3. Corporate gouging. Corporate profit margins haven’t been higher since 1950.

5. Explosion in aggregate demand. Wealth effect from inflated stock market and zero interest rates made the top 10 percent spend like crazy. Everything from elmo-mobiles to shiny upgrades on houses and luxury goods.

So as not to alienate my liberal friends on this blog, I’d like to clarify why I voted against the Sound Transit propositions. Those guys at ST are scammers. They told us ST1 would cost “$X.” Then they came back with ST2 and their hands out for $Y. Then back with ST3 and hands out for $Z. From the get-go, they lied to the public about what this would cost, and they lowballed the tax bills. At one point several years ago I calculated it would cost an average King County household $28,000. The costs were fantastic; this light rail system cost 10 times the second-most-expensive mass transit system in the country. They spent vast sums on a tunnel from U. District to Northgate. Around here, transportation boosters always want to dig, and it’s always a boondoggle and usually a fiasco. See, e.g., the massive storm sewer under downtown Seattle where the viaduct used to be; in that case, the most expensive option was selected in order to enhance the views of filthy rich downtown office building owners and their tenants (better views = higher rents). I’ll vote for reasonable civic improvements, but I don’t play along with these ripoffs, and it seems they’re nearly all ripoffs. You gotta wonder whose pockets are being lined. At least Seattle voters had enough sense to kill the West Seattle monorail (although it took five elections to do that), after they realized they would actually have to pay for its massive cost overruns and overpromised, under-delivered buildout. Who the fuck is going to ride a monorail if there’s no parking at the stations?
