Sen. Ted Stevens isn’t the only Alaska Republican who might be in hot water. The state’s Legislative Council, a bipartisan panel made up of both state senators and state representatives, voted earlier this week to spend up to $100,000 investigating Gov. Sarah Palin’s firing of the state’s former public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan. The investigation will consider whether Palin sacked Monegan because he wouldn’t fire Mike Wooten, a state trooper who’s Palin’s former brother-in-law, and whether Monegan was pressured to fire Wooten by Palin or members of her family or administration.
Wooten is currently going through a bitter divorce and custody battle with Palin’s younger sister. Monegan says he did feel pressure to fire the trooper before he himself was fired on July 11. Palin replaced Monegan with Chuck Kopp, but Kopp resigned last week over revelations of a 2005 sexual harassment complaint against him.

Bonus: Palin comes with her own scandal:
AK Gov. Says Staffer Pressed for Trooper’s Firing
By Kate Klonick – August 13, 2008, 9:53PM
In a press conference this afternoon, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) conceded that someone inside her administration pressured the state’s Department of Public Safety to fire State Trooper Mike Wooten, Palin’s former brother-in-law, who is now embroiled in a bitter custody battle with Palin’s sister.
Palin’s statement is the latest in what has come to be known around Alaska as “Wooten-gate.” The scandal began on July 11, when Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan was fired from his post with little explanation, a move that quickly raised questions in Alaska.
A few days later, Monegan came forward, stating that he had been pressured by those around Palin to fire Wooten — but had refused to do so — a choice that he believes led to his sudden dismissal. Palin denied Monegan’s accusations, and a Legislative Council has appointed a special commission to probe the matter.
In today’s conference, Palin said that state troopers had taped a phone call from Frank Bailey, Palin’s director of boards and commissions whom she appointed last August, in which Bailey inquired about having Wooten fired.
At the press conference today, Palin distanced herself from Bailey’s actions claiming that he acted alone, but the recordings suggest that he was acting at her instigation.
“The Palins can’t figure out why nothing’s going on,” Bailey said in the recorded phone call. “So Todd and Sarah are scratching their heads saying ‘Why is this guy representing the department, he’s a horrible recruiting tool.’ You know? So from their perspective everybody’s protecting him. . . Audi probably disagrees with me, Walt [Monegan] does and I understand it’s really touchy, but I just want you to understand that cops that use excessive force or go out of the lines, they just have no tolerance, because they’ve seen the facts personally.”
Bailey has yet to comment. Calls to his phone went directly to voice mail.
Late update: Audio of Frank Bailey’s recorded phone conversation has been released on the governor’s state website, you can listen to it here.

I’m not terribly sure, because Ferraro was a much more experienced pol than Palin (who may be an ex-Governor by the time the election comes up, from what I hear), but I think it has to do with……..desperation. Let’s face it kids, after the Reagan Years, even with that twit Quayle as his veep for four years, given the mood of the country a dead squirrel would’ve won the White House if it was a Republican. Which is what George I always looked like to me anyway. Dukakis was bland and milquetoast, and doomed from the start, hence the selection of Ferraro.
I’ll never forget the video of the Duke riding in the turret of an Abrams tank that year, looking utterly pathetic in doing so. But I still voted for him.

We all know how much steve likes to talk about projection. Well, here’s someone elese that sees projection.
“If you don’t have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from,” Barack Obama declared last night.
Talk about projection.
…
While Obama launched an all-out assault on McCain and called for change, his nearly 4,700-word speech included just 79 words that could even vaguely be construed as him pointing to a record of actually bringing about change.
…
Not only did Obama find little to say about his actual record, but in order to inoculate himself from accusations of embellishment, he had to qualify his statement by speaking of himself as a passive observer (”I’ve seen it”) and collectivizing the achievements (”we worked”).
…
With this speech, it has now become abundantly clear that Obama won’t make a serious attempt to argue that he has any real accomplishments. Instead, his campaign is banking on the fact that the desire for change is so deep, and the contempt for President Bush so fierce, that merely linking McCain to the administration and representing something different will be enough to put him over the top.
And what is obama’s record again??? Besides change and hope?

Sorry guys…but women who lived through the feminist movement will not be stirred by a candidate just because she’s female. Palin’s stand on choice (against) and the environment (people are more important than the rest of the natural world) and, it seems, family planning will not make her attractive to those women who strongly supported Hillary. Obama picks a man with many decades of experience. Someone who is proven to be a tough leader, stares down the worlds dictators, someone who understands foreign affairs, and the military.
McSHAME picks a woman with 18 months experience as a governor, a few years experience as a mayor of teeny, tiny town of 5,740 people, and won a PTA slot.
McSHAME is 72. The average lifespan of an American male surviving cancer is 75. The odds say he will die in office during his first term if elected and certainly in his second term.
Is she really ready to deal with a new and militarily aggressive Russia?
Can she really handle Iran?
Is she ready to deal with North Korea’s nukes?
What about an unstable Pakistan?
Who can she lean on in Washington should John McSHAME die in office?
Who does she known in the corridors of power in Washington?

I don’t get it wingnuts. Aren’t those royalty checks “redistribution” and “socialism” – doesn’t that mean oil companies have less capital to increase production and lower prices?
Yes–Just because the government social program check is used to build barges doesn’t mean it isn’t socialism. Communist countries the world-over do exactly the same thing–and with exactly the same graft paid to Politburo comrades (Here, we call them CEOs).
I can at least respect the Democrats who (1) admit freely that they are supporting government social programs, (2) spend FAR LESS on government social programs than do the “Republicans”, and (3) direct the bulk of government social programs toward ensuring a minimum “safety net” for all vs. ensuring a gold-plated crapper in the bathroom for “Republican” Politburo elites only.
This country is still under attack, and the anti-American terrorists are those who have taken control of the “Republican” party.
Thinking this through a little bit, I quickly totaled up a few things.
Obama says “change” although he is the consummate Washington insider and Biden has been in D.C. 5 years longer than McCain. Both are rated as the furthest left of their kind.
McCain’s tag is a “maverick”. Consistently voted against his party on any number of issues and picks a woman who won her governor’s seat with an anti-corruption plank. And she carried it out. She made her chops by running against the GOP establishment. She also has a larger portfolio of accomplishment than Obama.
Looks like the McCain and Palin are the real agents of change for the country.

McCain’s tag is a “maverick”. Consistently voted against his party on any number of issues
Uhhh, what issues? Could you list a few? All the stuff I’ve seen that defined his maverick-ness was a matter of degrees.
Example: the RNC platform calls for a constitutional amendment on gay marriage. He’s not for the amendment. He’s not for gay marriage, and would do all in his power to block it, but he just doesn’t want the constitutional amendment. So if the RNC is 100%, he’s 90%. Yeah, that’s real maverickness.
Palen seems more likely to actually buck the republican power structure than john “Noun, Verb, I was a P.O.W.” mccain.

McCain: Obama Lacks Experience Running 5,000-Person Town in Alaska
Extolls Veep Pick’s Qualifications
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz)used the announcement of his vice-presidential
pick, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, to blast the experience of his
Democratic rival, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill), arguing that Sen. Obama has
never been the mayor of a 5,000-person town.
“The Presidency of the United States of America is the toughest job on
the planet,” Sen. McCain said. “And my friends, the best testing ground
for that job is being the mayor of a 5,000-person town in Alaska.”
Sen. McCain unleashed a savage attack on Sen. Obama, claiming that his
Democratic opponent would be “at a loss” when faced with the challenges
of running a 5000-person municipality in Alaska.
“Let’s say a constituent calls you and says that a caribou has wandered
onto his front lawn,” he said. “My friends, Barack Obama wouldn’t know
what to do.”
He used the hypothetical situation to draw a sharp contrast with his
vice-presidential choice: “Sarah Palin would take out her gun and shoot
the caribou.”
Mr. McCain said that an understanding of foreign affairs, Congress, and
other issues that a president has to deal with is “overrated,” adding,
“That’s what Presidency for Dummies’ is for.”
While saying that her “vast experience” was the main reason he selected
Gov. Palin, Sen. McCain said that she also had the other three
qualifications he was looking for in a vice president: “She is pro-life,
pro-drilling, and willing to housesit.”

…But would any of those FDR New Deal programs have been possible were it not for the Republican Congress, the Republican Senate, and the Republican President who created the federal income tax to pay for them?…
The 16th amendment [enabling the federal income tax] became law on February 3, 1913, when enough states had ratified it. It represents yet another liberal socialist (or “communist”, if you insist) nail in the coffin eroding states rights and expanding both the operating cost as well the control of the growing federal bureaucracy over our lives.
Roll back 4 years or so from that: Addressing Congress on June 16, 1909, President Taft, a Republican, proposed a constitutional amendment allowing a federal income tax on individuals (The text of this address can be found at: http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu.....?pid=68517 ).
The resolution for the 16th amendment was passed by the 61st Congress and submitted to the states for ratification on July 12, 1909. William Howard Taft, a Republican, was the President of the United States at the time, and both houses had an overwhelming Republican majority. In the Senate, the Republicans outnumbered Democrats by nearly 2 to 1, with 60 Republicans to 32 Democrats. In the House, the Republicans outnumbered Democrats 219 to 172.

Wow, A little digging finds all sorts of truths. Nothing in the reports makes me trust her. I still think she abused her power.
Monegan and his department were getting too far out in front of Palin, acting in ways that were independent and contrary to the governor’s wishes. Palin needed to replace Monegan with someone who would be seen but not heard while doing the governor’s bidding.
That’s why Palin replaced Monegan with Chuck Kopp from Kenai, an old Palin family acquaintance who is more likely to follow the governor’s line and never say no.
Mr. Wooten told investigators he tested a Taser stun gun on the boy at his request but never threatened the Palins. An internal police investigation substantiated the stun-gun incident and some other charges but threw out most of the rest. Mr. Wooten was suspended for five days in 2006.
The Palins have made several accusations against Wooten and said they feared for the governor’s safety. An internal trooper investigation in 2005 found all but two of the allegations to be unsubstantiated — an illegal moose killing and a tasering of an 11-year-old. Wooten was disciplined.

But she has such high approval ratings around 80%. I thought Palin was well liked in her state? Will she still be allowed to be Governor while running as VP or does the Lt. Governor take over? In other words today she gave up the governorship by accepting McCains VP choice?
Oh honey, her approval ratings have been sinking fast. If you are from another state, please note that she is known by many aliases, many of which portray her in a very negative fashion. She’s from a tiny town in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley called Wasilla. Some call her Saracuda, some call her the Mat-Su Barbie. She is mean and vindictive. She recently called a man at home who had the “gall” to write a negative letter to the editor about her. She’s a power hungry people destroyer. She is full of lies. Keep an eye on her and watch what gets uncovered. To anyone out there: If you know where I can get a copy of that photo of her Proudly wearing a “Valley-Trash” tee shirt would you post it here please?

True enough, but her sister’s divorce litigation files read like a three ring circus. Two highly contentious parents fighting over their children. Read my link in 167 and 186 above, and you will see how private citizen Sarah Palin in 2005 (before she became governor) was trying to shovel all sorts of manure on her (now)ex-brother-in-law in an attempt to get him fired from the Alaska State Patrol.
Michael Wooten is certainly no saint. Seems like he should have been fired, but the Alaska State Patrol has a pretty low standard of acceptable conduct and a pretty lenient system of discipline.
As for Wooten’s personal life, he was already deeply involved with his next wife (Angela Johnson) by the time Molly McCann (Palin’s sister) filed for divorce on April 11, 2005. Wooten married Johnson soon after his divorce from McCann was finalized on January 31, 2006. And Wooten managed to file for an agreed divorce from Johnson on June 6, 2007. (Fortunately, Wooten had no children with Johnson!)

Before her meteoric rise to political success as governor, just two short years ago Sarah Palin was the mayor of Wasilla. I had a good chuckle at MSN.com’s claim that she had been the mayor of “Wasilla City”. It is not a city. Just Wasilla. Wasilla is the heart of the Alaska “Bible belt” and Sarah was raised amongst the tribe that believes creationism should be taught in our public schools, homosexuality is a sin, and life begins at conception. She’s a gun-toting, hang ‘em high conservative.
Alaska is small town politics. When I last lived there, in Ketchikan, I knew all the politicians that counted. Rising to the top there doesn’t mean you are cream. This whole thing is a total soap opera. Palin’s sister was Wooten’s THIRD wife. Wooten’s then-girlfriend (and later FOURTH wife) was still married to one of her husbands, when she started hooking up with the still-married Wooten. Certainly, the account in your article would be contradicted by the August 10, 2005 e-mail. Your article claims that Sarah Palin filed an affidavit with the court (presumably the McCann-Wooten post-divorce custody modification battle) on April 23, 2008, in which she denied making any claims against Mike Wooten.
However, if Sarah Palin actually told such a blatant lie in the affidavit she filed with the court, why don’t we have any highlighted PDF images of the supposedly perjured declaration? This should be all over the internet by now …
The court docket in Alaska 3AN-05-06836CI Mccann, Molly J vs. Wooten, Michael G.R. does not seem to support the allegation that Palin filed a perjured affidavit on April 23, 2008:
04/23/2008 Notice of Filing Memorandum of Custody Investigator’s Report in Support of Settlement Attorney: Erwin, Roberta C (9411101) Molly J Mccann (Plaintiff)
04/23/2008 Plaintiff’s Settlement Brief Attorney: Erwin, Roberta C (9411101) Molly J Mccann (Plaintiff)
But you would have to look at the actual court filings to see what they contained.

Palin’s selection is the RNC’s sign of de facto surrender. Surrender to the Dobsonites, to corruption, and to Obama.

Progressive women are very aware that the Supreme Court and its members have a tremendous impact on them, their daughters and granddaughters—as well as their husbands, sons and grandsons. Few, if any, will vote for McCain and Palin out of spite about Hillary Clinton.

Biden would have to find a way to succintly demonstrate his considerable foreign and national domestic policy experience while not appearing to beat up on this former mayor of a town of 5,470 people.
I don’t think it will be much of a challenge but the debate could come out to a draw which would not be good.

The VEEP picks were very revealing as to the judgment and character as who’s fit to be Commander-in-Chief.
Untested, unproven, unknown and not ready lead.

G Jiggy spews:
Blue John spews:
At first I liked some of her actions, but look at this way.
If she is willing to abuse her position to fire the State Trooper, maybe the oil companies didn’t do something for her so she abused her position and punished them.
If she is petty and willing to abuse her position for small things, she will likely be petty and abuse her positions for big things.
Ask the repubs, when Hillary was accused of doing this sort of petty power trip thing, it was bad, but when Palen is accused of doing this sort of petty power trip thing, it’s dismissed?

Blue John spews:
Uhhh, what issues? Could you list a few? All the stuff I’ve seen that defined his maverick-ness was a matter of degrees.
Example: the RNC platform calls for a constitutional amendment on gay marriage. He’s not for the amendment. He’s not for gay marriage, and would do all in his power to block it, but he just doesn’t want the constitutional amendment. So if the RNC is 100%, he’s 90%. Yeah, that’s real maverickness.
Palen seems more likely to actually buck the republican power structure than john “Noun, Verb, I was a P.O.W.” mccain.
michael spews:

It was looking like the Alaskan Patrol wasn’t even going to repremand the guy let alone fire him. Palin stepped in and had his ass fired because he was a bum. Simple as that. She never denied not firing him nor denied the calls made by staff to find out why he wasn’t fired. It was all straight-up.

Palin does seem to have some valid points, however, and certainly the accusations she makes look pretty bad on paper.
This whole thing is a total soap opera. Palin’s sister was Wooten’s THIRD wife. Wooten’s then-girlfriend (and later FOURTH wife) was still married to one of her husbands, when she started hooking up with the still-married Wooten. Wooten and this girlfriend apparently had nine children between them, from their numerous marriages or liaisons with other people.
