The latest SurveyUSA poll shows a dramatic rise in Gov. Christine Gregoire’s approval ratings: 45% approve, 49% disapprove. That’s a huge improvement from the 38%-52% she polled shortly after Dino Rossi’s election contest was dismissed “with prejudice.”
It seems that the more voters get to know Gov. Gregoire, the more they like her… and the further we get away from the election contest, the less voters blame her for the controversy. Eleven governors now have worse approval differentials, including such GOP notables as CA Gov. Arnold Schwartzenegger and NY Gov. George Pataki. (And Gregoire polls a helluva lot better than of our failed President.)
I’m guessing Gov. Gregoire’s rising popularity might wipe some smugness off the faces of the Republican faithful who were counting on last year’s election controversy to sweep them into power.
She’s going to be 3 year lame duck. The People are going to shove her flagship legislation up her ass by 15 points.

It will be interesting to see what Gregoire’s poll numbers do AFTER the I-912 vote when folks start atteacking her lack of leadership, big tax-and-spender etc. No one is attacking her right now…but I’ll bet the do right after this election. Watch those numbers drop to significantly less than the I-912 results. There are a number of special interest businesses and the Unions who expect to gain dollars and power by I-912. However, the businesses will quickly desert Gregoire after this I-912 vote.

it shows that, but for an unmoveable right wing, washington state seems to have moved on. look at the crosstabs: she’s made big gains with women, voters in western washington and democrats.
my guess is that this has less to do with her leadership and more to do with bigger things on the brain — like Katrina, gas prices and the war.
while her rise is good news, she is still struggling with independents and suburbanites. and those folks are the key to her reelection.
thankfully, that’s 3 long years away. and these next three election (including the 05 and 07 locals) are an opportunity for the Replublicans’ to continue to sink and us the opportunity to continue to deliver.

Arnold is taking a stand and trying to shake things up in California. Given the high number of public employees and union members that he is up against, I’m not surprised that he is unpopular right now. But I always wonder if people tell pollsters what they think the pollster wants to hear, not what they really think. I suspect Arnold will come out of it okay, and California will be stronger.

I don’t see a 45% YES to 49% NO approval rating as all that impressive for Governor Gregoire. It has tightened up a bit since there haven’t been too many controversial decisions to make over the last few months. I think it will widen quite a bit when I-912 is approved in November.
One thing interesting is the lukewarm opinion of black voters in Washington towards Gregoire — right now it is 34% YES to 62% NO, which is downright hostile. The highest approval rating that black voters have ever given Gregoire was 53% YES to 42% NO in July. Not very good for a group that usually votes well over 80% Democrat.
If our state has any crises that develop in the next three years, I would expect Gregoire’s approval to plummet, since she won’t have the strength or courage to deal with them effectively. On the other hand, if there is a bunch of calm political weather ahead, Gregoire might be able to achieve a modest positive approval margin.

As for 3: “People in the rest of the state HATE Seattle,” speak for yourself. You realize, don’t you, that (for example) if I-912 passes the next step is allocating to each county only its own revenue dollars? Then King County will have a transportation system that is the envy of the nation, and the “rest” of the state will watch their roads crumble. I’m sure it will warm your heart.
