Lengthy depositions are obtained behind closed doors – they typically allow each committee member 30 to 60 minutes, so that a deeper level of questioning is possible.
The for-the-cameras “testimony” limits each committee member to five minutes, and half of that is used up by the congressperson playing for the cameras, and the other half is used up by the witness stonewalling the answers.
Give someone like, say, Ted Cruz or Trey Gowdy (when he was in office) 30-60 uninterrupted minutes with a witness and that witness will sustain serious damage. Give them only five minutes and it’s little more than rope-a-dope. I suspect giving Liz Warren 30-60 minutes would have the same result as Ted Cruz might get.

On January 16th of 2021, Brandon Fellows, 26 at the time, was arrested in Albany New York and subsequently charged with felony obstruction of an official proceeding, felony entering and remaining in a restricted building along with three related misdemeanor offenses for his role in joining a violent armed mob attacking Congress to prevent the electoral count of the 2020 presidential election. He was released pending trial and moved into a bus where he traveled from state to state and frequently posted to social media about his arrest and pending trial, often in voilation of his release conditions. On three occaisions the government argued for his re-arrest and confinement for various of these violations, which included mocking and threatening prosecutors, traveling across state lines without permission and without informing BOP pretrial release services. Upon issuing a threat of violence to a BOP officer supervising his pretrial release and then subsequently contacting in person that officer’s mother and visiting her in her home, he was finally taken into custody pending trial in June of 2021.
Following his own requests of the court his criminal trial in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia was delayed until August of 2023 at which time he was convicted on all counts. Mr. Fellows represented himself with assistance from a federal public defender and throughout his pretrial hearings and evaluations he acted disruptively and dismissively toward the court, court officers, baliffs, marshalls, federal prosecutors, and even his own counseld providing assistance. He engaged in frequent outbursts while witnesses were giving testimony, held up signs mocking the court, resisted treatment recommendations of his doctors, and at other times refused treatment.
Yesterday Mr. Fellows was sentenced to 37 months in prison for his original charges plus an additional five months on a charge of contempt of court.
