Texas is trying to criminalize the right to travel out of state for reproductive health care. It’s an updated version of “The Fugitive Slave Act”. The Texas GOP wants full control over what they view as their property.
Look at Texas, where state Attorney General Ken Paxton just sued the Biden administration to block a new rule that protects the medical records of people who cross state lines to obtain abortions.
All the rule does is prevent Texas from reaching into other states to demand patient records when people obtain reproductive health care that is legal in that state.
Texas Republicans are also mad that the rule requires reproductive health care to be “interpreted broadly and inclusive of all types of health care related to an individual’s reproductive system” — which means it could also protect the records of people seeking gender-affirming care outside the state.

We already did in 2016 and we found out. For sure.
That’s probably what makes Democrats as a political organization very different from Republicans. We aren’t stupid. We know what our challenges are. And we know what our opportunities are.
Unlike Republicans, in order to win a swing state Democrats have the unique challenge of assembling a very diverse coalition of different perspectives, demographics, races, genders, incomes, ages, and backgrounds. But we draw strength from that challenge. And within it lie our greatest opportunities.
Third Way politics was essentially a rejection of that challenge and of those opportunities. Catering to the sensibilities and irrational fears and biases of moderately conservative older racist white people betrays core constituencies and rejects the opportunities they represent. Thats how Hillary Clinton won the popular vote while losing the electoral college. Too much of the base stayed home.
And in an era of entrenched and increasing polarization elections are now being won and lost by razor thin margins depending on tens of thousands of votes against a turnout approaching 200 million. Resources spent on things that AdImpact don’t do as much as they once did. Nor do they go very far in a gigantic and very expensive media market like Florida. Even a campaign and affiliated PACs as flush with cash and volunteer support as Harris/Walz choices have to be efficient and precise. There are just much better opportunities elsewhere in 2024.
I’m certainly not disappointed to be shown some (weak*) evidence that Harris/Walz, PACs, and the DNC are not pouring money into radio and television buys in Florida. That’s frankly very good news. But it’s also not surprising and entirely what I would have expected from Jen O’Malley Dillon. She’s possibly just a tiny bit smarter than Lara Trump, even if she doesn’t have a new music video out this fall 😉

Because of how Republicans have distorted the electorate and the election processes in many swing and battleground states, a state like Florida or Texas has to be a long term project. Enthusiasm alone is simply not enough. Nor is engagement with larger and broader slices of the electorate. Even flash point issues like Dobbs may not be enough. Because Republicans have not only been very successful at voter suppression in the past, but also because they are advancing nationwide initiatives in state legislatures, in courts, and working behind the scenes. And they are becoming even more aggressive, legally and otherwise.
Marc Elias, who is the leading expert on this effort at suppression of democracy by Republicans and has been actively engaged in fighting it in court for years, recently broke this effort down on a pod:

In particular interested Democrats, liberals, and progressives should pay attention to his explanation of voter challenge methods and tactics being employed by Republicans to prevent voters ballots from being counted.
Elias talks about this at the 5:16 mark. His description of the voter challenge machine is perhaps a bit more simplistic than we know it to be.
We’ve all probably read a bit in recent months about the phony “voter registration” outreach being conducted by the Trump campaign. There’s a site or an app or a platform page targeting primarily non-white and younger voters in key states and districts, and urging them to register and offering to provide them with assistance. But what kind of assistance a user gets will depend on how they respond. Some of these are using some rudimentary AI to classify responses to otherwise seemingly innocuous inquiries or prompts. Others just ask “who do you plan to vote for?” (which is actually illegal in some of these states). Some ask “would you like to register as a Democrat or as a Republican?” (which is often legal – at least in states that register by party). Users who respond that they intend to vote for a Democrat or register as a Democrat get no further assistance. But their data collected is logged and goes into a larger data base used to generate lists of names for challenge.
We know that newly registered voters, while they actually have a higher propensity to vote in their first election, are also less likely to follow up with their registration, look for their ballot in the mail, call to inquire, or respond to a challenge. This part of the Trump/GOP operation is paid and funded and largely automated. But it requires Democrats to employ more volunteers and more effort to cure. I’m hopeful that the numbers and effort are there. But there’s big risk that they aren’t. Because this is a very serious challenge to turnout. An essentially automated means of filtering new registrants by voting propensity and then deleting them from the state voter roles means some percentage of the new turnout produced by the Harris/Walz renaissance and expansion will be wiped out.
Democrats need lots of volunteers to fix Republican voter supression. Building activated volunteer networks takes time and planning.

When I was twelve I remember one summer meeting and speaking with a National Park Service Ranger assigned to backcountry patrolling in the North Cascades. As a kid in love with backcountry hiking I thought he had probably the greatest job ever. I asked him how he got to be in the coolest job on earth.
He explained with some disappointment that to make it to the North Cascades he had to first complete a period of enlistment in the Marine Corp. Then four years of undergraduate education leading to a first degree. That got him enough “points” to rank high enough up on the listing to get his first seasonal jobs working entry gates and emptying trash at cannonball parks in Virginia and Pennsylvania. Then a Masters degree pushed him up the lists high enough to obtain full time employment. Then another twelve years in cannonball parks and national seashores waiting for his chance to open up before he made it to the North Cascades. He said he didn’t regret the education and encouraged me to stick to my studies. But he admitted he’d never used any of it even once in his entire career.
