The growth of Ted Olson, on Prop. 8 and the lower Manhatten mosque, takes the breath away . . . and has Rush Limbaugh sounding flustered and befuddled.
Could Olson be inspiration for today’s Ted Van Dyk column in Crosscut, which imagines life in the future?

Go Ted Olson!
I don’t usually read Van Dyk, but I’ll checkout today’s article.

What has happened with Ted? He seems to have found God and gained wisdom. If only all conservatives had the capacity as he does to think independently and critically.

Mattyspews:
Ted Olson is a class act…and proof that there are some caring, feeling, and moderate Republicans in this world.

Thornspews:
It’s not a mosque. Sufis should not be suspected to spread violence.
Ted is a voice of sanity.
The issue has been hijacked by the krazies. The krazies are the ones who are spreading violence.
I’m hardly a fan of Ted Olson, the old alumnus of the Arkansas Project, but many kudos to the man for his fantastic work on Prop 8 and now this.
I sure have a bit more regard for the likes of a Ted Olson these days than say the run of the mill Blue Dog Democrat.

I hope some of our trolls appear to blast Ted for this position.

Does anyone really give a shit here in Washington about what gets built in NYC? Let ’em build the damn thing!
As I’ve said before, Islam is stuck in the Seventh Century, we can’t get ’em out of there. It’s up to them to realize flying planes into buildings ain’t exactly what Allah had in mind.

Exactly.

Kudos to Mr. Olson, but is this really so complex to interpret:
Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Wow an actual Republican who follows their beliefs. Amazing. You know, like if you believe in 1st Amendment rights it means supporting the rights even of a-holes like Fred Phelps or the KKK to speak, even though you disagree with their message. This guy thinks government shouldn’t be dug into our daily lives and decide things like, oh, who we can marry, or where religions can build on private land. So even though it’s good cheap politics, he’s sticking to his beliefs. Good for him, he’s in the tiny minority of his party, but good for him.

Mal Conspews:
It is the traditional conservative view in the tradition of Edmund Burke to support freedom of religion. It is outside the domain of the state. Those making a big deal out of this are opportunists like Newt and and reactionaries like the dude from the Family whatever.

I am sad to pronounce that none of our trolls have appeared on this thread. Not Puddy, not Cynny, not Max, not Crusader, not any of them. Why is it that when a true conservative expresses a rationally defensible position that none of our trolls, all proclaiming themselves to be conservatives, come here to applaud?

Who cares? This may be happening in New York, but the hysteria has infected the nation. Who cares? When the New York Republican gubernatorial candidate says that were he governor, he would have the government seize the land through eminent domain to prevent a private land owner from building, you have no problem with that?
The crazies are pecking away at our constitution like woodpeckers on crack and you just shrug your shoulders and say who cares? Every week another amendment is talked up about how it needs to be rewritten, repealed or just plain ignored. You must really proud to be able to sit on your ass all day long and let others worry about the freedoms you take for granted.
