Give Me Liberty, and Give Me Death!

by Goldy — Wednesday, 7/16/14, 5:02 pm

Some disturbing new statistics:

A report out on Tuesday from the Violence Policy Center confirms yet again the lunacy of America’s loose gun policies.

The report contains the striking finding that gun deaths exceeded motor vehicle deaths in 14 states and the District of Columbia in 2011, the latest year for which the relevant data are available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s up from 12 states in 2010 and 9 states in 2009.

The 2011 states are Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Washington State, as well as the District of Columbia.

According to the report, gun deaths exceeded motor vehicle deaths in Washington State, 624 to 554.

Clearly, the only possible solution is to make cars less safe. Because freedom!

Perfectly acceptable statistics. The Constitution requires everyone make certain sacrifices in the name of Liberty.

•The number of Americans killed from second-hand cigarette smoke each year exceeds the number dying from firearms.

•The total number of deaths attributed to smoking is more than 10 times greater than deaths related to firearms.

•About 30% of suicide victims have marijuana in their bloodstream.

•88,000 US deaths attributed to alcohol each year.

Something to keep in mind while smoking just outside the doorway at the next Drinking Liberally meet-up, after you’re done lamenting the empty shelves at the 420 stores.

@Goldy: In case someone hasn’t told you lately, thank you.

You should check out the SECB thread @ The Stranger. You’re getting some significant love — and not just from the usual suspects.

You’re one of the best political writers in the state — bar none. The Stranger just seems sort of “frivolous” without you now. I bet it’s one hell of a story…

I check out Slog still, but since Goldy’s departure, the only issue of the Stranger that I picked up was the one with the SIFF Notes. And I prefer to read the paper version.

70% of all suicides don’t have pot in their bloodstreams. So smoke pot and you’ll have a better chance.

I’m just really concerned. That’s all.

Meanwhile the Detroit Police Chief has an opposing view… http://bearingarms.com/detroit.....rop-crime/ What did he say?

“Criminals are getting the message that good Detroiters are armed and will use that weapon,” said Craig, who has repeatedly said he believes armed citizens deter crime. “I don’t want to take away from the good work our investigators are doing, but I think part of the drop in crime, and robberies in particular, is because criminals are thinking twice that citizens could be armed.

“I can’t say what specific percentage is caused by this, but there’s no question in my mind it has had an effect,” Craig said.

Craig made national news in January, when he told The Detroit News he believed armed citizens deter crime — an unusual stance for an urban police chief. In May, the chief was featured in an NRA publication, America’s 1st Freedom, in a cover story titled “A Show of Courage in Detroit,” in which Craig reiterated his support for citizens using guns to protect themselves.

Puddy delivers FACTS not conjecture! Yet all we hear from local and national DUMMOCRETINS are screams about gun violence. An armed society is a safe society. Still waiting for y’all to explain to Puddy how you gonna take the guns from this other Obummer voting bloc!

    Piddles delivers truthiness.

“I can’t say what specific percentage is caused by this, but there’s no question in my mind it has had an effect,” Craig said.

Anecdotes and assumptions are FACTS for Piddles. That’s why he’s a conservative.

Same article that I assume Piddles didn’t or just selectively read.

A 2013 study by the American Journal of Public Health found that the states with the loosest restrictions on gun ownership had the highest gun death rates.

June, Boy shot when someone uses a gun to try to stop a dog biting

July, 70 year old accidentally kills self while examining an acquaintance’s gun

All of these people were totally safer because someone nearby had a gun to deter crime or something.

@9: “STOCKTON, Calif. — Police want answers this morning from the only suspect to survive a bloody, chaotic shootout. A group of bank robbers took hostages Wednesday, then led officers on a 45-minute chase. This morning, two suspects and one hostage, who was a wife and mother, are dead. One witness told CBS Station KOVR he heard five minutes of non-stop gunfire. Corresponent Sean Bennett reports it almost seemed as though war had broken out in Stockton, with bullets ricocheting off the getaway car as police exchanged gunfire with three suspected bank robbers armed with AK-47-style rifles.”

But a new report commissioned by the White House titled Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-related Violence suggests what many self defense gun proponents have been saying for years. The report, ordered under one of President Obama’s 23 Executive Orders signed in the wake of the Sandy Hook incident, asked the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the National Research Council and other federal agencies to identify the “most pressing problems in firearms violence.”

To the surprise of the authors and those who would no doubt have used the report to further restrict access to personal defense firearms, the study found that gun ownership actually saves lives and those who have a firearm at their disposal improve their chances of survival and reduce their chance of injury in the event they are confronted by a violent criminal:

FACTS delivered unadulterated to leftist pinheads!

Of course checkmate delivers a couple of anecdotal stories!

Piddles has gone full crazy with an editorialized summary from a wing nut site. Piddles thinks he’s playing chess but all he brought was tiddlywinks disks.

The study you cite identified area of research that should be undertaken but didn’t do such research. Missed this:

Additionally, the lack of comprehensive datasets and the wide variety of sources and the fact that the data lead to contradictory conclusions call into question the reliability and validity of gun-violence data. Technological opportunities and recent advances that can enhance linkages among datasets from other federal, state, and local sources may enable better predictive analytics, real-time information sharing, and reduction of data noise.

Translation…we don’t know shit and we recommend you study some things CDC. Of course we know what happened. House republicans put fourth a bill outlawing the CDC from conducting said research and funding for same…ain’t happening.

As should be expected, the study doesn’t in any way say what Piddles claims. That’s the Piddles M.O. cite something, get it wrong.

The research agenda proposed in this report is intended as an initial—not a conclusive or all-encompassing—set of questions critical to developing the most effective policies to reduce the occurrence and impact of firearm-related violence in the United States. No single agency or research strategy can provide all the answers. This report focuses on the public health aspects of firearm violence; the committee expects that this research agenda will be integrated with research conducted from criminal justice and other perspectives to provide a much fuller knowledge base to underpin our nation’s approach to dealing with this very important set of societal issues.
