First of all, it was $3,200 mailed out over 13 months (March ’20 – March ’21), per filer. And even more per child. So a family of four received checks mailed by the government totaling $11,400 over a 13-month period. Additionally, this family’s student loan payments went away, and maybe so did their mortgage payment, for awhile.
The preceding paragraph covers payments to families that filed income taxes the previous year, even if they were working and didn’t need the additional money. Next time Queen YLB whines about businesses getting PPP dollars she might tell us what the four Queen YLB family members did with the $12,800 mailed to them by the federal government over those 13 months. My wife and I didn’t receive a dime – our income was too high.
Now, let’s turn our attention to the unemployed, shall we? Someone who lost a job during the pandemic got the above-mentioned $3,200 if (s)he was employed the previous year.
And they got state unemployment.
And for four months (Apr-Jul) they got an extra $600 per week unemployment from the federal government.
And for nine months (Dec ’20 – Sep ’21) they got an extra $300 per week unemployment from the federal government.
And the duration that unemployment benefits were paid was extended to 79 weeks. That’s a year and a half sitting on the sidelines, collecting government checks and stiffing the landlord.
And their student loan payments were paused.
And if they stopped paying their rent Jay Inslee prevented their eviction for non-payment (and landlords got help from the federal government).
Summary: For the unemployed or those who faked it, that’s a year and a half sitting on the sidelines, collecting government checks while stiffing the landlord.
It wasn’t “millions of people drop[ping] out of the workforce”, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit. But it was a substantial number of people who were disincentivized to look for a job because of all the dough that rolled in, or didn’t roll out, when they were sitting at home.
In January 2021 the labor participation rate was 61.3%. Now it’s 62.8%. So that’s 1.5% or about 1.5 million workers who weren’t in the labor force in early 2021 but have been forced back in.
This is why the unemployment rate is going up and why the participation rate is going up.
