In today’s vote in Salt Lake City censuring Reps Cheney and Kinzinger (with Mitt Romney looking on in approval while his beloved niece presides) the Republican Party National Committee describes the violent, terrorist, pipe-bomb sedition mob who overran Congress during the electoral vote count in order to prevent the election of Joe Biden as “ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse“.
And at the same time, the Republican Party National Committee declares that the U.S. House committee on which Cheney and Kinzinger serve, which is investigating how the violent, terrorist, pipe-bomb sedition mob was planned, funded, and organized, is aimed at “destroying President Trump”.
-A violent conspiracy to overturn a democratic election is “legitimate political discourse”.
-Investigating that violent conspiracy will “destroy President Trump”.

So let me get this straight, when a Republican said that storming the Capitol, throwing flag poles and what not, breaking windows, heads, and taking things that were not theirs, is now considered “legitimate political discourse”. The key takeaway should be a clear understanding by all voters that the Republican Party supports overturning elections by violence, sedition, and lawlessness. This isn’t about hypocrisy. This is about intent.
The man poised to take over control of the House next January will likely remove both Cheney and Kinzinger from the party before that. His party National Committee calls them traitors and criminals. He can’t ask his members to work with them and support them. He sees no choice. He isn’t looking for one. It’s easier and safer to simply agree.
Which means that the next Speaker is clearly declaring his support for protecting Trump and his team from any consequences for whatever role they played in the attack.
But far more concerning, he supports doing it again.
The weakest, most feckless human being to ever wield the Speaker’s gavel will yield to Trump and the mob and usher in the destruction of American democracy.
