Well, um… I gotta admit that Mike?™ McGavick has finally come up with a plausible explanation for the disparities between his own account of his 1993 DUI and the official police report. Apparently, Mike?™ blacked out.
Appearing on the Dori Monson Show this afternoon, Mike?™ insisted that he reported the details of his DUI as he remembered them — he just didn’t remember all that much. When asked why he told a reporter that he had merely received a citation, when in fact he was arrested, Mike?™ said that he did not remember being arrested. When Dori pressed on, pointing out that it’s hard to forget being driven to the station and handcuffed to a desk, Mike?™ insisted that he did not remember being handcuffed. The truth is, Mike?™ professed…
“I don’t remember much of what happened after I was pulled over.”
Um… that’s called blacking out, and it’s one of the loudest and clearest warning signs of problem drinking. And it’s not like this episode happened during his irresponsible teens; Mike?™ was 35-years-old at the time, so without evidence to the contrary, it’s pretty hard to imagine his drinking habits have changed all that much over the past 13 years.
Indeed, when Dori asked him if he still drinks, Mike?™ unhesitatingly replied yes. But when asked if he still drinks and drives, Mike?™ qualified his answer: “Drink too much and drive? No.”
Mike?™ made it clear he’s no believer in zero tolerance, and has no qualms about getting behind the wheel of a car as long as he thinks he’s within the legal limit. And that’s fine. Neither do most Americans. But then, most Americans aren’t blackout drunks who are running for the US Senate, and even a conflicted but sympathetic Dori was forced to ponder whether being “so drunk that you don’t remember being put in handcuffs” might raise a question about one’s qualifications for high office.
I never believed that it was the DUI or the drinking itself that was the big issue here, but rather, Mike?™’s lack of candor along with the cynical use of his running-on-the-issues meme to intentionally run away from them. Once again Mike?™ harped on how he’s “so sick of the way we conduct politics these days,” insisting that “issues are too darn important not to talk about.” And yet it was he who raised his own DUI as a campaign issue in the first place.
But now, with his own admission that he drank to the point of blacking out, and that he apparently hasn’t changed his drinking habits in any way, I’m not so sure that the DUI on its own isn’t a relevant talking point in this campaign.
Do we really want to elect a US Senator who occasionally goes on a bender, whether or not he climbs behind the wheel of a car afterwards? I think that those of us who have grown up as children of alcoholics, or who have married into that sort of unstable family life would likely say no. And I think that accounts for a far larger percentage of the voting public than McGavick and his advisors might imagine.
TANGENT ALERT:
There was one other McGavick quote that really stuck in my craw, when he reiterated his regret that he “didn’t get to participate on a regular basis” in his son’s life.
I dunno, maybe I put too much weight in, you know, words… but “didn’t get to” doesn’t sound to me like an admission of responsibility. It wasn’t that McGavick “didn’t get to” participate in his son’s life. He chose not to.
Far be it from me to criticize how another man conducts his family life, but it was McGavick after all who raised this issue in the first place, in the middle of a Senate campaign, in an effort to publicly wring from his personal regret whatever political advantage it might provide.
I’m just saying.
My Left Foot spews:
Please tell me he did not say that and this your sense of humor, the one the WingNuts don’t get, you know, satire.
Please, say it ain’t so, Goldy.
My Left Foot spews:
Well the bullet he fired out of the “personal regret to wring Political Advantage” gun, hit him in the foot. TWICE. Can this man still honestly belive he has any chance. Maria should stop all appearances, get a front row seat and watch Mike? finish imploding. Wait, he is not running against her, he is running against, um, uh, the other Republican challengers.
Doctor JCH Kennedy spews:

rhp6033 spews:
Last week McGavick said pretty much the same thing on KIRO’s afternoon drive show, the “Ron & Don Show”. He said he would “never do it again”, but when they pressed him on whether he had quit drinking, he said he would still drink. He also said he would still drive after drinking. He just said he wouldn’t drink that much and drive.
Personally, I know that when I drink, I’m the last person to know when I’ve had too much. That’s why I don’t drink for “entertainment” – I quit during my college years. Now I only have a beer or wine at business dinners, when it is a cultural problem to decline. My limit then is two beers or two glasses of wine, over the course of three or more hours.
Maybe, at least, Mike McGavick could take the same pledge? No more than two drinks per day?
rhp6033 spews:
Let’s keep this one going….
So, lets summarize some of the reasons why Washington voters should NOT vote for Mike McGavick.
1. He tends to lie, and is rather surprised and offended when he is caught. He lied to his wife about moving back to the west coast. He lied to Safeco employees when he told them there would be no more layoffs. He lied about the reason he was running for office. He lied to the Federal Elections Commmission, when he claimed the “millionaire’s amendment” didn’t apply to his race against Cantwell, because he was only running against his fellow Republcans in the primary. He lied to the press regarding his DUI incident, minimizing his conduct. He lied to Washington voters when he said that Cantwell “voted against Washington families” in refusing to vote for the Republican trifecta legislation. He lied when he said he regretted running a misleading campaign ad (in an earlier campaign), but continues to run the misleading ad against Cantwell. And he continues to lie when he says he would never vote against the interests of Washington families, even if his party instructed him to do so.
2. McGavick is closely tied to Alaska Senator Ted Stevens. Stevens is trying to extract revenge against Cantwell because she wasn’t sufficiently compliant to his plans to develop the Alaska Wildlife Refuge and increase tanker traffic in the Puget Sound. Stevens is leading fundraising efforts for McGavick, which has resulted in his now-embarrasing ties to VECO, the Alaskan Oil company which may be responsible for the recent Prudo Bay oil spill as well as a number of political contribution scandals in Alaska. Which brings forth the question: Does Alaska reallly need a third Senator, and can we afford to give them ours?
3. McGavick is a former insurance company lobbyist and CEO of a large insurance company. For those of us who have worked with insurance companies, or battled against them, this should be reason enough not to vote for him.
4. McGavick is symptomatic of the “revolving door” between large companies, politicians and their aids, and lobbyists, which is an underlying cause of many of the problems in the Republican Congress today. He goes from Congressional campaign manager to lobbyist to company CEO to a candidate for one of the highest offices in our government.
5. McGavick’s 28 million dollar bonus/campaign contribution AFTER HE RESIGNED FROM SAFECO clearly was for something other than two months of transition work and an extension of his “do not compete” agreement from one year to three (his original contract bound him to three years anyway). Do we, as voters and taxpayers, really want to wait around until next year to find out exactly what influence Safeco bought with that kind of money? Do we want to elect a person to the Senate who thought so little of Safeco shareholders that he would extract 28 million of dollars from them, over and above the generous salary and bonus which he earned under his existing contract?
6. McGavick is completely out of touch with the problems faced by Washington voters. He lives in an exclusive gated community, famous for its racist deed restrictions, where even the fire department can’t enter without a prior reservation!
Okay, that’s enough for now. Did I miss anything?

Left Wing Liberalism (LWL) is a psychological personality variable or ideological attitude”.
It is defined as the convergence of four attitudinal clusters in an individual:
1. Politically Correct submission a high degree of submission to the authorities who are perceived to be Politically Correct and legitimate in the society in which one lives. It is good to have a Politically Correct leader.
2. Authoritarian aggression a general aggressiveness, directed against various persons, especially white males, that is perceived to be sanctioned by established Politically Correct authorities. It is acceptable to be cruel to those who are not Politically Correct.
3. Conventionalism a high degree of adherence to the social conventions that are perceived to be Politically Correct, even if they are self-destructive.
4. Self-hatred——a high degree of self-destructiveness which is projected upon ones country, leading to the advocacy of an ideology designed to weaken or disrupt society and/or aid and abet enemy causes and countries.

So as a true compassionate conservative, I’ll lay out the options here for ya Goldy:
1) Open up your wallet and pay more and more property tax every year until you are forced out of your home. Even if you can do it, do you want to make seattle a place where only the rich can live? Or do you not give a fuck about anybody else?
2) Join Eyman’s campaign to fight defeat the tax increase, and expose yourself to be the fucking hypocrite that you are. Admit that you are wrong about taxpayer rights, and thank Tim in pubic for giving you the right to vote on major policy issues.
3) Support the tax hike and agree that the tax money has to be raised, but make somebody other than you pay. You could take the tried and true class envy approach and make those “rich people” in Magnolia and Queen Ann pick up the tab. Remember, a “fair tax” in moonbat parlance is a tax that the other guy has to pay.
4) Or just keep quiet and hope I go away. That’s not gonna happen.

“I know these folks are absolutely bat-shit crazy, but here’s what they say about…”
As to restricting immigration by religion, we have a little problem with that in this country. It’s called the “Bill of Rights”. You may have heard about it when the NRA was talking about the Second Amendment.
The Second Amendment doesn’t really apply to this issue, but the First Amendment does. Let me quote the appropriate section:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”
You are, of course, welcome to campaign that the Bill of Rights should be revoked (except of course for the Second Amendment), as it was obviously a liberal plot to weaken our country. Darn those pesky liberal founding fathers, anyway.

Quite true, there is no Constitutional right to immigrate. Congress, however, is limited in what it may include in laws, including in immigration laws.
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” (got the HTML right this time)
Congress can pass laws restricting immigration by total numbers, even by nationality and presumably by eye color and still remain within the boundries of the Constitution. We can debate the wisdom (or lack thereof) of these laws, but that is not the question at hand.
It cannot pass a law restricting immigration by religion.
“Shall make no law” is about as clear as you can get. It doesn’t say “no law except for immigration quotas”.
Over here among us “libruls” we have considerable respect for the Constitution. That’s why the discussion never even gets started. It’s illegal, unconstitutional, and only bat-shit crazies like the American Falangists and other neo-Nazi groups think it would solve anything anyway.

and a whole bunch of others. We’re those “librul churches” you occasionally hear the right wing grumbling about.
We’re also the folks that, after the media has had its fun watching Jerry Falwell spew hatred all over the screen in neat, 30 second soundbites, come out and say “no, the Bible (or Torah or Qur’an) does not say that!”
Unfortunately, Watching Jerry and Pat shoot off their mouths is far more entertaining than listening to a quiet, prayerful person speaking reasonably. We can’t really blame the media for that. Jerry and Pat manage to put out some really interesting sound bites. Hmmm. Jerry Falwell, Jerry Springer. Coincidence? ;-)
“Crazy reverend calls for hit squads” is just much more likely to sell newspapers than “Christians pray for peace”.

It’s interesting how when he made his confession, he described the incident as a “powerful and humbling event in his life”. Now that it turns out he fudged some of the facts, the answer from his campaign seems to be: “Hey, it was 13 years ago, he can’t be expected to remember all the details!”
I do have a hard time believing he thinks he’ll help himself by saying he “didn’t remember” being arrested (or being in handcuffs, or much of anything else that happened that night). As Goly’s post says, it paints a very unattractive picture of him absolutely falling-down drunk. And even if he DID black out and COULDN’T remember what happened, you’d think he’d have bothered to inquire about the details once he sobered up!
And I am absolutely amazed that he effectively admits to still driving after drinking, only saying that he doesn’t drink “too much” and drive. Well…I’m sure he didn’t think he’d had “too much” to drink on the night of his arrest, either. The trouble with alcohol is that it impairs one’s judgment. Way too many people have gotten behind the wheel thinking they haven’t had “too much” to drink, only to end up with a DUI citation — or worse, in a serious accident.

As you point out, Congress can, and did, restrict immigration by nationality. Restricting immigration from Moslem countries would restrict Moslem immigration.
And you did evade the question; the question was is a high level of Moslem immigration good for America, not whether or not the First Amendment has been good for the country. As I explained, Moslem immigration could be restricted by nationality. Could you answer with a yes or no to is a high level of Moslem immigration good for America?
As I predicted, liberals will continue to evade the question.

As far as whether this is a campaign issue: Look, if it turned out Maria Cantwell had had an incident like this 13 years ago, I’d be disappionted, and I’d fervently hope she’d put such behavior firmly in her past, but I’d still vote for her. Not because I’d think a DUI arrest was “irrelevent” but because I’d still think helping to get something resembling a check on the Bush administration’s power is much MORE relevant, at least as far as the country’s welfare is concerned.
I don’t expect the DUI incident to sway the votes of any die-hard Republican McGavick supporters. It may, however, sway the votes of some undecided voters. And that’s legitimate. Granted, it was 13 years ago, but he showed horrendously bad judgment. Then it turned out that he couldn’t even “come clean” without fibbing on some of the details. Now it’s becoming more apparent just HOW drunk he really was, and it sounds likely that he may still drink pretty heavily. I’d say all these things could be considered relevant in deciding whether he should go to the US Senate.
Laura in WA spews:
Finally, regarding all the comments about the Kennedys: since McGavick isn’t running against any of the Kennedys, I don’t see how it’s relevant.

You know what bothers me more than muslims? Lying bloodthirsty traitors running our country. A bunch of hypocrites invading and occupying non threatening countries, and making the whole world our enemies.
The invasion of Iraq has fueled the fires of hatred. I saw an expert on Bin Laden state tonight on Newshour with Jim Lehrer that after Tora Bora Al Queda was practically extinguished. Our invasion of Iraq has given them new life. I TIVO’s the show, and can repeat what he said word for word.
The invasion of Iraq, a war based on lies has damaged our country in ways we will not be able to recover from.

100,000 Ex-Felons Gain Right To Vote In Tennessee – In Time For November Elections
On September 5, 2006 at the Clarksville – Montgomery County Board of

Sure, pal. You assert something without offering a shred of support beyond your ignorant opinion, then claim that because no one “refuted” your claim that it should stand as fact. You know, after kindergarten that’s not how it works in the real world. You have to have some facts on your side and to be able to convincingly make a case for your claims. We KNOW you have ignorant and bigoted opinions; it’s up to you to convince us that you have something more. So far it’s been pretty slim pickings.

Janet S at 36: “Didn’t the FEC agree with McGavick about the millionaire clause? If so, how does that make it a McGavick lie? I guess if you just write huge paragraphs, no one will spend the time to call you on the details.”
I’m glad you brought up that issue. First of all, just because McGavick can convince the FEC of a lie, doesn’t mean I have to accept it. Can you name one time McGavick has even mentioned his Repubolican primary oppponants, other than to the FEC? He’s clearly not running against them. And why aren’t his Republican Opponants trying to invoke the Millionaire’s Amendment so their individual donar limits are raised? Well, it could be because their donars wouldn’t give any more money anyway, but its more likely that they aren’t real challengers. None of them have had a single bad thing to say about McGavick. They are just in it for the show.
I noticed that shortly after the pending FEC decision was leaked, McGavick pulled out the strongest anti-Cantwell ads and hit the air with them. Remember Nixon’s press secretary, Ron Ziegler, who made famous the claim that positions could be “operative” at one time, and not at other times? That seems to be symptomatic of McGavick’s positions.
McGavick wants the rules to apply to Cantwell, but not to him. He wants to get 28.4 million in corporate contributions (err “bonus”) for his campaign, but want’s Cantwell’s donars limited to individuals contributing not more than $2,200 each (I forget the actual number, its something like that). He’s willing to lie to the FEC about who he is really campaigning against to gain the advantage. Maybe the FEC swallows that lie, but I sure don’t have to, and neither do the voters of Washington State.

Ok, on to the posts.
Americafirst. Let me try being even more clear. I don’t know whether a large Muslim influx will eventually be good for the country.
Still, we can look at history for some idea. Even with all the cries of doom and gloom back when we were getting a bunch of Catholic immigrants, and many folks were saying that they would destroy our country, they’ve done well and become good citizens.
Every one of my great-grandparents or great-great-grandparents were immigrants from that wave. Without that influx, we would not be having that conversation, as my ancestors would have stayed in Italy and Ireland. Go back into your history books and look at the protests against Catholic immigration. You will note that they sound very familiar.
Now, if I had the perspective of an Iroquois, my answer might well be different. If all of your ancestors are pure-blood members of one of the Native American (I hate that term) tribes, you are welcome to disagree about the benefits of immigration.
I have no reason to believe it will be different for Muslims, so I would lean towards “yes”, but regardless of that, I think that violating the First Amendment would be very bad for this country. Seems to me that makes further discussion moot.
Clear enough?
Daddy Love spews:

(Funny thing about her, though: she’s the only CIA agent that was on the cover of Vanity Fair in a Jag convertible. Oh well…)
I stated before that the traditional media is biased. This is just another example.

On Labor Day some friends of mine joined us for a barbeque at my house. The weather was nice, the food was good (if I say so myself), and the company was great.
But my friend took me aside, and pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket, and asked me to look at it. It was one of those notices from the IRS, saying that taxes were owed, and he had a limited amount of time to contest the determination or pay the taxes.
At first I thought it was the usual stuff the IRS brings up. You know, somebody made a math mistake on their tax return, or they forgot to include some income which came to the IRS attention when a miscellanious income report was filed with the IRS.
But this was completely different. It said that because his employer had not paid his withholding tax to the IRS, the IRS was revoking his tax refund for 2004.
Now, for those familiar with the system as I have worked with it for the past twenty years or so, it works like this. The employer deducts the employment taxes from the employee’s paycheck. The employer then becomes the “trustee” of the money for the government, and is obligated to pay all 941 taxes to the government on schedule. If they fail to do so, the government takes quick action to collect the money, including shutting down the business to avoid incuring additional liabilities, and seizing and selling the assets to cover the debt. If the employer is a corporation, the IRS will issue a “100% Responsible Officer Penalty” against all the officers of the corporation, often including the bookeeper and anyone having signature authority on the payroll checks, which in effect “pierces the corporate veil” and makes it in everyone’s interest to pay off the IRS 941 taxes as soon as possible.
Except in the case of a closely held corporation, the IRS is in no position to know whether the taxes which were deducted from his wages were actually paid to the IRS. Only the IRS, and the employer itself, is in a position to know that.
So this is very new to me. Has there been some change in IRS regulations recently which allow the IRS to collect 941 taxes from the employee????? Is this how Bush plans to help balance the budget – by reducing the IRS enforcement budget, and taking the employer’s IRS debt out of employee paychecks instead????

CRESSY: Joe, it’s amazing, based on what I’ve seen so far is how much they’ve gotten wrong. They got the small stuff wrong such as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed instructing Ahmed Rassam to carry out the millenium attacks. Then they got the big stuff wrong, this fantasy about how we had a CIA officer and the Northern Alliance leader Ahmed Massoud looking at Bin Laden and they breathlessly call the White House to say we need to take him out and the White House said no. I mean it’s sheer fantasy. So, if they want to critique the Clinton administration and the Bush administration, based on fact, I think that’s fine. But what ABC has done here is something straight out of Disney and fantasyland. It’s factually wrong. And that’s shameful.
SCARBOROUGH: But at the same time, doesn’t history show that Bill Clinton had several opportunities to go after bin Laden, but the President and his cabinet were afraid to do so because they may offend some people in the Arab world?
CRESSY: Actually, Joe, that had nothing to do with it. If you read the 9/11 Commission report, it makes it very clear. In most of those cases, George Tenet, the Director of the CIA, said because there was single source intelligence it was his recommendation to the President not to take the shot. There was never a case where we had a clear shot at Bin Laden and the decision to take it wasn’t made.

From Amazon.com
Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Robert “Buzz” Patterson was a military aide to President Clinton from May 1996 to May 1998 and one of five individuals entrusted with carrying the “nuclear football”—the bag containing the codes for launching nuclear weapons. This responsibility meant that he spent a considerable amount of time next to the president, giving him a unique perspective on the Clinton administration. Though he arrived at the job “filled with professional devotion and commitment to serve,” he left believing that Clinton had “sown a whirlwind of destruction upon the integrity of our government, endangered our national security, and done enormous harm to the American military in which I served.”
Dereliction of Duty is not a personal attack on President Clinton or a commentary on his various scandals; rather, it is a “frank indictment of his obvious—to an eyewitness—failure to lead our country with responsibility and honor.” Lt. Col. Patterson offers a damning list of anecdotes and charges against the President, including how Clinton lost the nuclear codes and shrugged it off; how he stalled and lost the opportunity to launch a direct strike on Osama bin Laden at a confirmed location; how the President and the First Lady, and much of their staff, consistently treated members of the military with disrespect and disdain; and how Clinton groped a female Air Force enlisted member while aboard Air Force One, among other incidents large and small. A considerable portion of this slim book is devoted to the myriad ways in which President Clinton undermined the military, and hence the security, of the nation. He seriously questions Clinton’s decisions to send troops to Somalia, Rwanda, Haiti, and Bosnia to accomplish non-military tasks without clear objectives. Having participated in each of these engagements, Lt. Col. Patterson personally “experienced the frustration of needlessly wasted lives, effort, and national prestige” as well as the alarmingly low morale that Clinton inspired.
This is certainly not the first anti-Clinton book, but it is different in that Patterson does not seem to have a political ax to grind. In fact, at times, he appears apologetic about having to write about his ex-commander in chief. Yet, in the end, this retired soldier felt his last act of service should be to share his experience with his country. –Shawn Carkonen

From Publishers Weekly
No man is a hero to his valet-or his personal military aide, to judge by this memoir of the Clinton White House by a retired Air Force colonel who carried Clinton’s “nuclear football” and had intimate access to the President from morning jog to evening card game. Although Patterson claims to have no political agenda and to personally like the man, he revisits all the familiar touchstones of conservative Clinton-hatred (he also suggests that the former president bears some responsibility for the events of 9/11). In Patterson’s account, Clinton emerges as a careless, disingenuous frat boy, mercilessly hen-pecked by the domineering Hillary, whose tirades leave him looking like a “beaten puppy.” He presides over a chaotic administration focused on spin and fund-raising; he fondles an Air Force One stewardess and ogles Patterson’s wife in the Oval Office; he loses the nuclear launch codes; and he cheats at golf-which Patterson views as “not just a peccadillo but symptomatic of the way he approached life.” Patterson also asserts that Clinton “directly and severely harmed this nation’s security.” Clinton debilitated the military, Patterson claims, by downsizing it, trying to remove the ban on homosexuals and put women in combat roles, “gutting morale” with pay freezes and “rudderless” peace-keeping missions, and turning it into an “armed social services agency.” Worst of all, Clinton was soft on terrorism and missed a chance to get bin Laden with cruise missiles. Patterson raises important issues, but he seems most often affronted by what he sees as Clinton’s belief that he “was privileged to conduct himself at a much lower code of conduct than the men or women he would repeatedly order into harm’s way.” There’s a case to be made for Clinton’s laxness on security matters, but Patterson’s rendition is too anecdotal and brief, as well as too disgruntled – offended, even – to convince many.
Enjoy wingnuts.

I sympathize with your friend’s bad luck of having an employer that is not forwarding txes witheld from your friend’s check. This is another example of the mean-spirtied agency created by the support of Progressives (and I don’t mean the people who call themselves “progressive” on this blog)and other Socialists of about 100 years ago.
Enactment of a progressive income tax was the single biggest blow to individual liberty, primarily because of what resulted from creation of the IRS. When income taxes were enacted, the federal government got first lien on workers’ paychecks. If one gets unlucky enough to have to go to tax (i.e., “kangaroo”) court, he or she is automatically guilty. The tax court, you see, is a “special court,” just as evil as anything the most foul totalitarian dictator could think up.
The reason your friend got whacked in his paycheck is that the IRS doesn’t care where the money comes from, they just grab it from whatever source is most convenient. If his employer didn’t send in the $$$, the IRS reasons that it’s still the “taxpayer’s responsibility” to make sure the government gets first dibs on his our her paycheck.
The only way to restore personal freedom is to do away with income taxes in favor of a national sales tax instead.

We probably disagree about more than just national sales tax versus income taxes, sgmmac. Income taxes is just one of my hot-buttonissues. I’d like to do away with the IRS because it represents an intrusive and abusive government.
What I like abou the national sales tax idea is that the “taxpayer” is essentially invisible. Tax is paid at the point of sale, and the taxpayer is anonymoust to the feds. No forms to fill-out in April, to record keeping for individuals – it’s a great idea for those who wish to diminish the power of the federal government.

“Today’s Investors Business Daily had a good piece (page A-12)about how Karl Rove was falsely convicted in the media about having “outed” Valerie Plame. The New York Times actually pretty much apologized when it was found that Richard Armitage, not Rove, was the guy responsible for outing Ms. Plame.”
Richard Armitage called someone and told them about covert agent Valerie WILSON. There is still an open question as to who leaked the name under which she performed her covert ops.
“(Funny thing about her, though: she’s the only CIA agent that was on the cover of Vanity Fair in a Jag convertible. Oh well…)”
Valeri Plame’s LIFE was not secret; it was her status as a covert operative that was. She was, for example, openly married to Joseph Wilson (thus the cover). Duh. It was her work in the CIA’s Counterproliferation Division running the the Joint Task Force on Iraq investigating Iraqi WMD that was covert. Where have you been?
“Karl Rove may be a son-of-a-bitch, but he’s not a son-of-a-bitch for outing Valerie Plame. Richard Armitage can claim title to that one.”
Karl Rove may very well be both, but it’s much more likely, if it happens, that he would be indicted for lying to federal investigators and obstructing justice than for revealing the identity of a covert operative. Not because he did or didn’t do it but because the statute is rarely used and has an extremely high bar.

Yesterday President Bush made a speech to the Military Officers Association in Washington D.C. The transcript can be found in the reading assignments.
One part of the speech is especially interesting. Bush was discussing some of the messages that our intelligence forces have found in captured Al Qaeda documents. Here’s a portion of Bush’s speech where he discusses a letter from Osama bin Laden to Taliban leader Mullah Omar.
Secondly, along with this campaign of terror, the enemy has a propaganda strategy. Osama bin Laden laid out this strategy in a letter to the Taliban leader, Mullah Omar, that coalition forces uncovered in Afghanistan in 2002. In it, bin Laden says that al Qaeda intends to “launch,” in his words, “a media campaign to create a wedge between the American people and their government.” This media campaign, bin Laden says, will send the American people a number of messages, including “that their government will bring them more losses in finances and casualties.” And he goes on to say that “they are being sacrificed to serve the big investors, especially the Jews.” Bin Laden says that by delivering these messages, al Qaeda “aims at creating pressure from the American people on the American government to stop their campaign against Afghanistan.”
So … a question. Are you living up to Osama’s expectations? If you’re a Democrat, or if you’re living in a tree house in Crawford, Texas, the answer is probably “yes.”
