Yes, I’m disappointed that the Flyers lost, but I’m downright pissed that I didn’t get to see the end of the game because my stream crapped out just at the beginning of overtime. And why was I streaming a game that was nationally broadcast on NBC? Because fucking KING-5, for the second time in this Stanley Cup Finals series, decided they couldn’t be bothered to preempt goddamn Evening Magazine and Inside Edition to pick up the network feed.
I’m struggling to stream sudden death overtime — the most exciting event in professional sports — and with the Stanley Fucking Cup on the line at that, and KING-5 is broadcasting a Jean Enersen best-of interview show. I mean, what the fuck?
Thanks a lot KING-5 for giving the finger to local hockey fans.
Giffy spews:
The game was broadcast on KONG, but yeah it should have been on KING.
Stupid Chicago.
czechsaaz spews:
Well the game was on KONG which may not be helpful if you’re dealing with broadcast only but it is basic cable. Plus on basic cable in these parts I get CBC which is the class of Hockey Broadcasting.
But I agree in principal.
Proud To Be An Ass spews:
You want us to give up learning the latest “who done it?” plastic surgery gossip from Hollywood for a hockey game?
Have you no decency, sir? :) :)
czechsaaz spews:
Hey, even identical time stamps!!!
Daniel K spews:
Ok, so the Blackhawks won in 6, not 5 as I predicted.
Congrats Chicago!
Goldy spews:
The game was on KONG? I had no idea. I didn’t even bother checking KONG this time because I don’t think the previous game was on there. Stupid me for tuning in to my local NBC affiliate and expecting to see the NBC network feed.
Still, KING sucks. This was the Stanley Cup Finals.
czechsaaz spews:
@3
Actually I missed the second period. I was busy doing blow and shots with LiLo.
Mark Centz spews:
The Stanley Cup belongs back in Seattle. It’s been almost a hundred years now. Why this town doesn’t have a hockeyphillic billionaire is beyond me.
Daniel K spews:
I think game 2 was also on KONG.
Mr. Motion spews:
Were any of the interviews about shoplifting?
proud leftist spews:
Maybe I should learn to love hockey. The Mariners most certainly suck this year.
Derek Young spews:
I feel your pain. Not a hockey fan but I love soccer and we’re constantly kicked in the balls for coverage.
Broadway Joe spews:
The problem isn’t with KING or KONG. It’s the fact that the NHL has a shitty US TV deal. When the NHL came back from their lockout, ESPN offered them a deal, but there was no upfront money, which is similar to contracts the Worldwide Leader held with the Arena Football League and Major League Soccer. Instead the NHL opted for contracts with NBC Comcast’s Versus (then Outdoor Life Network) when their offers included upfront money instead of revenue-sharing. Since then, Versus has barely grown as a network despite gaining college football deals with the PAC-10 and Mountain West Conference. Meanwhile, NBC finds little room for the NHL in its schedule, preferring golf, tennis and ‘action sports’. The NHL absolutely needs to get back on either ESPN or FOX Sports to improve its visibility.
Personally I’m a huge Don Cherry fan, so that means watching the CBC instead. Coverage of a sport by people who actually know of what they speak? What a concept.
EvergreenRailfan spews:
Mark Centz, the Metropolitans could have repeated in 1919, but most of the Montreal squad came down with the flu(it was in the midst of the 1919 Influenza Pandemic), and forfeited, but the Seattle Coach rejected the forfeit. It is one of the few times the Stanley Cup was not awarded. Seattle did win in 1917 though.
@2, I believe CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada actually started on Radio, and the legendary Canadian Hockey Broadcaster, Foster Hewitt had a good opening for the show then, “Hello Canada, and Hockey fans in the United States and Newfoundland”(At the time, Newfoundland was not part of Canada, would join in 1949). He was the one that coined “He shoots, he scores” when goals were scored.
Luigi Giovanni spews:
CBC is the place to be for hockey (said by a libertarian).

@8
We have a few of those in the tech industry. But we need an arena.
Poster Child spews:
Last month Versus cut away from the run-in to a bunch sprint finish (Finale, if you will) in the Tour of California to go to a Hockey play-offs pre-game show.
But if you wanted to watch the NFL college draft live all day I’m sure you could. You’d just need to know which channel to be watching…
Mr. Cynical spews:
Goldy–
Why are you so upset?
The Flyers lost…and my BlackHawks finally won. Yeah, it’s been 50 years….but it seems like only yesterday!
We have DirectTV. It’s awesome. They have an NHL Channel in addition to games on Versus. Plus you can buy a Hockey Package.
Goldy–
Did you ever think about calling KING5?
A simple phone call or visiting their website would have saved you all this self-induced angst.
My, oh my you are fragile & psychotic Goldy.
If something like this pisses you off…when the answer was a phone call or channel change away…I don’t know how you will survive even a day after the Cascadian Faultine rips and Seattle is half-leveled without God to guide you & comfort you.
Take a half-dozen deep breathes.
The game will be replayed at some point…and your Flyers will still have lost!
BigGlen spews:
Goldy,
The NHL really does not care much about Seattle, so why should Seattle care about the NHL? More people probably wanted to watch evening magazine than hockey. I just wish that they would stop airing NBA games in Seattle.
UndercoverBrother spews:
ice hockey….especially the National League proved once again to be the greatest game played by men or women.
a great winter oly tourney in Vancouver…a classic U20 IIHF tourney over the x-mas holiday…a wonderful Memorial Cup…a RECORD SETTING IIHF Word Championship in Germany….and the greatest 2 month Toruney in all of sport to EARN Lord Stanley’s Cup.
it is the opnion of this expert that Belo did the Seattle market a solid by using KONG to broadcast the finals. still able to ring the register for KING’s local news and appease the bosses at Universal by showing the games in HD in this market.
Belo had the right to not show it at all if they wanted and being the NHL/NBC contract is for no money to the league, Gary and Friends would have had no beef.
UndercoverBrother spews:
to be honest….most of those that post here no NOTHING about anything and even less about sports…especially this sport.
you people are good for a laugh at the very least.
UndercoverBrother spews:
for those that posted about the CBC coverage…enjoy it now cause they will be losing their rights on the next contract.
UndercoverBrother spews:
@13.
umm….sorry NO that is not how it happened.
the mouse house made NO offer to the National League….NONE….ZIP. they chased after the NBA for big money and made it clear no NHL when they did.
NBC, then owned by GE, made them an offer similar to the AFL deal…no money unless a profit was turned by the network and then it would be a 50-50. OLN (now Vs.) is owned by Comcast and they own the Flyers so they have an interst in the NHL and were willing to pay a rights fee.
i won’t tell you that Vs. could be compared to the Mouse House and ESPN but they have surpassed FOX Sports in ad revenues and will be the next home to MLS, if it can survive.
the bottom line here is that hockey does not move the dial so no smart business person would give it a prime-time slot in the US.
i do agree Don Cherry is the best thing to happen to TV sports since Howard Cosell.
Steve spews:
KLOWN sez of Goldy, “you are fragile & psychotic”
Well, you’ve got to admit, Goldy, that our NPD freak in a KLOWN Kostume really does know a thing or two about psychosis. But I think you can rest easy as I somehow suspect that this is just more KLOWN projection on his part. Eh, I hear it’s a Psych 101 thing with him. Something to do with goats.
UndercoverBrother spews:
@14…strong post!!!
Steve spews:
@19 “I just wish that they would stop airing NBA games in Seattle.”
This former Sonics season ticket holder says fuck the NBA. If it hurts the NBA’s ratings to air games here, then I’m all for it. I know damned well I’ll never watch another NBA game again. They can go fuck themselves.
Steve spews:
I’ll never forget Guy Fielder. Not much at the NHL level, but he had many great years for the old Seattle Totems. Guy was very smooth with his moves on the ice. He brought some grace and class to what was then just a minor league cow-town.
UndercoverBrother spews:
@26;
that is just STUPID!!!
you obviously are not a fan of basketball and you spent money on season tix….WHY???
ConservativeFirst spews:
There a numerous job listings for qualified programmers that would provide you the financial flexibility to purchase cable or satellite television.
I’m just sayin’.
czechsaaz spews:
Compare Don Cherry to the only recognizable face (O.K. actual hockey fans know most of the U.S. broadcasters) Barry Melrose.
One had a 20 year playing career, 700 NHL games and won the Calder cup, 74 goals, 199 assists. One played 300 games, 10 goals, 25 assists.
One coached a team to a Canada cup and World Championship. One coached a high salaried team with the greatest player (Of his generation, no doubt, ever, probably) in the history of the game to a Stanley Cup Finals Loss.
One is known for his eccentric fashion. One is known for his mullet.
And Barry is the “name” broadcaster of the sport in the U.S. Give me CBC anytime.
Steve spews:
Stupid? One doesn’t have to watch the NBA in order to prove one’s love basketball. I play the game and I avidly watch college and high school hoops. I’d been a Sonics fan since day one to the final game chants of “Save our Sonics!”. If you think I have to watch the NBA on the fucking toob after that league and everybody else screwed the Seattle fans in order for me to be a fan of basketball in your eyes, then you’re the stupid one. Like I said, fuck the NBA.
Uh oh, Chongo! spews:
@31
GO ZAGS!
Steve spews:
Go Chieftains!, er, Go Redhawks!
I read somewhere that SU had more players go into the NBA during the 1960’s than any other college or university. I wonder if that’s true?
Steve spews:
The CU Buffs have accepted an invitation to join the Pac-10. Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are expected to be next. Sigh! Some change is hard to accept. Hell, I’m still pissed that ASU and Arizona are in the conference.
czechsaaz spews:
Well, as long as we’ve strayed into Pac-10…
Cheat On U.$.C.
And the Joe McKnight issue is still out there…

Au contraire.
I went to hockey games in Philly before there was an NHL team there — the EHL Ramblers, who played in the Arena at 45th & Market. Enjoyed the titles won by the Broad Street Bullies, and also saw a few games of the WHA Blazers (Pie McKenzie, Danny Lawton, and an over-the-hill Bernie Parent). I’ve since transferred my loyalties to the Penguins, as I lived in Pittsburgh during just about all of Mario’s pre-owner career.
Goldy, who was just a kid during the days of the Bullies, has remained a Flyers diehard. He too is a real hockey fan.

What was really funny about King moving the game to ch 6/16 was that they still had the EPG (Extended Program Guide on over-the-air DTV) showing it on ch 5.

Thanks Cyn. Now I’ve got the image of Goldy in a baseball cap and sleeveless flannel stuck in my head….
This may require therapy.
UndercoverBrother spews:

i will not doubt or question your love of the game.
just the simple lack of understanding of it…the business of to be more specific.
UndercoverBrother spews:
@31.
and the NBA and it’s fans say fuck you.
only a ‘fan’ would blame the league for their own failures.
the NBA did not take ‘your’ sonics…the owner sold to another owner and he was within his rights to place that business anywhere he likes.
the NBA does not enjoy an anti-trust exemption like MLB….owners can actually own a business and place it in markets that they choose to.
Broadway Joe spews:
8 & 16:
The biggest fish would be John McCaw, Jr. He held at least partial ownership of the Vancouver Canucks from 1997 to 2006. He and his brothers have been involved in rumors about purchasing an NHL franchise and moving it to Seattle or Portland for several years, even predating John Jr.’s involvement with the Canucks. And Paul Allen was among those bidding for the Pittsburgh Penguins during their darkest hours, with an eye towards moving them to Portland.
But Lee’s right, an arena better suited to the NHL (or perhaps more importantly, the larger surface of an international-caliber rink if you want to think Olympics) is an absolute necessity. And we all know that’s not happening any time soon.
Broadway Joe spews:
34:
At least when the PAC-10 expands to the PAC-16, UA and ASU would probably move to an Eastern Division with the Big XII teams. That help any?
Steve spews:
I wrote, “that league and everybody else screwed the Seattle fans”
You wrote, “the NBA did not take ‘your’ sonics…”
If I had written what you say I wrote then you might actually have a fucking point. But I didn’t, and you don’t.
Breaking news here, folks,
“the owner sold to another owner”
WTF? Really? Geez, you mean they didn’t even have to get approval from the league and the other team owners?
Remember Mr. Starbucks’ 5-Year Plan, the Roadmap to the Championship? Remember the great show that was going to a Sonics game? Four years into the Big Plan new owner Clay Bennett couldn’t even cough up bus fare to bring a high school band to play at halftime, Rashard was in Orlando, Ray was in Boston, and Ms. Wingnut and I were stuck with season tickets for this shit. Before we were even five years into the Championship Plan the team was on its way to OKC and our politicians were announcing the move with shit-eating grins on their fucking faces.
You’re fucking clueless. No, don’t thank me. I just thought you should know.
I am a basketball fan and I say fuck the NBA. I’m not watching that shit.
Steve spews:
@43 “That help any?”
A silver lining! Thank you. I feel a little bit better now.

Let me quote this straight from Wikipedia:
“In the United States NHL games are aired nationally by Versus (previously the “Outdoor Life Network” and “OLN”), and by NBC. NBC replaced the previous over-the-air network, ABC, and has a revenue-sharing agreement with the NHL. Versus replaced ESPN as the cable network; Comcast, which owns Versus, offered a two-year $120 million agreement, while ESPN offered a revenue sharing agreement.”
ESPN did offer a contract to the NHL, but they took the upfront money Comcast and GE offered instead.
Versus is becoming the home of a lot of misfit sports, like Zuffa’s UFC spinoff World Extreme Cagefighting (and a coed team version of K-1 before that), outdoor sports, and cycling. The NHL pretty much fits right in. And by the way, MLS is doing a lot better than you would seem to think. And MLS is just a part of ESPN’s deal with Soccer United Marketing, which also covers the World Cup and most Men’s and Women’s National Team matches.
