No, this is more like Senator McCain trying to make a joke and sounding like a sarcastic smartass.
This campaign has REALLY done a number on his charm. He tries to be Reagan, his hero, but this whole fall is full of FAIL- he’s snippy, he’s lost his “base” in the press, he resents sharing the stage with Senator Obama. It’s really awful. I think John Weaver (his ex-aide) is right- they should have let McCain be McCain on the campaign trail. It might not have worked, but he’s lost a lot of middle America that was inclined to positively view him before the Bushies decided to have him be Bush 2.0- rigidly on message and so on.
Instead, they have the worst of both worlds: you get the randomness of the Palin pick and parachuting into DC for the bailout negotiations, and a campaign full of spin, juvenile talking points and flip-flops based on the news cycle that’s completely undermined his image. The sad part is Hillary’s campaign was pretty undisciplined and clueless at times… and they probably did a better job against Obama than McCain’s campaign is doing (granted, the overall gestalt favors a Democrat, but some of the things the McCain campaign’s done have just been terrible, optically and substantively).
Samples:
5. McCain has repeatedly accused Obama of supporting higher taxes on people making as little as $42,000 a year. “Two times, on March 14, 2008 and June 4, 2008, in the Democratic budget resolution, he voted to raise taxes on people making just $42,000 per year,” McCain said this week. But this is a misleading claim: Obama’s votes were for nonbinding resolutions, which supported allowing certain Bush administration tax cuts to expire but didn’t actually have the effect of raising taxes.
6. In a July visit to Colorado, McCain told voters: “I want to look you in the eye: I will not raise your taxes nor support a tax increase. I will not do it.” Last Sunday, however, McCain acknowledged to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that his health care plan could lead to some people paying taxes on employer-provided health insurance.
7. McCain’s campaign claimed adviser Rick Davis had taken a leave of absence from his firm, Davis Manafort, and vigorously attacked a New York Times story suggesting that Davis had profited from Davis Manafort’s relationship with mortgage lender Freddie Mac. “Mr. Davis has seen no income from Davis Manafort since 2006,” wrote McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb, who called the Times story “demonstrably false.”
“Mr. Davis has never — never — been a lobbyist for either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac.”
But Davis Manafort was receiving $15,000 monthly payments from Freddie Mac as recently as August, and while the payments didn’t go to Davis personally he still stands to gain from the success of his firm.
A pretty amazing speech by the AFL-CIO’s Richard Trumka. To see a white union man take on racism this way is very moving. Something truly profound could happen in this election, if we want it to:

Hey wingers, where’s todays Rasmussen poll? Hmm. I haven’t see it–wonder why?
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows Barack Obama attracting 51% of the vote while John McCain earns 44%. This seven-point advantage is the largest yet enjoyed by Obama during Election 2008 and is consistent with the stable lead he has enjoyed over the past week. For each of the past seven days, Obama has been at 50% or 51% and McCain has been at 44% or 45%.
Notice Cynical avoids the subject of the post, because he really sees nothing wrong with having a dictator, as long as it is his dictator.

@15: Mark is so stupid he doesn’t even know that Obama will lower taxes more than McCain. He is typical of the right wingers who are so brainwashed they don’t even know a lie by McCain when they hear it.
In addition, I have calculated that Obama will sabve me over 1,000 in taxes plus at least another 2-3K for health care (McCain’s plan will cost way more) and not counting the college tuition benefit. I can’t afford McCain.
I do notice McCain just voted for the pork laden bill that was passed in the senate to entice the House republicans (the one’s Mccain could NOT deliver originally) to vote for it – I spell it HYPOCRITE.
