Gregoire hits Rossi on minimum wage

by Goldy — Sunday, 9/28/08, 8:37 pm

As Josh reported from Thursday’s gubernatorial debate, Dino Rossi voiced support for repealing Washington’s highest in the nation minimum wage (currently $8.05 an hour), tied to inflation by a citizen’s initiative.  Rossi told the Association of Washington Businesses:

”The minimum wage was not meant to be a family wage. It’s meant to be an entry level wage.”

Rarely during this campaign has Rossi made the mistake of publicly stating his position on an issue on which he is so out of step with voters.  Don’t get me wrong, Rossi is way out of step on a number of issues, he just refuses to talk about them, and so far our press has been mostly complicit in his silence.  But this time he spoke loud and clear, and one would think that reporters might follow up.

It’s encouraging to see the Gregoire campaign quickly respond with an ad; I just hope they continue to hit him on the minimum wage.  And harder.

I wish Gregoire would hammer his lying Indian casino ads — and explain to voters what that deal is all about: Preventing Indian gambling from expanding to 10 times its current size.

That was a great deal for Washington citizens, and she should say so, loudly and often. Rossi’s ads blatantly accuse her of taking a $650,000 bribe from the Indians, and as false and shrill as that is, she can’t let it go unanswered.

The truth about why the tribes support Democrats (not just Gregoire) is because our state’s Republicans are racist goatfuckers, and the Native Americans think it’s wrong to treat goats that way.

    Yet Another Palin Scandal!

One pol who does take bribes is Governor Stickeefingers:

“Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin … has accepted gifts valued at $25,367 from industry executives, municipalities and a cultural center whose board includes officials from some of the largest mining interests in the state, a review of state records shows.”

(Quoted from Associated Press under fair use.)

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Last month ago, Palin helped mining interests defeat a referendum that would have imposed tougher regulations on a gigantic proposed mining development that threatens the world’s most important salmon fishery. Well, with all those gifts from mining interests, you don’t expect her to protect a sustainable food resource, would you? Let ’em eat molybdenum!

So, is the minimum wage meant to be something you can support a family on? Is it not an entry level wage?

The most important thing a minimum wage does is (hopefully) show kids that getting an education and a real job beats the hell out of working at the minimum wage lever for 40 years. Raising or lowering it really doesn’t affect much. We could raise it to $100 an hour, and there’d still be people struggling.

Because most of us have day jobs but feel strongly enough about some issues that we support solutions with our time.

Rossi should reconsider his stance on the minimum wage.

Many might get the impression that he is a cheap, stingy, mean-spirited gop.

Many of the signs in my neighborhood proclaim ‘Rossi gop’. Is that some kind of new cleaning product being touted by Billy Mays?

@15 If he reconsiders and assumes a wide stance and starts tapping his toe then, well, we certainly won’t be seeing him as being only cheap, stingy and mean-spirited.

Rossi thinks $8.05 is a family wage, and McCain thinks below $5 million is middle class.

The view’s a little different from the bottom.

The health insurance for my family of four costs over $16,000 per year, or about $7.75 per hour. Add in deductibles and co-pays, It costs above minimum wage to insure my family…

$8.05 is a family wage? WTF?
