hitler wasnt atheist or did you miss his making nice with the catholic church? nor could stalin truly be considered atheist… he was anti religion surely but that doesnt make him atheist. he essentially created a secular religion based around him and his particular form of communism. this is not to say that there arent bad people out there who are atheists, there more than likely are. what is important to note though is that a persons atheism has never been their central motivation for conducting evil or despicable actions. however, the same cannot be said for religion. have a nice day

Hitler’s religious beliefs are somewhat murky. Christians seem to delight in labeling Hitler as an atheist (Godwin anyone?), but the case is far from clear. Stalin as a Marxist was certainly an atheist, and I’m sure we can find instances of communist factions lobbing artillery at one another. These disputes, however, are more likely political and don’t have much to do with religion or lack thereof.
Then again one can argue that what’s been going on in Gaza these last few weeks has more to do with land and refugees than it has to do with religion. Historically Jews were particularly oppressed in the Islamic world, at least in comparison to their treatment in the Christian world. It was only when European Christians started meddling in the middle east that the whole Arab/Jewish conflict escalated into the confrontation that we see now.
Christianity and Islam seem to be united in the common belief that the planet isn’t big enough for the both of them.

Let’s review: George W. Bush wanted to fire federal meat inspectors and give taxpayer money to meatpacking companies to hire their own meat inspectors (who, of course, would answer to company managers).

A couple days ago, Bush bragged on national TV that he has protected us from terrorist attacks. Maybe, maybe not. This is murky. Bush’s years in office have been characterized by one tainted food scandal after another. And his FDA is so untrustworthy that I tell my veterinarian not to prescribe any medications for me that were approved after January 2001.

What we’re talking about here is an entire product line being recalled. So far, hundreds of people in 43 of the 50 states have been hospitalized by tainted peanut butter — this is nationwide. Every product in the country with peanut butter in it is being recalled! Heavily regulated, my ass. Nothing is regulated by this administration — nothing at all.

It seems to me that anti-semitism and, therefore the need to reestablish Israel, was pretty much endemic in both of the religions that inherited their traditions from Rome … Roman/Greek Catholicism and Islam. Even in the New World, until the US War of Independence, we were not given equal rights or were even burned to death in Hispanic lands.
The only places we have thrived, until now, have been in India, China and the USA. The first two markedly outside of the Roman Heritage and the last .. well another reason I am a proud American and NOT a Christian.

You are correct in identifying dogmatism a source of much of the world’s conflicts. I would not, however, try to say whether faith or lack of faith is what creates dogmatism, and which more consistently produces conflict. Both do equally. In the faith-based world, fundamentalism generates conflict more than any other species of faith, and it doesn’t matter whether that fundamentalism be Christian, Muslim, or Jewish. Certain folks want the world to end. They couch their desire in religious terms, but the bottom line is their motivations are either personal or political. Religion gets blamed too much for conflicts which are ideological first, ethnic second, and then maybe religious.

I think it’s indisputable that in recorded history numerous wars have been started and atrocities committed in the name (or on the pretext) of religion. You don’t find historical examples of atheism being used for this purpose. I think that was Jon’s point.
