Last Open Thread, I mentioned some things that I didn’t like about taking the bus in Tacoma. But! Especially compared to Seattle, here are some things that are good about it, from my limited experience.
First, I haven’t had busses that show up on One Bus Away, but then not in real life.
I also never stopped for 10 minutes waiting for the drivers to switch.

“If” (and it is certainly a very huge “if”) the GOP can somehow rid itself of Trump through it’s mostly winner-take-all primary process, the question remains, how would that come about and what would the resulting nominee campaign look like?
The relative buoyancy of DeSantis and Ramaswamy give us some indication.
I guess “baggage” is relative. But once Trump goes away (assuming that he ever would 👌) then without Trump’s shocking and terrible record to compare, baggage is just baggage. And these are the two campaigns out of all of the nine with the most by far. Because in order for them to have stood out from the field they have chosen to take the more extreme positions and engage in the most extreme rhetoric. That means either of them would have farther to backtrack following a tough convention fight to heal their image with moderate, unaligned “independent” general election voters.
This means that for almost any conceivable “other-than-Trump” nominee, turnout is not their friend. While it is certainly a very good argument that Trump has the demonstrated ability to shift turnout to his advantage (given the right circumstances), a big GOTV outreach effort, even a well targeted one, has huge downsides for any other Republican nominee.
Unusually lopsided turnout is the key to Trump’s chances.

Does anybody sincerely believe that in any closely contested Republican nomination Trump would ever concede a primary loss or agree to suspend his campaign?
Some of the most historically uninvolved and yet stridently pro-Trump general election voters are found in blue states and battleground states. Any non-Trump nominee starts out in mid summer of 2024 with a huge disadvantage. There are going to be millions of ride-or-die Trumpers who simply will not come around without receiving a clear order from Trump.
Would Trump have a price for that? Maybe. But I rather doubt he’s going to trust any of them enough to trade his endorsement for some unsecured future promise of pardon, especially if he doesn’t think they can win. We know four of the nine would never make that deal. I think the chances are very good that without a very overwhelming victory for any non-Trump candidate, Trump would decide that continuing to campaign right on through November and beyond is in his best interest.
And that puts every down-ballot Republican on the spot to pick a side in that battle between Trump and not-Trump voters.

Yeah, that 10 minute driver change always irritated me! When I was at Metro as a newish driver, I noticed that all the senior guys would take over the bus and be on their way very quickly, usually in less that a minute and a half. I followed their lead, and did the same. Put your stuff behind the seat, do a quick seat adjust, and adjust mirrors on the fly; it just doesn’t take that long.
On the other hand, I saw some drivers who were just meticulous and would take up to 15 minutes to change over, just drove me nuts.

One of the last times I was on Pierce Transit, while observing T line extension testing, a streetcar r was held up because a PT bus was parked but just enough into the track at tge 10th and Commerce zone. Normally the bus if out of service, is supposed to be in the tunnel during breaks.
