From yesterday’s Seattle Times:
Safeco plans to lay off or reassign at least 240 employees as part of a restructuring program meant to cut $75 million from the company’s annual expenses by the end of 2006.
Most of those employees will lose their jobs, spokesman Paul Hollie said. The nationwide cuts are across all departments and affect about 80 employees in the Puget Sound area, he said.
Hmm. Let’s see now. Safeco plans to lay off about 240 employees to save about $75 million annually. That’s a savings of about $312,500 per employee.
And yet, Safeco’s board renegotiated Mike?™ McGavick’s exit package — after he’d already announced his resignation — to give him a $28 million golden parachute.
How much is $28 million really worth to Safeco? Well apparently, that’s about equal to 90 jobs that otherwise wouldn’t have to be cut. Or to put it into starker perspective, the $2 million of McGavick’s “own money” that he’s already put into his campaign might have saved at least 6 Safeco employees their livelihood.
I’m just saying.

CHICAGO – Minister Louis Farrakhan said in a letter to followers this month that he is seriously ill, and he asked the Nation of Islam’s leaders to carry on in his absence to make sure the movement “will live long after I and we have gone.”
Farrakhan, 73, said he began suffering pain earlier this year similar to 1998, when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent surgery. He said doctors discovered an ulcer in his anal area during a visit to Cuba in March.
Since then, he has lost 35 pounds while battling “serious infection and inflammation,” Farrakhan said in a letter dated Sept. 11 and published in the Nation of Islam’s The Final Call newspaper

How many jobs (and shareholders’ wealth) are consumed by corporate CEO helping themselves to the cash on the balance sheet? The problem we’re facing with major corporations is that all these CEOs are scratching each other’s backs!
Here’s how it works: one CEO serves as a member of the board of directors of another company his buddy runs. The first CEO of Company A gets himself on the compensation committee of his buddy’s firm, Company B. Company A CEO makes sure his buddy gets a nice pay package, then makes sure that his buddy serves on Company A’s compensation committee. The Company B CEO now returns the favor by promoting a nice pay package for the Company A CEO.
Who’s getting the shaft? First, the shareholders. Second, the poor working stiffs. Third, the economy that loses the goods and services not produced due to the lay-offs and the reduced wealth of the shareholders which stiffles further growth in the economy.
This trick has been repeated quite often over the past few decades. The only way to truly stop it is for the shareholders to get off their butts and throw these bums out!

Here’s a thought. Perhaps Mike! was doing such a “good” job at Safeco that they felt it was worth $28 million just to get rid of him. Could it be that he did such a crummy job at Safeco that the first round of “restructuring” (that he originally said would not be needed) just wasn’t enough to cut the losses he caused?
Maybe he wasn’t willing to leave any other way.
Just a thought.

By Yara Bayoumy
BEIRUT (Reuters) – Hizbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Friday rejected international calls to disarm his Lebanese guerrillas and told a huge “victory” rally they still had more than 20,000 rockets after a month of war with Israel.
Speaking to a sea of followers at a “divine victory” rally in south Beirut, Nasrallah said Hizbollah had emerged stronger from a conflict in which Israel declared it had destroyed most of the Shi’ite Muslim group’s arsenal.
“The resistance today, pay attention…has more than 20,000 rockets,” he told hundreds of thousands of cheering supporters in his first public appearance since the war broke out in July.
“(It) has recovered all its organizational and military capabilities…it is stronger than it was before July 12.”
Nasrallah warned the reinforced United Nations peacekeepers who are deploying in southern Lebanon as Israeli forces withdraw not to seek confrontation with Hizbollah.
“Your mission is not to spy on Hizbollah or to disarm the resistance,” he told a crowd packed into the Shi’ite Muslim suburbs which were heavily bombed in the 34-day war.
“…There is no army in the world that can (force us) to drop our weapons from our hands, from our grip,” he declared.
Nasrallah’s estimate of Hizbollah’s retained arsenal is five times greater than the total number it fired into Israel during the war, and higher than any previous figure he has given.

“The President of the United States owes this country an apology.
It will not be offered, of course.
He does not realize its necessity.
There are now none around him who would tell him or could.
The last of them, it appears, was the very man whose letter provoked the President into the conduct, for which the apology is essential.
An apology is this President’s only hope of regaining the slightest measure of confidence, of what has been, for nearly two years, a clear majority of his people.
Not “confidence” in his policies nor in his designs nor even in something as narrowly focused as which vision of torture shall prevail — his, or that of the man who has sent him into apoplexy, Colin Powell.
In a larger sense, the President needs to regain our confidence, that he has some basic understanding of what this country represents — of what it must maintain if we are to defeat not only terrorists, but if we are also to defeat what is ever more increasingly apparent, as an attempt to re-define the way we live here, and what we mean, when we say the word “freedom.”
Because it is evident now that, if not its architect, this President intends to be the contractor, for this narrowing of the definition of freedom.
The President revealed this last Friday, as he fairly spat through his teeth, words of unrestrained fury directed at the man who was once the very symbol of his administration, who was once an ambassador from this administration to its critics, as he had once been an ambassador from the military to its critics.
The former Secretary of State, Mr. Powell, had written, simply and candidly and without anger, that “the world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism.”
This President’s response included not merely what is apparently the Presidential equivalent of threatening to hold one’s breath, but within it contained one particularly chilling phrase.
“Mr. President, former Secretary of State Colin Powell says the world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism,” he was asked by a reporter. “If a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former secretary of state feels this way, don’t you think that Americans and the rest of the world are beginning to wonder whether you’re following a flawed strategy?”
“If there’s any comparison between the compassion and decency of the American people and the terrorist tactics of extremists, it’s flawed logic,†Bush said. “It’s just — I simply can’t accept that. It’s unacceptable to think that there’s any kind of comparison between the behavior of the United States of America and the action of Islamic extremists who kill innocent women and children to achieve an objective.
This moron who is the president says this, while at the very same time asking for permission to torture so the “good” men of our military won’t have the “fear” of prosecution hanging over their heads.

How is it in never-never-happy-land ManofStupidityandKolaid?
The unions are stifling PROGRESS in American manufacturing by virtue of the fact they demand high pay for menial jobs where mechanization would be cheaper and more efficient.
Take a trip to Europe or Asia. Head on over to Italy, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Finland, Seoul, Malasia and take a tour of a Coke Bottling Plant, Magnavox, Whirlpool, any car manufacturer.
They have all implemeted automated material handling systems and dock to trailer sytems with efficiency that is astounding.
We presented a dock to trailer system to Ford, to Phillip Morris and to Anheuser Busch. It was a specific in-house system for transportation back and forth between plants of the same company and it has been in use in Europe for years.
Currently, a driver backs up to the dock, parks the truck and goes to sit in the ‘drivers room’ for hours while UNION forklift operators meander back and forth loading and unloading, arranging and rearranging.
We presented a system in which the driver backs in, docks to the warehouse flips a button and his load in unloaded in under 7 minutes. He never gets out of the cab. The money saved in driver man hours, in transportation turnover, in forklift man hours is astounding. The money saved not having to write off “acceptable loss” is astronomical.
We presented an adjunct to the system for movement of goods WITHIN the warehouse.
But Ford, Phillip Morris, Anheuser Busch and others are held at gunpoint to pay the pathetically inefficient, slow and far overpaid union fork lift operators. When we were presenting to Anheuser Busch we were warned NOT to tell the union folks why we were there because they would file a grievance just because the company was considering time saving technology.
And now you know why OUR manufactures are producing overseas.
And now you know why manufacturers here like Dana Corp are going bankrupt with the failings of American car manufacturers.
And now you know why it’s cheaper for major companies to move their mid-management employees and families to productive careers in overseas plants.
Sadly, you will continue to trumpet the glories of the unions holding manufacturers hostage.
You will continue to pay more and more for the few union jobs that may end up staying here.
You will pay more for the materials and finished goods criss-crossing oceans.
You will pay more for the establishment of those factories in other countries and the movement of employees to manage them.
You will pay more for the taxes those companies pay TO those countries.
And you will pay more for the loss of taxes to our own.
But go right ahead.
In the technology of manufacturing, in the technology of material handling, they are leaving the USA in the dust.
But, I love travelling to Malasia, Korea, Finland, most of Europe, so carry on defending the protection racket.

Interesting P-I editorial for Sunday, September 24, 2006, as “Anon” points out:
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/.....voted.html
384 words? I wonder if the Seattle Lost-Intelligencer will consider allowing me equal space in next SUNDAY’s paper to respond to their attack? Making rabid political attacks, such as the Seattle P-I editorial board has done, is free speech. Allowing equal space for opposing viewpoints is journalistic integrity and professionalism.
(I say SUNDAY, because hardly anyone in east King County reads the Lost-Intelligencer any more. On Sunday, they have a three page P-I section published as part of the Seattle Times. They have obviously chosen Sunday, in the hopes that someone on the Eastside might actually read their blurb. And any sort of response from me would only be valuable on a Sunday as well.)
The Seattle P-I totally minimizes Mary Ann Ottinger’s severe discipline and unfitness for the bench. Ottinger has been censured twice by the state Commission on Judicial Conduct, on June 18, 2004 and May 5, 2006. And on July 20, 2006, Ottinger was suspended from office without pay — the most severe form of discipline which can be imposed on a judge, short of removal from office and disqualification from ever holding further judicial office.
Yes, I have made some mistakes during the 15 years that I have practiced law. Almost lawyers have. On a few occasions, I have paid monetary sanctions to the other side to compensate them for the harm caused by mistakes. On other sanctions, opposing lawyers have paid monetary sanctions to me to compensate for the harm their mistakes have caused for my clients.
However, I have NEVER been disciplined by the Washington State Bar Association or the state Commission on Judicial Conduct. Very few lawyers or judges have ANY sort of disciplinary record at all, much less an extremely serious disciplinary record like Ottinger does.
The Seattle P-I points out that the “King County Bar Association” has rated myself as “Not Qualified” for this position. But the Seattle P-I completely fails to mention that Ottinger — who has served on the bench for over 14 years — is ALSO rated as “Not Qualified” by the KCBA. I have never served as a judge. I hope to become a good judge after I take office in January 2007. But if someone has served as a judge for over 14 years, and still is “Not Qualified”, then they have SERIOUS PROBLEMS and will NEVER be the least bit “Qualified”.
By the way, the KCBA should not be confused with the Washington State Bar Association. The WSBA is the mandatory membership licensing organization and a state agency. The KCBA is a private organization. No one is required to join the KCBA, and less than 30% of the attorneys in King County have chosen to join the KCBA.
I can understand why the Lost-Intelligencer editorial board failed to mention that Ottinger had been suspended from office by the Washington Supreme Court, and didn’t realize that CENSURE in itself is a severe disciplinary sanction (one step below suspension).
The reason why is that the Lost-Intelligencer has never had any of its reporters ever cover any story regarding Ottinger’s sordid disciplinary history, or the harm which she has caused by denying poor criminal defendants their right to an attorney. Once or twice, the Seattle P-I published an abbreviated AP wire version of a story that had run in the Seattle Times on the previous day. And they totally ignored her first censure on June 18, 2004 when it came out, as well as totally missing her July 20, 2006 suspension from office by the Washington Supreme Court.
I don’t think any of these PREVIOUS reporting deficiencies was due to any political bias in favor of Ottinger by the P-I. Probably they didn’t even know who she was at the time. As I said before, most Eastside news stories are not of much interest to the Lost-Intelligencer, since very few of their readers live on the Eastside.

President Clinton rips Chris Wallace a new one in an interview: A complete transcript can be found here. Wingers are stupid. Trying to take on a polished, off the cuff speaker, as President Clinton is, was just suicide on Mr. Wallace’s part. Idiot, Got his ass handed to him.

Fox News Sunday, Interview With President Bill Clinton, 9/22/06 (Rough Transcript)
WALLACE: In a recent issue of the New Yorker you say you’re sixty years old and you’re worried about how many lives you can save…Is that what drives you in your effort to help?
CLINTON: Yes. That sounds sort of morbid. The tone in which I said was almost whimsical and humorous. This is what I love to do it’s what I think I should do. I’ve had a wonderful. I got to be president. I’ve lived the life of my dreams. I dodged a bullet with that health thing. I think I owe it to my fellow countrymen and people around the world to help save lives and help people see the future. But as it happens I love it. I feel it’s a great gift. I feel it’s a rewarding way to spend my life.
WALLACE: Someone asked you …he asked you if you could do more good as a former president than as a president and you said only if I live a long time.
CLINTON: Yea that’s true.
WALLACE: how do you compare the powers of being in office and what you can do out of office?
CLINTON: When you’re president you can operate on broader scope. You can simultaneously work to stop the genocide in Kosovo, bring peace to the middle east, pass a budget that gives millions of kids a chance to have after school programs… So in other words you’ve got a lot of different moving parts and you can move them all at once.
But you’re also more at the mercy of events. That is 43 did not run for President to deal with the events of 9/11 but once it happened it wasn’t as if he had an option. Once I looked at the economic data after I won the election, I realized I would have to work harder to reduce the deficit and therefore have less money in my first year to invest in things I wanted to invest in.
WALLACE: So what is it that you can do as a former president.
CLINTON: So what you can do as a former president, you don’t have as wide a range of powers so you have to concentrate on fewer things. But you are less at the mercy of …events. If I say look we’re going to work on economic empowerment of poor people, on fighting aids and other diseases, on trying to bridge the religious and political differences between people and on trying to avoid the worst calamities of climate change and try to revitalize the economy in the process, I can actually do that. Because tomorrow when I get up and there’s a bad headline in the papers, it’s President Bush’s responsibility and not mine. That’s the joy of being a former potus. And it is true that if you live long enough and have discipline in the way you do it — like this CGI — you might be able to effect as many lives as you did when president.
WALLACE: When we announced that you were going to be on fox news Sunday, I got a lot of email from viewers, and I got to say I was surprised most of them wanted me to ask you this question. Why didn’t you do more to put Bin Laden and al Qaeda out of business when you were President. There’s a new book out which I suspect you’ve read called the Looming Tower. And it talks about how the fact that when you pulled troops out of Somalia in 1993, Bin Laden said I have seen the frailty and the weakness and the cowardice of US troops. Then there was the bombing of the embassies in Africa and the attack on the USS Cole.
CLINTON: OK..
WALLACE: …may I just finish the question sir. And after the attack, the book says, Bin Laden separated his leaders because he expected an attack and there was no response. I understand that hindsight is 20 20.
CLINTON: No let’s talk about…
WALLACE: …but the question is why didn’t you do more, connect the dots and put them out of business?
CLINTON: OK, let’s talk about it. I will answer all of those things on the merits but I want to talk about the context of which this…arises. I’m being asked this on the FOX network…ABC just had a right wing conservative on the Path to 9/11 falsely claim that it was based on the 911 commission report with three things asserted against me that are directly contradicted by the 9/11 commission report. I think it’s very interesting that all the conservative Republicans who now say that I didn’t do enough, claimed that I was obsessed with Bin Laden. All of President Bush’s neocons claimed that I was too obsessed with finding Bin Laden when they didn’t have a single meeting about Bin Laden for the nine months after I left office. All the right wingers who now say that I didn’t do enough said that I did too much. Same people.
They were all trying to get me to withdraw from Somalia in 1993 the next day after we were involved in black hawk down and I refused to do it and stayed 6 months and had an orderly transfer to the UN.
Ok, now let’s look at all the criticisms: Black hawk down, Somalia. There is not a living soul in the world who thought that Bin laden had anything to do with black hawk down or was paying any attention to it or even knew al Qaeda was a growing concern in October of 1993.
WALLACE: …I understand…
CLINTON: No wait…no wait…Don’t tell me. You asked me why I didn’t do more to Bin Laden. There was not a living soul…all the people who criticized me wanted to leave the next day. You brought this up so you get an answer.
WALLACE: I’m perfectly happy to. Bin Laden says…
CLINTON: And secondly…
WALLACE: Bin Laden says…
CLINTON: Bin laden may have said that…
WALLACE: Bin Laden says it showed the weakness of the US…
CLINTON: It would have shown the weakness if we left right away but he wasn’t involved in that. That’s just a bunch of bull. That was about Mohammed Adid, a Muslim war lord murdering..thousands of Pakistani Muslim troops. We were all there on a humanitarian mission. We had not one mission — none — to establish a certain kind of Somali government or to keep anybody out. He was not a religious fanatic.
WALLACE: But Mr. President…
CLINTON: There was no Al Qaeda…
WALLACE: …with respect if I may. Instead of going through 93.
CLINTON: You asked you. It you brought it up.
WALLACE: May I ask a general question that you can answer. The 9/11 Commission, which you talk about, and this is what they did say, not what ABC pretended they said…
CLINTON: Wait, Wait…
WALLACE: …they said about you and 43 and I quote, “The US government took the threat seriously, not in the sense of mustering anything like that would be….to confront an enemy of the first, second or third rankâ€
CLINTON: That’s not true with us and Bin Laden…
WALLACE: …the 9/11 commission says…
CLINTON: Let’s look at what Richard Clarke says. You think Richard Clarke has a vigorous attitude about Bin Laden?
WALLACE: Yes I do
CLINTON: You do?
WALLACE: I think he has a variety of opinions and loyalties but yes.
CLINTON: He has a variety of opinion and loyalties now but let’s look at the facts. He worked for Ronald Regan. He was loyal to him. He worked for George Herbert Walker Bush and he was loyal to him. He worked for me and he was loyal to me. He worked for President Bush; he was loyal to him. They downgraded him and the terrorist operation. Now, look what he said, read his book and read his factual assertions — not opinions, assertions. He said we took vigorous action after the African embassies. We probably nearly got Bin Laden.
WALLACE: …
CLINTON: Now wait a minute…
WALLACE: ..cruise missiles..
CLINTON: I authorized the CIA to get groups together to try to kill him. The CIA was run by George Tenet who President Bush gave the medal of freedom to and said he did a good job.. The country never had a comprehensive anti terror operation until I came to office. If you can criticize me for one thing, you can criticize me for this, after the Cole I had battle plans drawn to go into Afghanistan, overthrow the Taliban, and launch a full scale attack search for Bin Laden. But we needed baseing rights in Uzbekistan which we got after 9/11. The CIA and the FBI refused to certify that Bin Laden was responsible while I was there. They refused to certify. So that meant I would have had to send a few hundred special forces in helicopters and refuel at night. Even the 9/11 Commission didn’t do that. Now the 9/11 Commission was a political document too. All I’m asking is if anybody wants to say I didn’t do enough, you read Richard Clarke’s book.
WALLACE: Do you think you did enough sir?
CLINTON: No, because I didn’t get him
WALLACE: Right…
CLINTON: But at least I tried. That’s the difference in me and some, including all the right wingers who are attacking me now. They ridiculed me for trying. They had eight months to try and they didn’t….. I tired. So I tried and failed. When I failed I left a comprehensive anti-terror strategy and the best guy in the country, Dick Clarke… So you did FOX’s bidding on this show. You did you nice little conservative hit job on me. But what I want to know..
WALLACE: Now wait a minute sir…
CLINTON:..
WALLACE: I asked a question. You don’t think that’s a legitimate question?
CLINTON: It was a perfectly legitimate question but I want to know how many people in the Bush administration you asked this question of. I want to know how many people in the Bush administration you asked why didn’t you do anything about the Cole. I want to know how many you asked why did you fire Dick Clarke. I want to know…
WALLACE: We asked..
CLINTON:..
WALLACE: Do you ever watch Fox News Sunday sir?
CLINTON: I don’t believe you ask them that.
WALLACE: We ask plenty of questions of…
CLINTON: You didn’t ask that did you? Tell the truth
WALLACE: About the USS Cole?
CLINTON: tell the truth.
WALLACE: I…with Iraq and Afghanistan there’s plenty of stuff to ask.
CLINTON: Did you ever ask that? You set this meeting up because you were going to get a lot of criticism from your viewers because Rupert Murdoch is going to get a lot of criticism from your viewers for supporting my work on Climate Change. And you came here under false pretenses and said that you’d spend half the time talking about…
WALLACE: [laughs]
CLINTON: You said you’d spend half the time talking about what we did out there to raise $7 billion dollars plus over three days from 215 different commitments. And you don’t care.
WALLACE: But President Clinton…
CLINTON:
WALLACE: We were going to ask half the question about it. I didn’t think this was going to set you off on such a tear .
CLINTON: It set me off on such a tear because you didn’t formulate it in an honest way and you people ask me questions you don’t ask the other side.
WALLACE: Sir that is not true…
CLINTON: …and Richard Clarke…
WALLACE: That is not true…
CLINTON: Richard Clarke made it clear in his testimony…
WALLACE: Would you like to talk about the Clinton Global Initiative?
CLINTON: No I want to finish this.
WALLACE: Alright
CLINTON: All I’m saying is you falsely accuse me of giving aid and comfort to Bin Laden because of what happened in Somalia. No one knew al Qaeda existed then…
WALLACE: Did they know in 1996 when he declared war on the US? Did no one know in 1998…
CLINTON: Absolutely they did
WALLACE: When they bombed the two embassies…
CLINTON:…
WALLACE: Or in 2000 when they hit the Cole.
CLINTON: What did I do? I worked hard to try and kill him. I authorized a finding for the CIA to kill him. We contracted with people to kill him. I got closer to killing him than anybody has gotten since. And if I were still president we’d have more than 20,000 troops there trying to kill him. Now I never criticized President Bush and I don’t think this is useful. But you know we do have a government that think Afghanistan is 1/7 as important as Iraq. And you ask me about terror and Al Qaeda with that sort of dismissive theme when all you have to do is read Richard Clarke’s book to look at what we did in a comprehensive systematic way to try to protect the country against terror. And you’ve got that little smirk on your face. It looks like you’re so clever…
WALLACE: [Laughs]
CLINTON: I had responsibility for trying to protect this country. I tried and I failed to get bin laden. I regret it but I did try. And I did everything I thought I responsibly could. The entire military was against sending special forces in to Afghanistan and refueling by helicopter and no one thought we could do it otherwise…We could not get the CIA and the FBI to certify that Al Qaeda was responsible while I was President. Until I left office. And yet I get asked about this all the time and they had three times as much time to get him as I did and no one ever asks them about this. I think that’s strange.

You’re not entitled to your job. Get over it.

Yeah but I back up my talk. Take this for example:
Was the Jew killer a conservative or liberal. In the Seattle Times we have the following quote:
Haq’s friend said he couldn’t believe the timid, “geeky” man he knew from the tutoring center was capable of such violence.
“Are you sure we’re talking about the same person?” he said Sunday………….
He said Haq was not a devout Muslim and often complained that the Tri-Cities were too politically conservative.
“I’m beginning to think I was his only friend in the Tri-Cities. I don’t recall him hanging out with anybody else.”
Now for the other side we turn to Darryl’s story on HA July 30, 2006:
Psssssssssstttttttt…….
Ah it looks like the story was all a bunch of hot air. Well there you have it. Enjoy all you Nazi Libs.

Dickey shows exactly why he shouldn’t be a judge in his rant above. Come on, do you really want idiots sitting on the bench who call the newspaper the “Lost Intelligencer?” I mean is that REALLY the kind of petty, childish, immature person you want making decisions about life and death?
And Dickey’s argument, is so pitiful. “Vote for me because while I certainly am a total fuck up, I am less of a fuck up than the other guy.”
How absolutely disgraceful is that?
And Dickey they let you off easy. They only mentioned TEN of your ill-fated attempts to suck on the government tit for your daily bread. I have uncovered at least 14 times that you’ve been bitch-slapped by the voters and told HELL NO!
Richard Pope spews:
Calling the financially bankrupt smaller local daily paper the “Lost-Intelligencer” isn’t nearly as bad of an insult against them as their editorial in this Sunday’s daily is an unjustified insult against myself. And it is an accurate description of their hack editorial board. Come November 2010, I will be seeking re-election to another term on the King County District Court, while the folded Lost-Intelligencer will be a distant memory, and Mary Ann Ottinger will be enjoying her fourth year of retirement (and sixth year of residence) at her 23 acre Methow Valley estate in Okanogan County.

Yes and it’s unlikely that if he somehow cons his way onto the bench in the first place, that Dickey will still be a judge in 2010. Judging by his passive – aggressive behavior here, he may be in a mental institution. Of course, he probably belongs there!

Are you like George Allen; if someone mentions that you have a Jewish heritage that is casting “aspersions” upon you?
Libertarian spews:
It remains to be seen if Mullaly will “save” Ford. He is being paid up-front for a job to be accomplished.
In the 80’s Lee Iaccoca “saved” Chrysler. He took $1.00 per year in salary and options of Chrysler stock that eventually became an $8 million paycheck. (Not a lot by today’s standards for CEO pay.) He wasn’t “paid” until the job was done.
Oh sure, he got a government-guaranteed loan to help the company survive and turn-around its fate. The loan was paid back early and and money for the government, by the way. My point is that Iaccoca did the job, then was paid. Mullaly appears to be getting paid before the job is done. Where’s his incentive?
ArtFart spews:
Both the P-I and Ford are probably beyond salvation.
It would appear Mullaly’s being paid up-front for doing what Bill Ford no doubt didn’t have the stomach for–selling off the remaining viable assets to post a few years of black ink. This will pump the stock price up long enough for the big shareholders to bail out. Oh, there’ll probably be something sold after that with the Ford name on it, built by someone else. Lada, maybe?
What I’m wondering is now that the King County Journal is up for sale, what exactly are the eastsiders going to read? Maybe they’ll just watch Faux News.
Jim King spews:
Goldie- both you and your readers need to work on reading comprehension. When Safeco says lay-offs and transfers as part of a $75 million restructuring, that is NOT saying “We lay off these employees and save $75 million”- it is saying we are going to do some things, inclding lay-offs and transfers, that in total save $75 million.
So to begin with, you can’t divide the total number of employees referenced into $75 million and get a savings per employee number.
Secondly- you can’t compare a one-time expense- McGavick’s package- to an ongoing expense. You couldn’t keep whatever number of jobs for whatever number of dollars- you could, at best, keep those jobs for a short period of time.
Then that money is GONE.
Now, Goldie, I know you have never run a business, much less had employees. Nor have most of your commentators. But to keep employees employed, you need to have the revenue coming in to cover the costs.
Safeco badly overextendeed itself with its overexpansion in the ’90’s. It continues to cut back to a model that has some hope of surviving into the future. That is a reality of business.
But go work on your reading comprehension first- you would really have trouble with the WASL if this posting is an example…
RightEqualsStupid spews:
So Jim Queen is trying to defend the insurance industry lobbiest wouldbe Senator by saying that Safeco made mistakes in the 90s. I guess that puts Mikey in the clear?
After all, during Mikey’s time as CEO wasn’t it his job to fix all these problems? And if Safeco is in trouble and Mikey couldn’t fix that, why should we trust him to be a part of the Senate?
Maybe while Goldy is working on comprehension you can work on debate Queeny? Based on this last lame post of yours, you have a long way to go.
Libertarian spews:
Maybe they’ll just watch Faux News.

Mike? McGavick’s theme song for America:
“Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?”
By E. Y. Harburg & J. Gorney
They used to tell me I was building a dream
And so I followed the mob.
When there was earth to plow or guns to bear
I was always there — right on the job.
They used to tell me I was building a dream
With peace and glory ahead.
Why should I be standing in line
Just waiting for bread?
Once I built a railroad, made it run,
Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad — now it’s done.
Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once I built a tower to the sun,
Brick and rivet and lime.
Once I built a tower — now it’s done.
Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once in khaki suits — gee, we looked swell,
Full of that Yankee-doodle-dom.
Half a million boots went slogging through hell
And I was the kid with the drum!
Say, don’t you remember? They called me Al,
It was Al all the time.
Say, don’t you remember? I’m your pal.
Buddy, can you spare a dime?

“Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries,” lyrics by Lew Brown, music by Ray Henderson (1931)
People are queer, they’re always crowing, scrambling and rushing about;
Why don’t they stop someday, address themselves this way?
Why are we here? Where are we going? It’s time that we found out.
We’re not here to stay; we’re on a short holiday.
Life is just a bowl of cherries.
Don’t take it serious; it’s too mysterious.
You work, you save, you worry so,
But you can’t take your dough when you go, go, go.
So keep repeating it’s the berries,
The strongest oak must fall,
The sweet things in life, to you were just loaned
So how can you lose what you’ve never owned?
Life is just a bowl of cherries,
So live and laugh at it all.
Life is just a bowl of cherries.
Don’t take it serious; it’s too mysterious.
At eight each morning I have got a date,
To take my plunge ’round the Empire State.
You’ll admit it’s not the berries,
In a building that’s so tall;
There’s a guy in the show, the girls love to kiss;
Get thousands a week just for crooning like this:
Life is just a bowl of . . . aw, nuts!
So live and laugh at it all!
“We’re in the Money,” lyrics by Al Dubin, music by Harry Warren (from the film Gold Diggers of 1933, 1933)
We’re in the money, we’re in the money;
We’ve got a lot of what it takes to get along!
We’re in the money, that sky is sunny,
Old Man Depression you are through, you done us wrong.
We never see a headline about breadlines today.
And when we see the landlord we can look that guy right in the eye
We’re in the money, come on, my honey,
Let’s lend it, spend it, send it rolling along!
Oh, yes we’re in the money, you bet we’re in the money,
We’ve got a lot of what it takes to get along!
Let’s go we’re in the money, Look up the skies are sunny,

– Announcing a plan to reduce annual expenses by $100 million, including consolidating regional offices from 13 to five locations, and reducing employment by 10 percent through 2003.
No, if they’re cutting employment drastically to save more millions it has nothing to do with “overexpansion in the 1990s,” which they already took care of, unless Mike! was not competent. No, it sounds a LOT like some RECENT financial events are the driver for this. Hmmmm, what large financial outlays has Safeco had recently?

Spy Agencies Say Iraq War Worsens Terrorism Threat” -NY Times/a>
The American invasion and occupation of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks, says the new National Intelligence Estimate. Completed in April, it is the first formal appraisal of global terrorism by United States intelligence agencies since the Iraq war began, and represents a consensus view of the 16 disparate spy services inside government. Titled “Trends in Global Terrorism: Implications for the United States,” it asserts that Islamic radicalism, rather than being in retreat, has metastasized and spread across the globe. An opening section of the report, “Indicators of the Spread of the Global Jihadist Movement,” cites the Iraq war as a reason for the diffusion of jihad ideology. The report “says that the Iraq war has made the overall terrorism problem worse,” said one American intelligence official.
More than a dozen United States government officials and outside experts were interviewed for this article, and all spoke only on condition of anonymity because they were discussing a classified intelligence document. The officials included employees of several government agencies, and both supporters and critics of the Bush administration. All of those interviewed had either seen the final version of the document or participated in the creation of earlier drafts. These officials discussed some of the document’s general conclusions but not details, which remain highly classified.
Miserable.
Failure.

This is still the same George Bush that made a mess out of the federal Katrina response, the same George Bush that went into Iraq with NO plan for the aftermath, the same George Bush whose economic policies have benefitted the rich more than regular people and the same George Bush who let Bin Laden get away at Tora Bora by diverting attention and troops to Iraq. This is not an impressive track record, and it shows in Bush’s job approval, stuck forever below 50%.
The idea that Bush is making the War on Terra worse by INCREASING terrorism should come as no surprise to anyone. We are not only less prosperous than we were five years ago, Bush’s policies are making us less safe, less respected, and less successful on the world stage. He’s breaking the Army and straining the national guard. And no election year PR blitz is going to to keep reality from the American people.

This looks likes backing down to me. First you are civil, agree to meet. (with me agreeing to meet at a place of your choice. You would think that I would be concerned) then you start with the attacks again. I read that as playing me and then backing out.
I will be at Danny’s.5′2″, Shorts, Hawaiian, flip-flops, yellow Corona hat. Nice big target for you.

Actually GWB flew the F-102. The F-102 and F-104 were both interceptors, but the F-104 was probably the more dangerous plane to fly. It has very short, stubby wings, and it had to be going pretty fast to even stay in the air. It was known as The Widow-Maker because a lot of guys bought the farm in it.
