I know Dave Reichert and his buddies at the Seattle Times would like to present him as a “conscience driven independent,” but exactly how independent he is can be measured by the degree to which the Bush White House has prioritized his reelection. When President Bush made his first fundraising visit of the cycle on behalf of a Republican incumbent, he flew cross-country to raise money for his friend and ally, Dave Reichert. And now that First Lady Laura Bush is making her first appearance on behalf of an incumbent, she too has followed her husband’s path.
That’s Dave Reichert — the Bush’s favorite congressman — and while you can’t blame him for happily sitting down to a $500 per person lunch with the First Lady at an exclusive Medina residence, he can’t blame us for doing our best to make him choke on it. And the best way to make him and his campaign gag on yet another White House funder, is to match this event donor for donor.
That’s why we’ve set a target of 250 new donors to Darcy Burner in response to today’s event, and the good news is that we’re already halfway there. The bad news is, we’re only halfway there. So we need your help. I just donated yet again to Darcy’s campaign and I’m asking you to do the same. Anything you give will be appreciated; even a few bucks can make a difference.
They have bigger checkbooks, but there’s more than us than there are them. Help prove it by giving today.

I am a young voter and just dipping into politics and the one and only thing I get, especially out of this blog, is such extreme hatred, anger, hostility, impatience, name calling, lack of compassion, disrespect…oh my the list goes on.
BUT one thing I am learning is…no wonder our country is sooooo screwed up. So much anger and hatred, no one is willing to work together, or debate without slandering. People on these blogs seem to ridicule and slander anyone and everyone with a different opinion. Isn’t that what America is all about? All of us being “individuals”? If only American citizens could get along and stop this hatred, anger, slandering name calling, maybe our elected officials could learn from the people.
Sorry, just had to rant! But thanks for the last month or so of reading your blog and giving me examples of why our country is so weak right now. I am definately staying away from politics, I will just stick to studying them. I pray Obama can truly change Americans way of thinking….teach less hatred and anger, teach UNITY and working together.

Rich people in Washington tend to be fairly evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, probably even a (more than) slight edge to Democrats. There is no question that Darcy Burner has plenty of wealthy local donors, while Dave Reichert has to scrounge for funds from all over the country.
But if you get to other areas of the country — like Texas, Florida, or Alabama — and folks in the upper 10% of income tend to favor the Republicans by at least 80% to 20%. And Republicans also tend to be about 95% White, even though the general population is only about 70% White.
YellowPup spews:
Take that, Reichert. For all that you do to us.
PuddyPrick, The Fact Finding Prognosticator... spews:
Slight edge to donkey in WA Richard? You are being too conservative. This state has many rich donkey. Just think of that late MS guy who left all that money to lefty causes?
ArtFart spews:
Hannah….good on ya for expressing that. Unfortunately, it seems that this blog only represents the level to which politics in this country have sunk, albeit the language here tends to be more raw than it might be in other venues. Elsewhere, you’ll find all sorts of clever euphemisms in use by people to tell each other that they, their ideas, their ancestors and offspring collectively suck.
Although we seem to wallow in all this, I think most of us in our hearts of hearts are pretty sad it’s all come to this. I’m with you in hoping Obama…or somebody can pull America out of its collective moral and ideological death spiral.

I’m sorry you feel that way. This blog comment board and many others like it are rough neighborhoods. It’s truly adults only kind of territory and I mean that respectfully. You have to have an elephant’s hide to hang out here because the right wing brings nothing but fear, lies and hatred to the table.
There are some exceptions to that rule but very few.
The theme of this blog and its comments board is simple: REPUBLICANS SUCK. Since the rise of Reagan, Republicans have tried to dismantle the modest social advances made since the New Deal – things that are taken for granted in other countries.
The last 7 years under Bush and the Republicans have been nightmarish – this country’s debt has almost doubled, more and more jobs have left for good and we’re teetering into recession. The carnage of Iraq is going to have consequences that will be suffered for generations. It’s not a pretty picture.
Mark my words: you as a younger person will have to live with and find a way to deal with this ugly legacy. You can’t escape this even if you migrate to another country. No one lives in a vacuum. Even the right wing wealthy in their gated communities have to come outside once in a while to turn their noses up in indifference.
All I can encourage you to do is to strive to see the big picture. Easier said than done. Keep studying history, economics and contemporary public affairs from many varied viewpoints. It’s much better than following reality tv shows. Over time you’ll develop a framework of understanding current events that’s YOUR OWN, Most importantly – test your views against the perspectives of other folks in serious debate. It won’t be easy but out of the back and forth you’ll figure out what you truly believe in and what you want to stand for.
On this comment board we battle the ideology of degenerate knee-jerk right wingers. The right wing is failing and is undergoing its death throes. It’s not a good time for them. The bell was starting to toll for them almost right after Bush won re-election. That in part is why it’s ugly here.
But come November, there will be a nice payoff indeed for those of us who’ll stick it out.

Then the NEW Progressives Donkeys starting calling us fascists. You know the Mussolini type. Another misnomer but what the hey, you gots to know your political enemy.
Then one day low and behold we became Nazis. But Nazis are socialists, one of the identifying schemas of the NEW Progressives Donkeys (democrats). In fact Pelletizer (Roger Rabbit – get it?) calls KLake (30 year military hero) a Nazi all the time. Then the most vile NEW Progressive, Seattle School Teacher Arizona Educated Headless Lucy (Little Lor Fauntleroy, Blatantly Obvious, Irv Kupicet, Piper hates the troop, Piper Supprots Torture, etc. etc. etc.) first used jackbooted goosestepping nazis. When we use the same terms to describe the most virulent lefties here poor SeattleJew popped his carotid artery.
Then there are the morons – they parrot the Daily Kos, Media Matters, CAR line (George Soros funded, Hillary (Heilary) Clinton supported) 527 sites. In fact some drink their warm kool-aid every morning before their first cup of java.
There is much more you can learn from this site on your own. Remember these NEW Progressives emulate the Heilary Clinton I pattern myself after the Early 1900 Progressives.
Well Hannah do a Google search on that time and you’ll see Margaret Sanger was for eugenics of black people cuz we’s having too many babies. Or Oliver Wendell Holmes for Eugenics cuz he felt three generations of stupid people needed to be sterilized or something worse. These Progressives supported Hitler in the beginning, Mussolini, Stalin etc. It’s all there.
They try to run from their history. We remind them of it.

Reading both dem and rep blogs shows the imaturity of the 12 year olds name calling. All that name calling and disrespect creates is distance between people. And THAT there is what has caused this country to go to hell in a hand basket. Everyone needs to learn to be grown adults and work together to accomplish a great Government. People working against people, (poor vs rich, black vs white, man vs woman, dems vs reps etc) accomplishes nothing but animosity and anger and hatred. If this blog is to spout your opinions in hopes of gaining newbie voters, the animosity and hatred has turned so many away. (note: I am voting for Obama in hopes he can bring some unity)
Look at Hollywood, alot of democrats. Look at King County full of wealthy (the worlds richest man) mostly democratic…so once again there is the rich vs the poor. I see so much of our country split and full of anger over politics. We all have different opinions and ideas, that’s what makes us individuals and part of what makes our country so great. But when people slander others for using their brains and voicing their ideas and opinions, that there is 12 year old childish behavior.

PuddyPrick and Zip told a lot of lies in their messages. Mostly about what people here believe. All lies.
Just read their messages and realize that ugly mentality is what we’re fighting against.
The Democratic resurgence in November will be the start of a long process to clean up the disastrous mess Republicans have made.
You say you support Obama. Excellent. He’ll make a good President. But again, it’s just a start. There’s a lot to do. And Obama will make mistakes. No one is perfect.
You’ll also be surprised to know that PuddyPrick is African American and supports Obama as well. He loathes Hillary Clinton with a passion that is pychopathic in intensity and this hatred extends to Democrats in general.
According to the National Journal Barack Obama was the most liberal Senator of 2007 exceeding both Hillary and Ted Kennedy in his liberal voting.
http://nj.nationaljournal.com/voteratings/
It’s a total mystery why a lying, knee-jerk right winger like PuddyPrick would support someone like Obama for President.

I will conclude, based on the irrelevance of your question, that you are simply unable to provide an intelligent comparison between Reichert’s most significant accomplishment (according to Reichert) and one of Burner’s most significant accomplishments (according to Burner).
Since you’ve ducked the “compare and contrast” question, perhaps something a little simpler will be more to your speed. Please explain how Reichert is capable of adequately representing the interests of his district when Reichert, himself, has said that he basically just votes the way the party officials tell him to vote.

Zip, you’re a little out of step with your fellow yellow-striped weasel bretheren here. If all these Democrats are wealthy, and many of them got their wealth through high tech (and not, say, owning used car lots), then how can they really be anti free enterprise?
Or are you now going back to claiming that Dems are actually poor and envious?
And I think you need to denounce, renounce, and disavow the scum @ 55. Mr. Race War ought to check himself. Haldol and Thorazine would be the least of his problems.

First it’s encouraging to see you use the phrase “cogent argument”. While I’m pleased to see a modest result, you could, at the very least, you can give some of us lefty’s credit for having expanded your vocabulary.
Secondly, your statement is more than mildly amusing coming from someone who, more often than not, chooses to accept an argument based on who is making the argument and not on the internal coherence and merits of the argument itself. For clarification, I point interested readers to the discussion about Zell and Roudini in the previous comment thread (one that can be easily located by googling “Roudini site:horsesass.org”).

YLB spews:
Hannah: See what an ugly bastard Puddyprick can be? For months he’s been trying to pin Eugenics, a discredited psuedo-science ,on today’s progressive minded people.
Progressives are just people who believe in muscular government action to address society’s problems. What are those problems: national security, fair trade, crumbling infrastructure, environmental problems like pollution and climate change, education, healthcare and equality of opportunity. These are problems that liberals and modern progressives have been trying to get solutions for since at least the end of WWII. We’re not all that different from Teddy Roosevelt, Harry Truman or Dwight Eisenhower.
You see Eugenics on that list or problems? Nope. But that doesn’t stop an insane fool like PuddyPrick from spewing his despicable lies.
Right wingers stand on degenerate “principles”. A right wing governor will not raise taxes to fix crumbling infrastructure. No way no how. He or she will just band aid over big problems. The right wing will then let a Dem fix the problem and if that involves a tax increase – watch out. They’ll scream their heads off with a lot of “told you so”.
Example: look how they treated Mike Huckabee when he raised taxes modestly to balance the budget in Arkansas. A Republican is not supposed to do that. They punished him for that through propaganda and hate talk radio like Rush Limbaugh’s show.
See how that bridge collapsed in Minneapolis? That happened on a Republican governor’s watch. That’s not supposed to happen. Republicans time their neglect so that disasters happen on a Dem’s watch. The Dem is supposed to clean up the mess and raise the funds to do it so a Republican can then run on lowering the taxes raised to clean up Republican neglect.
This kind of corruption and dishonesty is why Republicans and their lackeys like zip and PuddyPrick have to be put out of business for at least a generation.

“See how that bridge collapsed in Minneapolis?”
Yes, the design error was made when the bridge was originally constructed and could not have been discovered by regular bridge inspections (which were done to standards by the way). You must be ignorant or a liar to try to make a Dem vs Repub issue out of it.
“The problem was hidden in a series of steel “gusset” plates that can be riveted or bolted to the beams and members of a bridge to hold them together to form a larger part called a truss. The failure at the I-35W bridge came in part because decades ago a consultant designed some of its plates to be only a half-inch thick when they should been a full inch thick, said Cannestra and Finn Hubbard, a Wisconsin state bridge engineer.”

For people, like you and me, who’ve been posting comments here concurrently with headless lucy, our continued posting here doesn’t disturb this world view.
However, when new people arrive, this disturbs his world view. His response to the resulting cognitive dissonance is to imagine that all these new people are really just headless lucy with a changed screen name.
It’s worth noting how this also parallels his “who” vs “what” preference for accepting and/or rejecting any given argument. Remember back when Bush and Kennedy were in favor of the same immigration reform bill? Of all the things that George W Bush has done to this country, the one thing that actually incurred the wrath of his Republican base is to have been in favor of a bill that Ted Kennedy would vote for. This had nothing to do with the bill itself, and everything to do with Ted Kennedy.

The difference between those who think and those who don’t can be summed up in the foregoing quote. Puddy, he asserts, is acquainted with “historical facts” over a 90-year period. I wish I had such confidence about “facts.” History, that which we look back upon, is always getting rewritten–even inconsequential history, like personal or family history. Have you ever found out, long afterward, something about an uncle, or grandparent, or even sibling, that might have changed the way you viewed most everything as a child? History, like memory, is fluid. Is there some sort of Platonic, fixed, history? Of course, but none of us are keen to it. Puddy would be wise if he were to keep his mind a bit more open.

Ah, it’s Zip Einstein, Natural at Law. By confusing ‘reality with sarcasm’ do you mean that I’ve correctly identified you as a Natural Law Party assclown troll? I ask because I wasn’t being in the least sarcastic.
Or are you claiming (in typical rightwing attempts to wiggle and dodge) that YOU were indulging in some sort of sarcasm? If so, what sort? Sarcastically pretending to be a racist? Sarcastically pretending that all Democrats with money are corrupt public workers?
I am at a loss. I must be out of good drugs. Perhaps I need more to ease the pain of the muscles in my abdomen. They hurt from laughing at your risible world view.

169 – Hannah, we have a very broken tax system in this state. We can never raise the kind money needed to maintain the infrastructure that is so badly needed to sustain economic growth. Blame can be laid at the feet of both parties and special interests like the Boeing Company.
However…
Take the car tabs tax. Yes it was a bad tax and hated but how else do you pay for infrastructure if you don’t raise funds for it? We don’t have an income tax in this state like other states. Other states treat their gas tax differently and are able to raise more funds for transportation projects.
A lot of people don’t remember Referendum 49 which was a Republican plan to shift one half of the old car tab revenues to road building. The Republicans complained that too much money was going to things like buses and ferries.
So what happened? Bomb thrower Tim Eyman came up with his $30 tabs. Nice way to kill the hated car tab tax but it ended up costing 7 percent of the State budget. And it killed the REPUBLICAN R-49 plan!
And there went any hopes of building and maintaining transportations structures in this State.
It’s going to take a lot of political courage to fix the tax system in this state. We should be able to do it. This state has grown quite a bit in population. If the politicians don’t grow up, the people will have to replace them. We’re already seeing this in the suburbs and as a result the Dems now have a strong majority in the legislature.
If Christine Gregoire is re-elected and the legislature has a super-majority of Democrats and they STILL don’t reform the tax system – then there’s no hope for progress in this state. This state will be a backwater and people will leave. Some (mostly Republicans) will be happy with that.

In the opposite corner we have Abe Lincoln in black face.
And you think TBG is the nut? ALL OVER THE WORLD, capitalism is triumphant and we are heading backwards to marxism??? does this make sense?
The one hope we have, like happened in Pakistan, is the good old military! Bush IS the CIC. I hope he declares martial law and postpones this phony election until the parties can nominate real candidates and .. that will give us the time to win in Iraq too!
Same thing here in WAstate, except the shoe is on the other foot. Our guv will nbever call out the Naitnal Guard BUT when the public learns that Dino Rossi is a Tlingit chief and the Muscleshoots come in behind him .. you watch out!

One thing Clueless Idiot@198 forgets to tell you are real facts. He forgets to tell you Governor Locke was given the opportunity to fix the car tab issue before I-695 and he decided not to. Locke didn’t move until over 500,000 signatures were turned in on the initiative. When I moved here I had to cough up $1100 for my vehicles because of that tax. All of a sudden Locke publicly admits the tax rate – 2.2 percent of a vehicle’s estimated value is too high. Well he was asked that in the mid 90s and said nothing. Then the Donkey Legislature wanted to give a $30 rebate.
So Locke says he’ll call a special session. Well the donkey (AKA democrat party) led senate said this is a surprise, he never told us.
What Clueless Idiot also conveniently forgets to tell you is some of the I-695 money went to wetlands. Environmental Affairs Office had a program Advance Environmental Mitigation Revolving Account. It was part of the MVET. Why?
Ask Clueless Idiot to give us his “impartial” take on our near highest state gas tax.

This is why we don’t take people at their word when it comes to Economic analysis.
You see, people who’ve made billions of dollars also stand to lose billions of dollars if the rest of us get an accurate picture of the train wreck that’s headed our way. Academics don’t have a financial stake that can be affected by their prognosis.
There’s an old joke about Economists. An Economist goes into her boss’ office, and says, “I think there’s a recession coming.” Her boss thinks for a second or two, then says, “OK. I’m laying you off.”
Always look at the analysis. And, if someone gives you a prognosis without a solid discussion of the underlying reasoning, the best thing to do is smile, nod and go looking for someone else’s analysis.

the party of high morals is inundated with a recorsd setting number of ethicalal, sexual and crorruption cases – with DeLAy, Renzi, Craig, Safavian, Gonzalez and the actions of the FEMA,FEC, FCC, EPA Interior just a few major examples.
the party of less government has been shown to be incompetent at actually running the government – even to the point of basic services such as FEMA or protecting us from bad drugs or shoddy poisonous imports.
the party of individual rights has no problem with illegal torture and illegal wiretapping.
the party of a free, strong america trembles at the word terrorist.

$30 tabs? I know the voters approved this by a landslide, but I understand it still really hasn’t taken full effect (ex: my car tabs were 185 last year, on a 2005 vehicle) To me it seems they created the RTA tax to replace the tax lowered by Eyman?
I guess I am soooo confused as to blaming the dems or the reps depending on where money seems to be wasted and I look at our Washington State government and the huge mess with the monorail, billions wasted even after several no votes. I was under the understanding when I voted to approve Gregoire’s last gas tax hike, that that money would be to pay for the Alaskan Way viaduct and 520 floating bridge. Now they are talking tolls, and very expensive tolls. The new Narrows bridge is being tolled (after construction and opening) but no tolls prior to. I guess I don’t believe in paying for something that may or may not get built while I am living here. My grandparents paid for the existing 520 bridge AFTER it was built, and it has since been paid off.
And all this talk of blame has, as history has shown itself just her in Washington, gotten us no closer to any solutions.
Again, does anyone know where I can research how my property tax is broke down, city, county, state?

You left out extradimensional; but, you’re right, the “you are so-and-so under another name” schtick has to be another tactic to create a diversion by driving us nuts with the insanity of it all. A simple note to a mod, “does sempersimper post by another other name?” would take care of it,. but the Puddymarvin would rather rant and bullshit. Who knew?
YLB spews:
Hannah: There’s no doubt about it. The old car tabs tax was hated. It was very unpopular and all political leadership was at fault for not doing anything about it. Along came a snake oil salesman like Tim Eyman to throw a bomb into the whole works. The politicians enabled Eyman. But he’s not the solution. He’s just an opportunist who used voter discontent to line his pockets.
The real solution is that all of us are engaged in the political process, we’re educated on the issues and the trade offs and that we demand our politicians to make the best available choices.
Eyman’s tax revolt has just wasted a lot of time. The transportation needs are still there and now it costs a lot more to build transportation solutions. There’s global competition for resources. China, India and other places compete for everything from cement to engineering services. That drives costs up.
So that’s why you’re seeing tolls. If we don’t want to tax ourselves more, then there’s just no money. We have no choice.
It doesn’t always have to be that way though. We can tax like in other states and make the tax system more fair. A poor person shouldn’t have to pay a larger percentage of their income in taxes than a rich person. That’s just not fair but that’s how it is in this state. This state has the most unfair tax system of any state. Don’t take my word for it. That’s the judgement of the 2002 commission on taxation that was run by Bill Gates, Sr. – a staunch Republican.
I live in Seattle and I sure don’t want to see another viaduct. The current one is noisy and ugly enough but a new one will be bigger and uglier and noisier still. A bigger freeway through my city’s waterfront is not a gift I want to leave to my kids.
