Language is speech and symbol. The symbols can be preserved as pictures ,,, hieroglyphs or modern Chinese, but Hebrew, the first language to have a form where the sounds were written down is the only one of these first human languages still spoken today.

Edward Snowden, whom the U.S. government desperately wants to get its hands on, apparently has left Moscow for Ecuador, where he hopes to gain asylum. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is wanted — apparently not quite so desperately — by Sweden is holed up in the Ecuadoran embassy in London. It seems Ecuador is becoming a refuge of sorts for leakers who piss off overbearing governments. Snowden, of course, shouldn’t have done what he did, but on the other hand, the U.S. government shouldn’t have charged him with espionage — that’s a stupid, ridiculous, unwarranted charge. And one should remember this guy was not a CIA or NSA employee; he was a private contractor, and so we must ask, whose stupid idea was it to contract out CIA and NSA intelligence work to the friggin’ private sector? Umm, guess … another legacy of the dumbest administration in American history.
I wonder if Obama will send Navy jets to intercept Snowden’s flight to Ecuador, like Reagan did to grab the murderers who hijacked a cruise ship and threw a wheelchair-bound American tourist who happened to be a Jew overboard? (Snowden just isn’t the same class of criminal as those guys. Sorry, boys, he’s just not.) I worry about Obama. He looks more rightwing with every passing day. And the stoopid teapotters think he’s a socialist? That would be funny if it wasn’t so pathetically idiotic.

“A 5-year-old girl in New Orleans died Sunday after … she accidentally shot herself in the head. … Officers … found the girl in a bedroom, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. … ‘A preliminary investigation indicates the child was home alone and had somehow come into contact with a .38 revolver and accidentally shot herself in the head,’ police said in their statement.”
A 5-year-old girl in New Orleans died Sunday after, police believe, she accidentally shot herself in the head.
The case will be reviewed by the district attorney’s office and charges may be forthcoming, the New Orleans Police Department said in a statement.
Earlier, they had said that the girl’s mother faced a charge of second-degree murder.
Officers responded to a report of a child shot late Sunday morning. They found the girl in a bedroom, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. She was transferred to a hospital but later died from her injury.
“A preliminary investigation indicates the child was home alone and had somehow come into contact with a .38 revolver and accidentally shot herself in the head,” police said in their statement.

I know a social worker who told me once that the best guess social workers and psychologists in the field of intervention type family work have on that, is that about a third of such fatal accidents are not accidents at all, and is really the parent just eliminating a problem. It’s just that nobody can ever prove it. An awful lot of those cases seem to be in families with at least one violent parent.
That being said, anyone who leaves a five-year-old at home alone is an asshole. Anyone that leaves a five-year-old at home alone with a loaded gun in the house is a ignorant piece of shit who should never be allowed to possess a weapon of any sort, at any time.

Today’s SCOTUS Rulings
The biggest cases — DOMA, Voting Rights Act — won’t be announced today. Possible tomorrow or Wednesday.
Today’s most significant opinion is the University of Texas race-based admissions case. USA Today reports,
“The Supreme Court on Monday said colleges’ affirmative action plans are constitutional only if such racial preferences are the only way to achieve diversity on campuses, a decision likely to subject such programs to far more scrutiny in the future.
“The 7-1 decision was written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, [who is] considered the crucial swing vote on the court, particularly on issues involving race.
“Kennedy said the University of Texas at Austin’s affirmative action plan could withstand constitutional scrutiny only if the university could prove that ‘no workable race-neutral alternatives would produce the educational benefits of diversity.'”
So, SCOTUS refused to strike down race-based admissions altogether, but tightened the criteria for allowing their use to achieve racial diversity in the student body. This leaves standing the prior case law on affirmative action in college admissions, but subjects affirmative action plans to stricter judicial scrutiny.
SCOTUS also upheld a federal law requiring sex offenders to register in their state of residence.
