Considering the fact that this “Christ” person isn’t around to tell me what to do all the time, I’ll follow my own councils, thank you. I don’t need some moralizing asshole telling me what to think.
What is he, an absentee boss who only comes through the shop once every few weeks to bitch about the mess on the floor and yell at people for performing actions that he has no clue as to their purpose?
Fuck that guy.

Ima Duncespews:
That pretty much sums up the definition of a cult.

I thought it was “surprise and fear” (and a fanatical devotion to the Pope).

Coupla thoughts…
First, this isn’t Jesus talking, it’s Paul, whose thoughts combined with Roman authoritarianism make up a lot of what most people think of as “Christianity”.
Second, this wouldn’t be the only instance in which something that started out as something more like “respect”, “obey” or “hold in awe” came through the many layers of translation as “fear”. What Paul was probably trying to say was that whatever you are in God’s universe, master or slave (or “boss” and “employee” in these times”), you should be the best at it as you can. Jesus didn’t promote social revolution (as many had expected). He simply said “love one another” which in and of itself was probably far more revolutionary.

@6 You have no proof Jesus said any such thing or anything else for that matter. I reject the bible as fantasy and delusion. You can believe whatever. And for a religion mostly stolen from eastern religions, it was and is the most murderous cult in history. So stop with the love each other bull.

Mark Adamsspews:
@1 How very Roman of you. They tended to think this way of the Christians. Though anything to keep uppity slaves in line could be useful.
9
Mark Adamsspews:
@7 Well Paul never actually met Jesus, still there is that whole New Testament and a lot of it is written by Paul and is the foundation of Christianity a quaint little cult at this time that Paul really got off the ground. It’s rather amazing this little cult became the Church of Rome (and Istanbul) and has billions of followers and has real power in the world. At least we know what this Paul guy said to some degree although no original have survived, and some passages have been corrupted from the original. Maybe Russia has the e-mails, letters, ect of Paul and should like release them. Putin just happened to come acoss these things in a monastery. And pieces of the true cross, nails, and this really cool sword. And cups and a knight. All brought to you by the same folks who gave the world Hitlers diaries. Yep totally credible if the President of Russia who follows the true religion these days of the Russian Orthodox Church will show us the way. Fun times to be had by all!

Of course the passage is also one of many that the word Servant has been automatically changed to slave in many other versions. No matter how interchangeable not all Servants are slaves.
Not to mention the passage sets up separation of church and state. That Christians are separate from the state in some ways. Still they should pay their taxes, follow reasonable rules, use the baths, follow a judges order, ect. Something some Christians here in the US have a problem with. Something that Turks will be struggling with as the President of Turkey works to bring about the Caliphate with him as Supreme Sultan.

@2 And your a member of the bar? Isn’t justice your mater or your siren?
I’m enjoying reading John Grisham’s “Rogue Lawyer” not sure it’s about a furry fellow like you but I’m reading the chapter now about our Warrior Police, that we are in a police state. Perhaps as Hemingway inferred fiction can be more effective than just news to show truth.

@9 Could’ve been worse. At least Paul wasn’t an L. Ron Hubbard lackey like Tom Cruise.
13
ArtFartspews:
@12 Right. Now, as to the guy who wrote the Book of Revelation, I’m not so sure…
Then again, after watching one’s pals turned by Nero into tiki torches, I’m not sure any of us wouldn’t become somewhat unhinged.
14
Ima Duncespews:
@13 And as soon as Christians took power in Rome they set about torturing and killing everybody else. So much for turning the other cheek.
15
Mark Adamsspews:
@12 Of course not, but he would have played the same role as L Ron Hubbard. Of course he is more of a messianic Jew than Gentile Christian. The Roman’s may have found Scientology amusing and adopted it as they did other religions.
@13 The persecution of messianic Jews during Nero’s reign is probably an exaggeration. Nero didn’t place blame on any group, as fires in Rome were not unusual. He may have punished Christians, but no more than the other troublemakers in the city such as Chariot drivers and actors.
