The former staffer to Rep. Ron Paul, John Schaffer pleaded guilty to obstructing an official proceeding and entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon.
In pre-trial detention hearings early this week the other main founder of the Oath Keepers Stewart Rhodes, previously identified as “Person Number One” in documents filed opposing pretrial release, was revealed to have amassed and positioned caches of military weapons, ammunition, gas grenades, grenade launchers, and explosives in the immediate vicinity of the terror attack on the Capitol.
Captured communications between Schaeffer, Rhodes, and other senior Oath Keeper leadership indicated that in the aftermath of the terror attack the failure of Rhodes and associates to deliver the weapons to the Oath Keeper “Quick Reaction Force” had led to a breakdown in trust and angry exchanges. Rhodes, who was not himself present at the Capitol and who has not been arrested or charged, is known to be a person of interest to FBI investigators. Other senior Oath Keeper organizers who are arrested are remaining in pretrial detention.
Schaeffer won the race to cooperate and gave up the rest of them.
This is released on a Friday so the defense lawyers and their clients can sweat the weekend. By Monday morning DOJ will have an ordered list of defense attorneys to get return calls starting at the top. Those at the very top will still be given a chance to cooperate. But it will be a time-limited offer. And it will be contingent on the cooperating witnesses willingness and ability to give up the planners, organizers, and financial backers of the terror attack.
An slightly ironic aside related to Schaffer:
Schaffer is apparently a touring “Heavy Metal” musician (don’t ask me) and at least part of his inducement to cooperate was to enable him to return to touring immediately. As a cooperating witness in a complex organized criminal conspiracy case he will thus be receiving a protective detail from the U.S. Marshal’s Protective Service.
So at some point in the near future U.S. Marshals will be seen cringing in the wings while some hideous variation of Spinal Tap (Back from the Dead era) takes the stage.

It’s really hard to say because so much will depend on charges, convictions, and recommendations. For example Schafer could be charged with assault for his use of chemical sprays to disable police. And as a named, unindicted coconspirator that means any of his fellow coconspirators stand to be charged for the same crimes. Basically it means prosecutors have a lot of options and flexibility. And that’s what they want the other conspirators to know.
