
Puddybud spews:
Neverrightstillincorrect: Exactly right on him working on this task force Neverrightstillincorrect!
You postulated above “Reichert was INCOMPETENT as a sheriff”. Thems your words. I just provided clear evidence your argument was a worthless canard.
So when the FBI has people on the 10 Most Wanted List for 20 years and they finally catch them, they are incompetent too? You have some really entertaining views here. I am sure the great people in the FBI would like to interview you too.
Puddybud spews:
Neverrightstillincorrect: You said many weeks ago “You can cite your few scientists who argue otherwise – but they are a small minority and are not respected because they haven’t published anything worthwhile to disprove the consensus on global warming.”. Now the NY Times is questioning it and you still are slinging the shitty water on that one.
You said “Reichert was INCOMPETENT as a sheriff”. He was Sheriff only for four years and they caught Ridgway. You choose to pick and choose your facts to keep your argument alive.
You are a close minded individual. Keep up the good work!
YLB spews:
69 – Ah yes the plausible deniability. Ezra Klein was talking about Obama’s speaking gifts. Obama is a formidable politician. He does inspire people.
You’re making shit up of course about the people here. Your ugly party is capable of stealing this election. We expect you will try and that you may succeed.
Sure we’ll be mad but it’s practically inevitable your party will fall for at least a generation if it continues doing what it’s doing.
I dare you guys to steal this next election. Another Republican won’t be elected in my grandkid’s memory.
Puddybud spews:
Neverrightstillincorrect: Obama is a black man who is clean and articulate.
Damn – Senator Joe Biden beat me to it! It was a priceless moment for a democrap to make an “entertaining” comment. But wait… where was the moral outrage?
Senator Joe Biden and Indian-Americans and 7-11s: “I mean, you cannot enter a 7-11 or a Dunkin Donuts unless you have an Indian Accent”. But wait… where was the moral outrage?
I wonder if the hair plugs affected his mind? Need I say more?
Piper Scott spews:
@77…YLB…
Off your meds? It’s one thing to be inconsistent from time to time, per Emerson, but to be diametrically opposed all in the same post?
Which is it? This:
“Your ugly party is capable of stealing this election. We expect you will try and that you may succeed.”
Or this:
“I dare you guys to steal this next election. Another Republican won’t be elected in my grandkid’s memory?”
Talk about your urban legend!
The Piper
YLB spews:
I say you and your ilk are racists 24/7. Now with Obama picking up steam, you are very cryptic in your comments.
You say nothing about Ronnie Raygun starting his prez campaign in Mississippi talking about state’s rights. You say nothing about Nixon’s Southern Strategy and Ken Mehlman apologizing in public for it. You say nothing about racists running to your party and staying there. You say nothing about Republicans electing David Duke to office.
You and I have discussed Obama before. I have supported him strongly but didn’t like his DLC leanings and was skeptical about his organization. He has not been scrutinized as much as Hillary and Edwards and therefore he is highly vulnerable to “swift-boating” by YOUR UGLY PARTY.
The more I have learned about Obama the more I like him. He’s a talented legislator and organizer with incredible speaking gifts. His record proves that he can get things done even with REPUBLICAN help which is a frickin’ miracle.
If Obama is the nominee I WILL SUPPORT HIM.

How much longer until the racist websites start linking to horsesass.org? You dixiecrats can change your name but you can’t change your core beliefs.
Puddybud spews:
Clueless Gooberfool@80: I will say nothing to you on this until you first answer my question I posed from the other thread or the one I placed here @post71.
Until you decide to debate: TALK TO THE HAND
YLB spews:
If Barack Obama doesn’t fulfill people’s expections, which are getting built up pretty high, then their level of disappointment morphing into bitter resentment might get pretty fierce.
No it’s discussed quite a bit in lefty circles that just about any Dem president will short change the progressive agenda.
It’s what politicians do. I’m sure there’s more than a few disappointments in Reagan, and the two Bushes from their supporters.
This is a marathon, not a sprint.
YLB spews:
81 – You mean you’re too PC to talk about racism in the Republican Party Marv?
Marvin Stamn spews:
#49 correctnotright says:

Puddybud spews:
Clueless Gooberfool:
I stand by my comment about you: “I say you and your ilk are racists 24/7. Now with Obama picking up steam, you are very cryptic in your comments.”
This epiphany you just had regarding Obama means you are giving up on Mr Hairspray Two Americas?
correctnotright spews:
Puddy: You are right – I should have said Reichert was incompetent even BEFORE he was sheriff – now can we agree!
and by the way – I like Obama because of his ideas – not his skin color. skin color doesn’t mean a thing to me – but I know that it does for a lot of people.
Oh – and on global warming – the scientific concensus didn’t change overnight because the NY times published something.
the NY times publishes Bill Kristol – but that doesn’t make him right or anything other than a republican talking points shill either.
Rujax! spews:
Fuck!
All THREE of them are in here now…

Clueless Gooberfool@83 shitted in his little toilet: “No it’s discussed quite a bit in lefty circles that just about any Dem president will short change the progressive agenda.”
When I posted Clinton did that same thing from 1996-2000 you wrote:
“Right wing bullshit. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz.”
You can’t seem to keep your story straight anymore!
Puddybud spews:
So now Neverrightstillincorrect, you are saying Reichert’s boss, appointed incumbent sheriff James Montgomery, who oversaw all KCSD operations was incompetent?
Man your story keeps changing…
Puddybud spews:
Dull Knife sighting at post #88.

Of course there are racists in both parties. Except it’s the dixiecrat party that is against school vouchers, forcing poor blacks to stay in failing schools. It’s the dixiecrat party that supports the black genocide known as abortion. (blacks abort babies at over twice their population %) It’s the dixiecrat party that refuses to let a black man that paid into social security his whole life pass that on to his children/grandchildren.
Want to try and explain how the basic tenets of the dixiecrat party isn’t racist?
Puddybud spews:
Clueless Gooberfool: You through up so much shit you hope some sticks.
Answer my question in post #82.
Or as a suggested when I placed the mensnewsdaily post you are not a man! A man tackles issues head on.
You run, deflect, and obfuscate when the going gets tough. I bet you must be a real piece of work to manage.
Why are you blogging at work Clueless Gooberfool?
YLB spews:
you are giving up on Mr Hairspray Two Americas?
No, I prefer EDWARDS because I believe he will fight the greedheads like he has all his life. At the end of the day, the greedheads are what’s wrong with this country – way, way more than the theocrats most of whom are greedheads anyway.
Obama will probably let us down on that.
YLB spews:
95 – So much bullshit there it’s not worth commenting.
How do you explain white Iowa voters overwhelmingly supporting Obama?
How do you explain lily white Granite Staters about to do the same?

Piper Scott spews:
@98…YLB…
Because there are no black Iowa voters?
As Jay Leno said the other night, in Iowa, Barack Obama got 70% of the young vote and 100% of the black vote, a guy named Larry.
In addition, commentator after commentator – even conservative commentators like Star Parker – are all lauding Obama’s victory as evidence that American politics has transcended racial obstacles.
http://www.townhall.com/column....._contrasts
BTW…Star Parker is a woman of color and a former welfare queen who bootstrapped herself off welfare, out of the ghetto, and into public prominence all without a government program.
It can be done!
The Piper
YLB spews:
101 – I don’t have time to chase more of your bullshit. I tried that with Mattel and all I got was name-calling from you.

Piper Scott spews:

“No it’s discussed quite a bit in lefty circles that just about any Dem president will short change the progressive agenda.
It’s what politicians do.”
So…let me get this straight…you continue to support candidates you know who will pull the rug out from under you, and you do so gleefully?
Wow! Classic definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over all the while hoping for a different result.
BTW…Ronaldus Magnus Reaganus never disappointed us. He inspired, encouraged, ennobled, and motivated us because he believed in us.
And GWB, as a war time leader, reminds me a lot of Lincoln.
And so it goes…

You are a blessing to your party.
YLB spews:

I didn’t say that. I said short change.
As long as greedheads call the shots in this country, Progressive’s focus should be on building their coalition and electing champions to local offices and the Congress.
That’s how the right wing took charge.
Puddybud spews:
Clueless Gooberfool@101:
Ahhhhh yes.. revisionist history on Mattel. That thread ended at post 148 when Goldy moved it off the page. What did it show?

2) 10 times more democrap soft money contributions
3) Clueless Gooberfool has issues with spreadsheets
4) Richard Pope’s values corroborated my values
5) Clueless Gooberfool is an idiot!
I understand why post #101 scares an empty suit like you. It will demonstrate the neon signs flashing in your eyes “Space Available Here” and the vacuousness of your inane and stupid arguments.

You are a target rich environment!
“As long as greedheads call the shots in this country, Progressive’s focus should be on building their coalition and electing champions to local offices and the Congress.
That’s how the right wing took charge.”
So…the “right wing took charge” when “Progressive’s focus(ed)…on building their coalition and electing champions to local offices and the Congress?”
Essentially, then, the more “progressives” that get elected, the more the “right wing” will be in charge?
Who knew???
Aside from places that always seem to elect so-called “progressives,” can you tell me where in American this landslide of leftism lives? No fair citing Madison, WI which hasn’t voted American since the second Roosevelt administration.
Do they put something in the water where you live that makes you think this way?

The right wing took charge exactly by organizing at the grass roots and building from there.
Following the prez racehorse is fun but at the end of the day it won’t serve the progressive agenda all that well.
And ever hear of the 50 states strategy? It worked well for the progressive agenda in 2006 and it will continue to work well as long as we don’t lose our focus.
Your crowd started its marathon with the championing of Barry Goldwater and where is it today?: corrupt, bankrupt and quoting David Frum, “intellectually exhausted”.

Me? Give me paper ballots in a voting booth every time. Eliminate the absentee ballot save for those who will legitmately be absent. Require photo ID at the polling place, and mandatory re-registration every five years or so.
Bottom line…counts should be accurate no matter who wins, and only legit registered voters should be allowed to vote.

What did Reichert do wrong in the GR Killer case? For starters the pimp for the 10th or 11th victim gave a description and partial plate for Ridgeway’s pickup. Reichert deep-sixed the tip because “pimps always lie”. He later denied saying that and denied deep-sixing the tip, of course.
