A company like Twitter is very different from GM or GE. They have no assets other than their workforce and their IP. And the two are inextricably intertwined. The potential for the company to grow, increase revenues, achieve profitability, or gain market is based on the quality, utility and value of the IP. Everything else follows from that. But in a rapidly evolving user environment the IP simply cannot remain static. Ask RIM or MySpace.
So these companies are forced to front load the core competency of software engineers to be constantly developing new features, new capabilities, enhanced security, or better analytical tools for advertisers. And while it was clear even before Musk stumbled into this, that Twitter would need to trim it’s workforce in 2023, by overspending for the company and going drastically into debt to do so, Musk has forced that to be much more severe than planned and on a much more accelerated schedule.
It will be very difficult for Twitter to rehire and rebuild after this.
It’s the equivalent of GM selling off half its robots to cover a crazy loan to buyback stock. If Twitter can’t code they can’t grow. They may not even be able to ensure a stable platform. And their advertisers all know this. That won’t prevent some of them from taking advantage of fire sale prices on ad placement. Which is the next predictable step in this saga.
