Genesis 6:1-4
And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

    Did the giants get to ride on Noah’s Chris Craft, which would be launched later in Ch. 6?

    How is this any different from Zeus coming down from on high and knocking up Leda?

    or, according the the Catholics:

    They were the heroes of old, the men of renown.

    Is this any different from sagas about the Numenoreans, or the men of Westernesse? Now, granted, Tolkien was likely influenced by the fantasy that is the Bible – but that’s the point – we’re dealing with a collection of myths and legends and the creation stories of a nomadic, Bronze Age, Middle Eastern tribe.

    That this compendium of tales has gained currency as the inerrant WORD OF GOD(tm), and that a substantial number of people believe that is should be a quite literal set of laws for a modern culture, is the most fantastical thing about it.

    Again according to the Catholics:

    The text, apparently alluding to an old legend, shares a common ancient view that the heavenly world was populated by a multitude of beings, some of whom were wicked and rebellious. It is incorporated here, not only in order to account for the prehistoric giants, whom the Israelites called the Nephilim, but also to introduce the story of the flood with a moral orientation—the constantly increasing wickedness of humanity.

    …the belief was common that human beings of gigantic stature once lived on earth. In some cultures, such heroes could make positive contributions, but the Bible generally regards them in a negative light (cf. Nm 13:33; Ez 32:27). The point here is that even these heroes, filled with vitality from their semi-divine origin…

    If these tales of giants and semi-divine beings are acknowledged to be old myths, what are they doing being subsumed into the inerrent WORD OF GOD ™? Doesn’t that undermine the whole notion of divine inspiration? Did GOD! ™ write this tome or not?

    Rachel Beckwith’s last charity campaign is drawing to a close. There are now only five days remaining. The selfless birthday wish of a pretty little girl with a flower in her hair has so far raised over $1,255,000 to bring much needed clean water to other boys and girl’s.

    Please take one last look at that kid. She is hope and change made real. I say that there as much, perhaps more, to be learned from the selfless birthday wish of nine year-old Rachel Beckwith than there is in all the words spoken by today’s failed political leaders. Maybe even more than in all the words of Genesis.

    I’ll pray that there’s a heaven if for no other reason than that Rachel Beckwith might know that her birthday wish came true.

    The only things you know I write, are posts here. These you should believe, but that choice I leave to you.

    The only truths that exist are those that lie behind what science finds. All else you must judge.

    That said, nothing in the Torah is like what I write here. Nowhere does it say that >>I<< wrote the Torah or even that it is My truth. The Torah is said to be what Moses wrote on My instructions. It never says I do not deceive men.

    Look harder, LS, at the text cited by Hanavee Goldy. Moses says there once but two humans, one with a penis and one with a vagina. Science says your species could not have arisen from only two genomes. Even if these were perfect, no recessive lethal genes, such genomes would not survive when they met new challenges. Science says there must have been others … and so there were.

    Adam and Eve were Jews.

    How do you suppose Adam and Eve, two Yidden, felt, growing up in a Yiddishe ghetto when they met folks from Kenya?

    I do not remember lots of tall Jewish basketball players.

    Yep, Giants!

    But do note, the Torah does not say “Black.” Seems as if it means Adam and Eve were black, just as modern genetics tell us!

    So, you white folks, where in Hell did YOU come from????? or … maybe I just guessed the answer????

    Since none of the Bible thumpers like Puddy “what will you do when Jeeaaasus comes on his Clowds of Gloooreee” bud, come here anymore, it’s just not that fun. Too bad we chased them all away.

    Perhaps it’s time to end this weekly post Goldie and go all the way to complete retirement.
