Short summary: Wash. State higher education spending per student is just about in the middle of the national rankings (by State), but Washington students graduation rates are among the highest in the nation (# 1 for bachelor’s degrees, # 2 for post-graduate degrees). But ranking in terms of dollars spent per 1000 population is pretty bad.
We are educating a few people very well, but reduced state funding has resulted in few people being able to participate. With the drastic budget cuts being dealt out now, the state Universities will be cutting back on in-state students and giving those slots to out-of-state students who are willing to pay big money to attend – just to pay the bills for a while.
Of course, I’ve always been amazed at the idea that anyone would want to pay their employees average or below-average salaries. When you do that, you get only average or below-average employees, with corresponding results.

Many people work in higher education because they believe in the way it can change lives. Talk to the people who work in the financial aid offices and you will quickly learn that many of the students are not wealthy or middle class.
I think it is true for each of the 6 public baccalaureate institutions that maintaining access regardless of ability to pay is essential. However everyone does have to increase the number of non-resident students to pay the bills.
Some of the governor’s key advisers on the issue of higher education have simply decided that degree production is reduced to something more like “number of widgets” rather than more for the social good.
Business wants compliant fodder for the employee pool, perhaps. The governor’s advisers want two classes of employees: The ones who know how to care, but don’t and the ones who are too busy trying to survive to spend much existential energy on say, social justice concerns.
But where will the kids get their “get out of jail free” cards if they don’t have universities to attend for their high education?
Well, I don’t see what’s so wrong with making the mutton eaters pay their own way for once!
Let’s build a society based on non coercion and get the damn government out of the entire education business!
Getting the government out of education will guarantee discrimination, incredibly high tuition, fraud and abuse. That’s what we have in private and for-profit education now. Don’t even have to wonder if it will be better than what government offers. It won’t.

08…BS, both of my kids went to private schools, and I wouldn’t have put them in public schools if I had to work day and night to give them a great education. All we have in Public schools is SEUI Unions.. No Thanks!
The latest survey by Seattle pollster Stuart Elway shows Gov. Chris Gregoire’s negatives have increased with 61 percent disapproving of her job performance compared 57 percent in June. Her positive ratings were stuck at 38 percent.
#8 I want to get the government out of the education business because I am an extremist when it comes to freedom of speech and too often have seen some local group push to have its agenda taught. We can add the numerous quality issues to that.
But at the college level the private schools often take a public relations beating which is unfortunate because in many states the private colleges are doing a better job of educating students from low income families than the government schools. It would be interesting to look at the demographics of the colleges and universities here in Washington and get a better picture of which schools do the best.

— Define exactly *how many* a.) states and b.) private colleges. “Many” is a weasel-word for your ideology.
— Define “better”. I bet your definition is narrow or inconsistent across the cases.
— How do you feel about legacy admissions then? How’s that treating your bluecollar folk you claim to speak for?
As Goldy, the UW, and countless studies have shown, public higher ed in this state has been a bargain. Our tuition has been lower than comparable states; we pay our faculty lower than those in other states; this state has funded higher ed lower than in comparable states.
I would think you’d be rejoicing at the bargain BL… Government’s been saving you money for decades.
