I got an email from Patty Murray’s campaign yesterday about this year’s Golden Tennis Shoes. And oh hey, Elizabeth Warren is speaking this year.
Every year, I host the Golden Tennis Shoe Awards to honor ordinary citizens who have done extraordinary things to help improve their communities and the lives of those around them.
I’m thrilled to announce that my friend, Senator Elizabeth Warren, is going to join us this year to keynote the Golden Tennis Shoe Awards and help me congratulate these amazing Washingtonians.
It’s interesting to see what Warren’s role is in the party as a relatively new Senator. When someone like her is headlining a big deal fundraiser like the Golden Tennis Shoes, it probably says something about the left flank of the Senate. You can say that sort of thing doesn’t play outside of Mass, but you know, she’s taking it on the road here, because she has a popular platform.

Yeah, you mean that thing about it not really being left at all.
Warren is a foreign policy hawk, that much I know. For instance, here is something re: Iran (2012): http://vastleft.blogspot.com.b.....idate.html

I remember the last time a Democratic senator, two years into a first term, was invited all the way across the country to headline an event for a local senator. That time the beneficiary was Maria Cantwell, and the new senator was this guy named Barack something.
I don’t think this says anything about the Democratic Party’s “left flank,” other than the obvious: Warren, like Obama before her, is a celebrity pol who can help generate a lot of money and excitement from the party faithful. Her colleagues are far more interested in her cachet and fundraising coattails (especially from individual donors – Chuck Schumer can raise money, too, but who’d come to hear him speak?) than in what her politics are.

Side note: “Golden Tennis Shoes” becomes more ironic every year. The “tennis shoes” label made Murray’s career, but she’s no housewife and hasn’t been for a long, long time. She’s one of the most powerful insiders in DC, but the people back home don’t so much notice due to the footwear schtick. But a list of her donors reads like a who’s who of corporate America, and has done so for three reelection campaigns dating back to 1998. If she ever retires she’ll have her pick of lobbying opportunities, just like so many other insider senators before her. Golden tennis shoes, indeed.

This shoe wasn’t quite golden

but it was described as orange in color, which is actually quite close.
Shoes do make excellent metaphors.

Kind of like Ron Woods’ eternal Small Faces hairdo.

Pork Barrel Patty. A triumph of gender-identity politics over progressive values. Can someone explain her utter lack of political courage considering her seat is so safe? Most of the time I’m unaware that she even exists. Another mystery is why Washington democrats seem to be satisfied with her. Even a joke candidate (hopefully with some satiric bite) as a primary challenger would be welcome to point out her transformation into a corporate shill. Boeing workers should keep in mind her photo op expressing concern about Boeing jobs staying in Washington as if she was simply a helpless bystander.
