FRIDAY

by Carl Ballard — Friday, 12/6/24, 8:01 am

– More density in Belltown, please.

– Bringing civility back to the Seattle City Council.

– Ann Davison is still the worst.

– Last Open Thread I mentioned the light rail reduction over the weekend. No more. It will happen later.

GOP cost-cutting discussions are devolving down to making federal teleworkers show up at the office. I do not see how this saves money on space rent, heat, light, and other utilities.

I do see how this reduces salary expenditures by inducing employees to quit. But that means nobody is watching financial institutions or answering the phone when a whistleblower wants to report a CEO engaged in insider trading.

Which, I think, probably is the ultimate objective of these discussions.

Crisscrossing Capitol Hill together on a marathon day of meetings with lawmakers, Musk and Ramaswamy got warm welcomes from Republicans. Their overall message was popular, too: A smaller federal government, looser regulations and a private sector approach to the public sector have long been cornerstones of conservative governance.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2024/12/06/doges-musk-ramaswamy-try-to-sell-congress-on-huge-spending-cuts.html

Move along, folks. Nothing to see. Just the same old retread policies that fail every time they’re tried: Downsize, deregulate, and privatize.

The last time conservatives had a fresh idea was … well, we don’t know. Archaeologists and anthropologists are still digging into ancient history trying to figure that out.

@12 China is more likely to blockade Taiwan than take it by assault. The Taiwan Strait is twice as wide as the English Channel and rougher. An amphibious invasion would be much bigger than Normandy and prone to failure. Taiwan has spent decades preparing for it. It’s much easier to put them in a sea and air straitjacket.

Large deficits are a result of revenue losses. If you want to fix deficits, you have to fix that. Certainly, Republicans are considering this side of the equation. Predictably, they’re looking at taxing the poor and working class with tariffs.

Of course, they’re considering spending cuts, too. Not to defense, mind you, and debt interest probably also realistically is off the table for cuts due to objections from the capitalist class who own the debt. Also, as a matter of ironclad principle, debts, and usurious interest on debts, must be paid. That’s why getting rid of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is a top priority.

The low hanging fruit is federal expenditures on health care. The federal government funds approximately half of America’s health care. Shutting down Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans health care would achieve massive cost savings. It also would fulfill the conservative dream of health care, doctor visits, emergency care, etc., being a special privilege reserved for the “successful” (i.e., people like them).

Having to step over the old folks moved out of nursing homes onto sidewalks is a tolerable minor inconvenience. Everybody else: Fee for service works just fine, and we have some bottled cures to sell you.

    Economy
Unemployment rate jumps more than a percentage point for Black women in November

Black women experienced the most significant increase, with the jobless rate surging to 6% from 4.9%. In comparison, the jobless rate for white women ticked up slightly to 3.4%, compared to 3.3% in October.
    …
Black workers as a group also saw the highest unemployment rate last month, which jumped to 6.4% from 5.7%. For Black men, the jobless rate hit 6%, but it held steady at 3.5% for white men.

    15,
He’ll get an appearance bond and a fair trial. Which is better than average in that jurisdiction for a violent assault. Unless his lawyers are idiots, he can respond by the deadline and appear for a jury trial whenever he runs out of delay tactics. In the mean time he can lie his ass off and play the victim to raise money from dumbshits like our troll who was foolish enough to buy the bullshit despite the obvious video evidence.

But… he’s a loudmouth who can’t shut up about himself. And he thinks he can talk his way out of any situation. So there’s an above average chance he’ll talk some shit before trial, especially since his lawyer’s tactic will center around delay. The longer the delay the greater the risk that Mr. Debate Me fucks himself by defaming his victim and/or intimidating her, potentially resulting in bail release conditions, fines, and a civil suit.

Given the circumstances he could have gotten out of this jam with a lowest level misdemeanor plea and a recomendation for a monetary penalty, victim restitution, and some community service. But that’s only available to people who aren’t stupid. So I’m not holding out much hope.

    Finding out is here.

The dead guy was CEO of United Healthcare, the insurance arm of publicly-traded UnitedHealth Group (ticker symbol UNH), which also provides PBM (pharmacy benefits manager) services and health care services to the general public. It’s the world’s 9th largest corporation by revenue, which exceeds $400 billion a year, and has a market cap over $500 billion. Here’s what Value Line’s Nov. 29, 2024, report about UNH says:

The results of the Presidential election was the shot in the arm the slumping quotation was looking for. The broader health insurance sector saw many of its shares propped up, with UNH posting an impressive 6% gain in value on the day the results were made official. The crux of the investor enthusiasm centers on the fact that the Biden Administration has been looking to lower reimbursement rates for senior healthcare. A Republican win seems to have eased that pressure significantly. More specifically, insurers that run Medicare Advantage were particularly giddy. These programs are private versions of the main government-run enrollment programs.

Keep this in mind when Republicans claim we “can’t afford” Medicare.

@18 Wasn’t he posting about the cost of alfalfa not long ago? Sounds like he has a spending problem. After all, a horse is a luxury, unless his F-250 doesn’t run and is up on blocks. My understanding from his recent investing posts is that he has a revenue problem, too. So probably the health care will have to go, and food after that, but he’ll still have a barn to sleep in and a horse to sleep with.

As the minority party, the way we win this argument is by always, every single time, responding with our own, very obvious, far more unpopular, far more disgusting, far easier program cuts that we know Republicans can’t assemble a majority to support.

We offer a dollar for dollar alternative taken out of the pentagon and out of bloated funding for local law enforcement.
