I spent most of the morning speaking to a couple civics classes at Seattle’s Center School, and knowing nothing else about the school except my interaction with these students, I’d happily send my daughter there.
Perhaps the rest of the students are delinquents, and all the other teachers suck, I dunno, but these two classes at least were great. So don’t let anybody tell you it’s impossible to innovate within the public schools.

Sounds as if you met some great kids.
What I saw of the school at their website worries me….
Is Center School really, as its website suggests, run by some vague authority? God? The principle? The current Super is of the all-kids-can-learn persuasion and CS doe not seem like her kind of thing. Remember she ROTATES principles regularly … russian roulette is not a good way to keep anything unique running.
I also saw NOTHING on the site about the qualifications of the teachers! Either the site is bad or the teachers are subject to the usual STA lowest common denominator/seniority rules.
I also note from their site that the curriculum is .. less than awesome. Only one language is offered, Spanish, and that for only two years. The math curriculum looks pretty dated .. no computer electives, statistics, or sets .. just old fashioned and not too useful calculus. I’ll bet these offerings pale next to what Goldy’s daughter gets at her school over the bridge!
Of course BEING at Seattle Center must mean something … as in words like “arts” in the school’s mission statement. BUT words are just words and if there really are any programs or courses resulting from this nifty location, I did not see them. Nor, as part of the UW faculty closest to this school, have we .. as far as know .. any contacts with it.
Oddly, DESPITE the location, the activities listed on the site never mention anything going on in the Opera House, Exhibition Hall, EMP, Gates Center, etc. …
As for parents, that usual dirty word to the SPS, seems missing from the site. Do they have a PTSA? CS does have an oddly named Center School Community Association (CSCA). WTF? Is there some community I have not noticed living on the grounds of Seattle Center? Are PARENTS involved in this school at all?
I hope all of this is just a badly done website!
