Last September I said a lot of those same things.

In the end, the butt flashlights and aquarium cleaners remained on the shelf. Months of testing continued. And we got a safe vaccine. A bunch of them, actually.

But also a plea deal. I believe prosecutors requested 18. Federal probation office recommended 15.
This guy has a completely clean record, committed no violent acts, cooperated fully, expressed sincere remorse, and agreed to a plea. So I think it establishes a kind of baseline.
And it’s a signal to all the defense attorneys and judges in all the other cases. They are saying they believe 18 months is an appropriate sentence for a non-violent offender who cooperates. And they can live with 8 months for such a defendant if he/she pleads and that’s what the judge settles on.
