So far so good.
I’ve been watching it live streamed on a split screen monitor by Twitch streamers inside the protest (infiltrators).
Police have escalated very slowly and carefully. They know there are stashes of heavy weapons and ammunition within the protester areas. And they’ve spent three days allowing those protesters with enough sense to quietly slip away, with their assault rifles and fire bombs perhaps to fight another day. Last night they were continuing to allow people to leave but also beginning to take the leadership into custody. That has continued this morning. But about mid day it would appear that vehicles remaining within the area are now being seized. They are allowing protesters to retrieve personal belongings from their vehicles before being escorted out of the area. And that has produced a few scuffles. The Special Forces guys have lots of practice with this from overseas I assume. They appear to be polite but very no nonsense.
Recently (in just the last hour or so) a few of the protesters began using their kids as human shields in an attempt to prevent the police from seizing vehicles. That only resulted in the children being forcibly separated from the parents and removed from the area to a safe location to await reunification with their parents. Most of the parents then immediately left in order to be reunited with their crying kids. Canadian authorities are not saying if the parents will be charged with endangerment/abandonment.
The scuffles I’ve seen have mostly been orderly and minimally violent, mostly focusing on getting the assholes away from their vehicles until they could be searched and secured against the presence of weapons or explosives. Police are largely ignoring all the drug and porn stashes. But definitely not the weapons. That option seems to have expired last night.
Notable images have included individual cops and even a few of the Special Forces guys completely surrounded by angry protesters yelling and spitting in their faces. And none of the cops opened fire. I worry that may not last as the protesters become more frustrated at seeing their party shut down. But there’s hope. Limited and restrained response works so far. And that is a compelling counter-narrative to what most urban police departments in the United States preach. I’m not aware of any cops suffering any injuries so far, other than emotional trauma and some ego contusions.
