A man from the Tillamook-area who was accidentally shot over the weekend when his dog jumped into a boat and set off his gun is recovering.
Matthew Marcum was shot with his 12-gauge shotgun Saturday on the Tillamook Bay. His legs and buttocks were injured in the incident and he was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center in Portland.
His father, Henry Marcum, says the 23-year-old Marcum was about to tie up an 11-foot open aluminum boat, when his 3-year-old Labrador, Drake, jumped into the boat.
Matthew Marcum says his dog, Drake, is a good dog and he isn’t upset with him.
Huh. So I guess owning a dog doesn’t keep you safer than owning a gun, that is, if your dog has a gun.

The Tacoma paper had the dad in the dog shoots man story as saying “it’s just one of those things that happens.” Or something to that affect. To my way of thinking your kid getting shot is a bit more serious than that and “it happens” because someone left a shell in the guns chamber and had the safety off.
They should loose their hunting licensees for a year or two for being dumb with a gun.

I had a couple of friends who went hunting a few years back. They both know guns and gun safety well, but when they got back in the truck to drive home, someone left one in the chamber. When they put the gun in the car, muzzle-down, it went off.
The bullet went through the transmission, disabling the truck and spilling transmission fluid onto the ground, and the transmission fluid caught on fire – apparantly the result of a combination of a hot bullet, transmission fluid, and dry pine needles and other natural debris on the car. So now they have a truck with a disabled transmission which can’t be moved (they can’t even shift it into neutral to push it), a fire under the truck, all their equipment and guns in it, and they are desperately trying to get the fire put out before it catches the car on fire. They suceed, but then they have to walk several miles to find a phone to call for a friend to bring another 4-wheel drive to tow out their car.
Fortunately, nobody was hurt, the truck could be repaired, and they could laugh about it. They guy who left the round in the chamber still turns red with embarrassment every time the story is told.

I know a guy who also blew a hole in his truck leaving one in the chamber. He was a big gun safety advocate too. Thankful no one was hit. Gun Safety is a full-time avocation for sure.

(1) He should have had the weapon completely unloaded, and checked to make sure no rounds were in the chamber;
AND
(1) he should have the safety on. The safety should ALWAYS be on, except for the few seconds it takes to aim and pull the trigger. Relying only on a safety being on is dumb, there are as many ways to accidently disengage the safety as there are ways for the trigger to be accidently pulled, or the weapon to discharge on it’s own if it’s bumped just right.
Remember, you ALWAYS treat a weapon as if it is loaded. You don’t assume it’s unloaded, just because you think you checked it five minutes ago. You still assume it’s loaded, and check it again, and then you STILL assume that it’s loaded.

I have had it happen with a firearm malfunction. Fortunately (not luckily, but fortunately) the gun was pointed downrange when it fired. Gun safety has its place.
I have see others have ADs also. Fightening.
I have also had a gun go full auto (fire multiple rounds) due to a malfunction.
