Zephaniah 1:14-18
The great day of the LORD is coming soon, very soon. On that terrible day, fearsome shouts of warriors will be heard everywhere. It will be a time of anger–of trouble and torment, of disaster and destruction, of darkness and despair, of storm clouds and shadows, of trumpet calls and battle cries gainst fortified cities and mighty fortresses. The LORD warns everyone who has sinned against him, “I’ll strike you blind! Then your blood and your insides will gush out like vomit. Not even your silver or gold can save you on that day when I, the LORD, am angry. My anger will flare up like a furious fire scorching the earth and everyone on it.”

I guess this means we cant be late on the rent. Markets tight these days.
That, or it’s performance review time again…
@1: You might want to be worried if you lived ~700 BCE. Otherwise, no big whoop.
Note while included in the Christian OT, Zephaniah and the other “minor prophets” aren’t included in the Tanakh (Jewish bible). I suspect the Christians included the book as a “loop closer” for stuff in the NT, like Revelations.
@Lib Sci, Rujax!, Proud To Be An Ass:
Queen Anne, Hilltop Ale House, 5 pm today.
@4
Excellent – can’t wait!
Sadly HA Navii Goldy has taken this passage from a very poor translation, for those who do not read Aramaic, read on in your language:
GW Bush, President of the USA, annuncing invasion of Iraq.
I am that I am.
Wasn’t Marvin Luther King Jr. a Christian Minister?
Sounds like God is going to go nuclear on all our asses.
@6 God
Did you mean that he said he is the DE-ICER? It explains all the flames and such anyway.
@God: Appreciate the correlation but Zephaniah was written in Greek about 700 BCE. It is not recognized by the Jewish faith.
Now, I expect SJ will be by shortly to correct the silly gentile (;-).
This is some Bible study group we have here. Goldy’s apparent aversion to the words of Jesus reminds me of wingnuts and how they avoid them too.
With thoughts of young Christina Taylor Green,
Matthew 19:14 (New King James Version)
14 But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
@7 “Marvin Luther King Jr.”
As I recall, Marvin was a musician.
Rich people, take note, God seems especially not amused.
@7: I guess I don’t feel so bad now having misspelled Noam Chomsky.
Here’s a interesting comment from the Holy Land’s favorite newspaper.

Btw Goldy, do you think God will hold off so that it makes the 5 p.m. news hour? If it bleeds it leads ya know. Can we get a press release a couple of days in advance? Mel Brooks might be available to write one up.
@10: Zephaniah is indeed recognized by the Jewish faith.
@16: I stand corrected.
I misunderstood what I was reading. The Tanakh includes it as “Trei-Asar / Twelve Prophets”.

sighh
NO form of Judaism considers anything but the Torah (5 books) as the word of the Deity.
For reasons utterly obscure to us, and certainly without the imprimatur of any deity, including Jesus, Christians have assembled a collection of pamphlets, writings, and other scraps as the word of their Deity.
One thing that really perplexes me is why supposed fundamentalists reject the au8htority of the Roman (and Greek) ca Church, yet accept the official Roman decision as to what IS the word of God.
I am not sure what HA God, would have to say about this, but perhaps if you were to beseech her/him/it, we could learn the Truth?
Oh wait, God has already spoken above and revealed that this passage was the word of a prophet, the Prophuet Bush.
@16 Correction
Sorry, no. Jews have a lot of history, but no Jew considers this a part of the Jewish revelation.
If we took your stand, then the latest words on Netanyahu of the Sephardi Rabbi would also be part of our “faith.”
Troll alert: “Sj” above @18, 19 is an impostor.
SJ, If I gave the impression that I was saying that Zephaniah is taken as the word of God by Jews, that was not my intent… I probably should have been more specific, I was only pointing out that Zephaniah is in the Tanakh.
@21: It’s not SJ (Steve Schwartz) and apparently not the “God” we know and love either.
The links go to fundamentalist christian trash.
@18;
I’ve wondered that about the supposed fundamentalists too, then I remembered that they use the King James version – so their sloppy thinking must go “Well, King James accepted that the Roman Catholic Bible was a bible, so it must have been.”

Correction
As for Zotz and his concern about links, links can serve many purposes, be not misguided ..
As of God, isn’t He,it, She everywhere? even on fundie religious sites?
Don’t take the Christian Bible or any other writings from the Middle East too seriously. Remember that Christianity got a major break when a Pagan Roman emperor (Constantine) thought it politically expedient to let the Christians practice openly and freely in the Roman Empire. Constantine never gave up his Pagan beliefs, yet he got to oversee what was included and what was excluded in the Christian Bible. OK, so there’s Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, but what about the gospels of Thomas, Philip or Mary Magdalene? Turns out they weren’t to Constantine’s liking, so they were left out of the Bible.
All religions are valid, and all religions are packs of lies. None are to be taken too seriously.
That’s going to leave a mark.
Atlantis
The continent of Atlantis was an island
which lay before the great flood
in the area we now call the Atlantic Ocean.
So great an area of land, that from her western shores
those beautiful sailors journeyed
to the South and the North Americas with ease,
in their ships with painted sails.
To the East Africa was a neighbor, across a short strait of sea miles.
The great Egyptian age is but a remnant of The Atlantian culture.
The antediluvian kings colonized the world
All the Gods who play in the mythological dramas
In all legends from all lands were from fair Atlantis.
Knowing her fate, Atlantis sent out ships to all corners of the Earth.
On board were the Twelve:
The poet, the physician, the farmer, the scientist,
The magician and the other so-called Gods of our legends.
Though Gods they were –
And as the elders of our time choose to remain blind
Let us rejoice and let us sing and dance and ring in the new
Hail Atlantis!
From the book of Donovan

Yawn; church, eyelids are heavy.
S & M permeated the culture…punish me…punish me….save me…save me
I think we need a Bible written by Mel Brooks.
@30 I think he has already done that job.
@27: Hail Atlantis!
Love your screen name.
There is a cultural war in America between Christians and Atheists. This war is being fought on the battlefield of politics. The battles are in the voting booth. The prize in the cultural war is the hearts, minds and souls of the children. The Atheistic liberal news media greatly influences both domestic and foreign policy by constantly reporting only bad news about Christians, Conservatives and Republicans and only good news about atheists, liberals and democrats. The agenda of the Atheistic liberal news media is to promote evolution, extreme environmentalism, socialism, feminism, pornography, abortion, adultery, homosexuality and the Atheistic Lifestyle by having democrats in control of government.
The Socialism needed to sustain Atheism is preventing an economic recovery in America.
The Church should rebuke sin/evil in obedience to God, and the State should rebuke/execute evil/sin for health, safety and economic reasons.
