    Capping off a year of renewed focus on low-level street crime such as shoplifting, the Seattle Police Department announced just before the new year that it had arrested 11 “prolific shoplifters” in an operation targeting downtown retail theft, booking eight of them into the downtown jail.

    I think by now it’s become axiomatic for most voters that cops lie. What they need to better understand is that cops don’t work.

    Assign them to address an epidemic of shoplifting and the result is a bunch plain clothes spending the holiday shopping season hanging out downtown grooming the clerks at Forever 21 before rounding up the nearest helpless schizophrenic in a tent.

    This is what police do.
