As a matter of stipulated factual record, sources that “conservative” Trolls4Trump consistently rely on to support their weird-beard claims in comments on these threads are all now posting statements confirming that they routinely disseminate lies as a matter of editorial policy. And none of their regular readers/viewers/listeners have a problem with that.
There’s no legitimate way to “all sides do it” this stuff.
These media sources that are the backbone of “conservative” and Republican ideology, such as it is, are now publicly admitting that they fill their content with lies in order to distort the thinking of their readers and mislead them. FOX, OANN, The Federalist, American Thinker, Daily Caller, etc. etc, are all now issuing public statements declaring that they lie to those stupid enough to rely on them for information.
All media sources display bias in one form or another. But there is an important difference between lack of bias and objectivity. Some truths exist independent of bias on the part of any subjective viewer. Millions of “conservatives” are learning about that this week. Objectivity is the quality of an idea, or a proposition, that makes it “true” when the agreed upon conditions for the truth of that idea are met. Bias can lead observers to disagree about whether or not the truth conditions are met. Objectivity demands that the conditions exist.
The statements that these media sources have repeatedly made that Dominion Voting Systems technology was used to alter vote counts in many state election systems failed to meet those conditions in all known cases and at all known times. There is no set of truth conditions describing that assertion that can be described by any observer, regardless of their bias, capable of being met in any instance at any time relevant to that same assertion. These media sources did not speculate about “unknown or unknowable” cases or instances. They made specific statements about specific instances that were and are categorically false and can only be intended to be so. That is not “bias”. That is a fundamental rejection of objectivity.
A fundamental rejection of objectivity that is further reflected and reinforced in the ongoing assertions of “election fraud” not specifically tied to Dominion Voting Systems. They too are false statements. They cannot be shown to meet any agreed upon truth conditions. They can be asserted. And they are asserted. But it is not possible to do so in a way that is objective.
This is why when media pundits and politicians lament the partisan inability to agree upon “truth” they are missing something very fundamental. Modern “conservatives” appearing to be dissatisfied with the manifest truths presented to them by the objective perception of reality have chosen, not to reject “reality”, but instead to reject objectivity. When you allow yourself to arrive at a determination of “truth” in the absence of any agreed upon truth conditions you permit “belief” resting exclusively on bias to replace objective truth as the basis for a system of ideology.
We are presently witnessing this transformation among American “conservatives”. There is some lively debate about what the emerging system of ideology will look like. But what is more important for liberals, progressives, and Democrats to appreciate here is that, whatever that consensus system of ideology looks like, it will not be a system based upon objectivity. And attempting to argue with it, or persuade its adherents using rational, objective arguments is likely to fail.

The way it all works, in brief, as a federal prosecutor there are an array of fairly serious criminal charges you can bring on your own authority. It’s pretty awesome, and plenty intimidating. But facing defendants of means, with no priors, it’s seldom enough to get them to deal. And your job is to get them to deal.
Dealing can mean agreeing to a plea to spare the state the expense. But federal prosecutors are not as constrained in that regard as local DAs. It’s often as much about giving up your story including all of your co-conspirators in order to build a bigger, splashier, more significant case elsewhere.
So there’s almost always a second hammer blow that comes down involving additional, more serious charges from a grand jury. This is the “load ’em up, deal ’em down” phase of a federal criminal prosecution. These charges require additional due process in the form of a grand jury indictment. And for these folks it’s still months away. Like pretty much every other criminal justice system in the US it’s fairly mechanistic and formulaic. When prosecutors are “working” cases like these at this stage it means they are building files, collecting evidence, identifying and interviewing eye witnesses, and preparing experts to be presented to a grand jury at some point.
It’s usually not to long after those charging amendments are filed from the grand jury that the guilty pleas are announced. For many of these defendants that will be accompanied by a cooperation agreement pending sentencing. In this case I expect the prosecutors to be trying to build a larger criminal conspiracy case involving planners, organizers, and instigators who assisted with funding and logistics. The targets of those larger cases are generally left alone until the prosecutor is ready to charge it all.

These are two distinct phases of the process, and in between, there’s usually a frank conversation between defense counsel and client.
In many of these cases, there’s an additional consideration: After January 20 has come and gone, the abrupt realization that no pardon will be forthcoming.

They’ll bring in people from other offices. But it isn’t all that simple. As you can well imagine. Issues of budget and jurisdiction will come into play. Initially many of the defendants will be advised by the AFPD assigned to request continuance, which the court and the prosecutor will be inclined to grant. That extended time allows for a lot more investigation by prosecutors and the FBI. And by the time they are ready to move forward with permanently assigned counsel they’ll probably be in even more trouble.
Like so many others we’ve seen from “conservatives” in the last few years, these people made incredibly bad decisions when they told themselves they could get away with breaking into federal buildings armed with pipe bombs and molotov cocktails bent on kidnapping and assassination of elected officials. It has a lot to do with my post above about the rejection of objectivity.
Objectively, any such plan or proposition weighed against the available evidence and subjected to whatever truth conditions one might choose is manifestly self-destructive. Any other group proposing such a plan anticipates death and will often include suicide in their proposed plan.
These folks expected to be heroes, rather than martyrs. And for at least a day or so, while still safely enfolded in their cult belief system and while cameras and reporters sought them out they played that role for their audience. But their audience included the FBI. Watching them hold their own cameras in front of themselves as they live streamed their confessions to multiple federal felonies was one of the highlights for me.
As long as American “conservatives” continue down this path of formulating a political ideology informed only by belief in shared cult lies this sort of thing will be increasingly common for them.
As we’ve seen.
We can let them destroy themselves in the process. And that’s one way to move beyond this. But it may be a slower death than we might prefer. And that process of self-destruction will undoubtedly result in collateral damage to our communities as well as our institutions of democracy. I think liberals, progressives, and Democrats have to be prepared to consider trying to persuade some of them to return to sanity in order to limit that.
Besides, as much fun as it is to watch, I don’t really think we’ll ever see anyone as self-destructive as Trump come along again. We are right now probably living through the high water mark of capering lunatic “conservative” self-harm. Even if Trump runs again in 2024 I don’t think the media and big business will ever be willing to handle him the same way again. He could even win the nom. But it won’t have the same impact or be treated the same way.
