Friday Open Thread

I don’t claim any expertise in the Seattle Community Court. But it seems good. And I certainly don’t trust Ann Davison. So, I am pretty skeptical of her plan to send fewer people there and more to prison. Especially if they are only committing very low level misdemeanors.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

Likelihood of Trump Indictment in Manhattan Fades as Grand Jury Wraps Up

At least three of the witnesses once central to the case have either not heard from the district attorney’s office in months, or have not been asked to testify, according to people with knowledge of the matter…. And the remaining prosecutors working on the Trump investigation have abandoned the “war room” they used to prepare for their grand jury presentation early this year, the people said, leaving behind an expansive office suite and conference room on the 15th floor of the district attorney’s office in Lower Manhattan.

The grand jury’s expiration at the end of the month does not preclude prosecutors from impaneling another jury…. But impaneling a new grand jury could create challenges for any potential case. Mr. Trump’s lawyers could argue — and a judge might agree — that prosecutors were inappropriately hunting for a more favorable group of jurors.

    Trump broke Steve.

“The policy contains explicit gender discrimination that recent court decisions have found to be unconstitutional and violate Title IX, and it also explicitly bans ‘braided hair or twisted rows/strands,’ which is a proxy for race discrimination and disproportionately harms Black students in the district.”

Wonder what excuse she will come up with when she loses in November.

If the November election for Georgia Governor were today, and these were the only candidates on the ballot, who would you vote for?

    Brian Kemp – 50%
    Stacey Abrams – 45%
    Undecided – 5%

She can’t even beat the second-place dude.

The polling also placed a potential Perdue vs. Abrams race before respondents, with Perdue ahead 49-46% and 5% undecided.

If she were to drop, say, 80 pounds, that would help her.

What’s stuck with me has been that state level polling has been consistently more plagued with unusual error rates when compared with national polling. Which of course is particularly relevant in midterms.

What also strikes me is recalling how by late April of 2020, with Biden in clear lead to take the nomination, and polls showing huge advantages over Emperor Twump, Democrats continued to campaign, organize, and communicate as the overwhelming underdogs who needed to come from behind. Good thing that. Democrats were not ahead. Once the known error is statistically backed out of those state level polls, Trump was winning in many more states and the race was essentially a dead heat.

The last thing that strikes me is how much of that error depended upon how polls accounted for “undecided”. In two candidate polls, with “undecided” as an option Trump’s share was understated by over 3 points and Biden’s share was overstated by 1 point. Removing “undecided” completely flips that error. This is a nightmare scenario for public opinion pollsters. Because it essentially tells them that a largish number of respondents are lying to them. And pollsters don’t yet understand how to account for that.

But Republican voters depend upon lies. They don’t just engage in lying. They feed on lies. Lies give them nutrition and sustenance. And so as a consequence I believe this kind of polling error is not only still with us in 2022, but it is probably even more significant. Because not only has the Republican lying grown astronomically more exaggerated, but also voter’s uncertainty is much greater – it always is in midterm elections.

Just like in 2020, I hope Democrats continue to work and fight with everything we’ve got, regardless of what the polls say. Not only because the polls will probably be very wrong, but also because Democrats are facing big disadvantages in this cycle. But Democrats faced much bigger disadvantages two years ago. Much bigger by orders of magnitude. Beating Trump was a black swan. The numerical, statistical, and practical advantages of presidential incumbency surpass all other systemic political advantages by orders of magnitude. But Democrats not only won the presidency, we flipped the Senate by flipping hard core traditional red states to blue. We can do it again if we really want it.

    2. He had a gun when he forced himself on her.

    3. After she reported the rape, he doxxed her and encouraged his supporters to harass her, which they did.

    4. One of his fellow GOP legislators “sought a copy of the police report and made inquiries into how the young woman herself could be referred for criminal charges for reporting the alleged rape.”
