You either have to be in a state to tell the hospital you don’t mind visitors or you have to have someone with the legal right to do so let the hospital know. Otherwise the hospital can’t even tell people you’ve been admitted much less what your room number is.
Now it is possible to set up paperwork such that your unmarried partner has the right to visit you and make medical decisions for you (just like a married partner could), but not everyone goes to the trouble and hospitals often ignore such paperwork.

Well we are living in a very new time now. At the moment, nearly all hospitals, medical and dental clinics, and other care/treatment centers are prohibiting many people from visiting patients and those being treated. If you are not an adult intimate relation with the patient, you are not going to be allowed a visit. This is due to the multiple problems associated with: MRSA, treatment-resistant TB, H1N1 and other flu strains, etc. Therefore, the issue of same-sex domestic partners is becoming much more important than it may have been a few years ago.

If you walk into Swedes or Northwest at 3:00 in the afternoon nobody’s very likely to hassle you, and if you know the approximate area of the hospital the person’s in (like if they broke a leg they’re probably on the orthopedic floor) you should be able to find them. When I visited my brother after he was injured a few days ago, I just walked into the lobby, told the receptionist I was his brother, and she directed me to his room without demanding any proof of who I was.
On the other hand, a few years back my Dad fell down the stairs and was taken to the Harborview ER at 11:00 on a Friday night, the armed security folks not only demanded multiple pieces of identification, but made me and my wife wait an hour and a half before assigning someone to escort us to where he was.
