It’s my understanding that he was speaking about what is going to happen when the philosophy of the “new” Testament was set to replace the obsolete one in the Torah.
I’m not a religious person by any means. The whole, “Dead God on a Stick” is a little too homo-sadoerotic for me, but the basic concepts are relatively sound. Unfortunately, nobody seems to know what that is supposed to be. The current brand of Christianity seems to be more about the stick rather than the carrot. The bigger the stick, and the greater acceptance of what the purpose of it is, seems to be more about just extorting the rubes and making the “leaders” wealthy and politically powerful.
In other words, “Give me your money, and I’ll make sure I pray for your everlasting soul. but if you DON’T give me your money, I’ll make sure you burn in the fires of Hell for all eternity.”

It could be taken several ways. In that, you cannot be worthy if you put your own family’s life or well-being above that of blind obedience to him. Most “christians” seem to take this as meaning that blind obedience is really the core of the belief system, and that everything else that comes into play, including and especially philosophical differentiation between the perception of meaning in the words themselves, is somehow evil and dangerous. This is one of the reasons why “christians” for the most part, actively discourage questioning that belief system too deeply or at all. This is why they oppose general system of secular public education. Such a system doesn’t offer answers so much as it leads to uncomfortable questions.
This happens in several forms. My parents have a good friend that ran to Canada after he got his draft notice in 1967, and he took the amnesty that Jimmy Carter was able to get through Congress back in ’78. His father, who had been through North Africa and Sicily with Patton’s Army, and received his final Purple Heart about a week after the invasion of Normandy, never forgave him for “shirking his duty” and he apparently hasn’t spoken to his family since the day before he left.
So, “Jesus” really was just another narcissist who probably wasn’t all that different in his personality than Jim Jones or Rick Warren.

The real problem is that we apply the same level of aptitude to losing shit too. The TeaBagger/Fascist types were really good at finding out how to convince people that a Republican form of Government is too corrupt to leave its maintenance to mere people. Their “Churches” were and are a major aspect of that. Now, they’re losing their minds when people tell them that they would rather have an actual say in how things are run, rather than leave all the decisions to organizations that have no responsibility to anyone but themselves. Corporations and “Churches” with a motive to maximize their own influence outside of a limited cultural paradigm, are not a good alternative. They end up always being the greater harm.
