Man… am I a trendsetter, or what? Just the other day I post a Christmas Happy Holiday carol parody, and today James Vesely publishes a song parody of his own in the Seattle Times: “I’ve got those 2005 blues.”
As a bit of a lyricist myself (I’ve got an Off-Broadway musical flop to my credit), I thought Vesely did an okay job. He was a bit loosey-goosey with the rhyme and meter, but you can get away with that with the blues. Still, he’s no Ira Gershwin, and I suggest he stick to prose if he wants to keep his day job.
There is one verse in particular on which I have a few comments though….

First… rhyming “media” and “schizophrenia”…? Ouch. That may be a good enough lyric for an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, but no self-respecting lyricist would touch that one with a ten foot pole. I know a place where you can get a really great rhyming dictionary.

While the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal is conservative, the newspaper’s news pages are liberal, even more liberal than The New York Times. The Drudge Report may have a right-wing reputation, but it leans left. Coverage by public television and radio is conservative compared to the rest of the mainstream media. Meanwhile, almost all major media outlets tilt to the left.
These are just a few of the surprising findings from a UCLA-led study, which is believed to be the first successful attempt at objectively quantifying bias in a range of media outlets and ranking them accordingly.
“I suspected that many media outlets would tilt to the left because surveys have shown that reporters tend to vote more Democrat than Republican,” said Tim Groseclose, a UCLA political scientist and the study’s lead author. “But I was surprised at just how pronounced the distinctions are.”
“Overall, the major media outlets are quite moderate compared to members of Congress, but even so, there is a quantifiable and significant bias in that nearly all of them lean to the left,” said co‑author Jeffrey Milyo, University of Missouri economist and public policy scholar.

An oppressed people are now free to select their own govt. They are now able to join the civilized world, and to hopefully transform the Middle East, along with Israel, into a new opportunity.

What dream world are you leaving in? Iraq isn’t even a country. It’s a set of arbitrary lines drawn on a map by Europeans for their own convenience. It’s three tribal groupings who hate each other thrown together under a common flag. Iraqis don’t even have running water or electricity, much less this thing you call “freedom.” When people can’t even walk to the market without risking their lives, how free are they? The things you speak of are a vision that is far from being realized and which may be little more than a pipe dream.

I suppose it’s just a coincidence that Iraq oil production contracts are going exclusively to U.S. companies while U.S. troops occupy Iraq.
It is not a matter of who owns the oil but who controls the flow of oil and oil profits. The United States was one of the world’s leading oil producers after WWII. There was little need for imported oil. Even so, the U.S. government trained attention on the Middle East. Why? The State Department explained then that the oil constitutes “a stupendous source of strategic power, and one of the greatest material prizes in world history” (emphasis mine).
Controlling the distribution of oil resources provides that strategic power, in a world that depends on oil. U.S. policymakers want leverage over the economies of our biggest competitors — Western Europe, Japan and China — which are more dependent on Middle Eastern oil. This is why the U.S. supports reactionary regimes like Saudi Arabia, dictatorships such as Iran under the Shah and our regional military surrogate, Israel. What was obtained from these slimy relationships was control of oil flow.
Will you righties stop acting like capitalists like free markets. The only freedom they care about is their freedom to exploit markets. Capitalists don’t want competitors. They want buyers (slaves.)

Well, non-Jewish religious societies haven’t been all that great for Jews either, so I’ll refrain from speculating. However, the U.S. is far from a secular society. There is reason to believe it is becoming less Christian, but that is not the same thing.
We are supposed to have a secular government, and that is what I have seen civil libertarians fighting for.
