What a remarkable story about what happens when there is no social compact, and the drive for wealth consumes all other values. Fortunately, in our own nation, Reaganism has finally been suffocated.

Hmmm…sounds like yet another reason to only deal with Islamic countries at arm’s length. Islam is too intent on living in the Middle Ages. We aren’t going to change that and should just accept it that Islamic countries are just too crazy to deal with.

PI, the problem in Dubai isn’t Islamist fundamentalism – at least not yet. It’s the obsessive/compulsive megalomania of the Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum, Dubai’s absolute ruler. Islamic fundamentalism could, and likely will flourish there, should the economy get much worse. But as long as al-Maktoum maintains power, the radicals are kept in check.
Even though native Emiratis make up only 5% of the population, Dubai suddenly seems like a pint-sized version of Iran circa 1978 to me all of a sudden. And al-Maktoum’s madness may consume the entire UAE with it as well as Dubai.

Dubai sounds like my kind of place! Dubai is more better then the USA! A conservative wet dream…

And you would be the expert on wet dreams, Junior Troll Crusader. Still think you can actually bring something to the table? Maybe you should go Galt and move to Dubai. Love to see how you’d react once you got in trouble and they took away your passport…..
You clearly didn’t read that article very well.
Once again, EPIC FAIL!

This is such a disaster in the making.
They get the drinking water from desalination of the sea water, why are they allowing sewage to be dumped into it?

There’s another dark side to a place like Dubai–it serves as an “open-port” haven for the transfer of money, things and people to where they aren’t supposed to go. I knew of one front company that was set up in Dubai in the 90’s to purchase computers of the sort used to design submarine propellers and reactor plumbing and smuggle them to Tehran.
