I just don’t know what to say:
There was a shooting at Twilight Exit last night.
The gun buyers on surrounding streets underscore the case for Congress and the Washington Legislature to act get cracking on gun safety legislation, McGinn argued. “That’s one of the loopholes we need to close,” he said. “One person can sell another person a gun on the street and it’s absolutely legal. Do you see anybody out there doing a background check?”
Shirley Chambers has lost 4 children to gun violence in Chicago since 1995.
All the soundbites about how it isn’t guns who kill people, and all the victim-blaming that has been and will be heaped on Shirley Chambers and her children, and all the rationalizations about people with mental illness, and all the Othering of poor black people who live in cities, and all the sanctimonious hand-wringing about “cultural degradation,” and all the excuses and justifications and cynical rhetorical flourishes in the world will not change this fact: Shirley Chambers’ children are dead. All of her children are dead.
There is really nothing left to say that hasn’t been said before. I guess it’s once again the wrong time to talk about these things lest we offend some of the worst political actors out there. What we certainly won’t do is stop the next horror. We won’t do anything to stop the time after that or, or, or.
ArtFart spews:
“lest we offend some of the worst political actors”
Bullshit. It’s about time to offend the living hell daylights out of them.

No, no, you’ve got it wrong. It’s always correct to use inner city poor minority deaths as pawns in your larger argument for an ideological movement. Never let a crisis go to waste, once said a man destined to be mayor of Second City.
What I’m wondering is why there aren’t more HA threads that bemoan gun violence in Chicago, a city in which more than 500 murders occurred last year.
Anyone care to weigh in on whether it is helpful for President Obama to mention how much he enjoys gunplay while at Camp David?

Is this the right time for a black man from Chicago, a role model to so many, to be publicizing his sport gun use?

Chicago reaches 40 homicides in January
CHICAGO (AP) — A bloody weekend in which seven people were killed and six wounded has put an abrupt end – at least for now – to hopes that Chicago was at least putting a lid on its frightening homicide rate.
With a few days left in the month, the nation’s third-largest city now finds itself on the cusp of its deadliest January in more than a decade.

That’s Newtown, times two, for those of you interested in the body count.
President Obama, thought to be practicing for his upcoming skeet-shooting match with a Congresswoman from Tennessee, was unavailable for comment.
Serial conservative spews:
Why the assault weapons ban is (probably) going nowhere
While there was arguably more impetus for gun control after Newtown than there has been in years, it’s clear that the momentum has waned to some extent and people have, as the always do, refocused their attention on other political things, like illegal immigration, the budget and Obama’s Cabinet nominations.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....g-nowhere/
This doesn’t mean that HA has to stop talking about all of those inner city deaths, you know.
They’re still happening, even if you aren’t able to cash in on them.

For God’s sake, the man just lost his little child. Put a sock in it and let him speak and yell at someone else.
The left has a few image issues, most of them right-wing fantasies, but still, some things like OWS can give me some WTF? moments. There aren’t millions of eco-terrorists out there and shit like that. Just a handleful of librarian-types become eco-saviours and who still can’t find dates.
That’s the left. Silly at times, but not exactly threatening. The right on the other hand? There’s some serious whack going on over there. Whether guns, abortion, rape, minorites, immigration or any other paranoia that possesses them, they definitely need to chill out.
Meanwhile, I read today that our state Republicans decided to mess with the presidential electoral process too, and that corporations (they’re people too!) are shipping jobs from China to Mexico in their on-going quest to find the lowest cost labor on the planet which can manufacture their product.

@ 5
I wondered how long it would take for that to show up here. RR must be having his semiweekly colonoscopy/obstipation relief or it would be posted already.
If one takes the time to watch rather than read the HuffPo/MSNBC summary, it’s a little different:
http://twitchy.com/2013/01/29/.....-hecklers/
Transcript:
“I ask if there’s anybody in this room that can give me one reason or challenge this question … why anybody in this room needs to have one of these assault-style weapons or military weapons or high-capacity clips. [Pause, waiting for response.] Not one person can answer that question.”
Audience members: ”[Unintelligible] Second Amendment shall not be infringed”
Public official: “Please no comments while Mr. Heslin is speaking. Or we’ll clear the room. Mr. Heslin please continue.”
Heslin waited for a response. And when he got that response, it wasn’t Heslin who registered outrage — it was the media.
Don’t like the answer to the question? Best not to have asked the question in the first place.
Steve spews:
Yes, it’s better to post the transcript and hope that nobody watches the video. As I did previously, thank you. As I said before, some people don’t know when to keep their mouths shut. Or dress appropriately. Are camouflage outfits a new fashion statement on the right these days? Or are a bunch of people showing up at a meeting dressed in camouflage simply intended to intimidate others, say like a grieving father who very recently lost his child to gun violence?
“Best not to have asked the question in the first place.”
Yeah, he had it coming to him. So what if he’s distraught? Some people, apparently not those on the right, actually have sympathy and show a little bit of respect to the guy.
They could have saved it for the next speaker but they didn’t.

Did I hear that right?
Serial conservative spews:
@ 10
You’ve been hearing it for awhile, YLB. If you’ve been paying attention.
1. During last year’s presidential election Andrea Mitchell was caught manufacturing a Romney gaffe where none existed.
2. During last year’s GOP primary, Ed Schultz edited video of Texas Governor Rick Perry to make him look racist.
3. In April of last year, the “Today Show” was caught editing audio of a 9-1-1 call to make George Zimmerman look racist.
4. In August of 2009, Contessa Brewer sliced and diced a photograph so it wouldn’t look like a black man attended a Tea Party carrying a firearm.
And just today, NBC was caught in yet another malicious edit, this time to make Second Amendment advocates look as though they did something as heinous as heckling the heartsick father of a child who lost his six-year-old son in the Sandy Hook massacre.
http://www.breitbart.com/Big-J.....ptive-Edit
I’m pretty sure George Zimmerman objects to selective editing of things like photographs and recorded phone calls, too.
What you’re doing, YLB, is tacitly admitting that the guy @ 5 wasn’t heckled, and your response seems to be something on the order of ‘Yeah, well, your side lies, too.’.
That might be an accurate claim to make. Doesn’t validate @5, tho. Quite the opposite.

@ 9 “If we get rid of guns, we’ll have less gun violence.”
Maybe less gun violence but not less violence. We are a violent society.
One of the worst school killings wasn’t commented by guns but dynamite in Bath, Michigan in 1927. A crazed right winger angry over property tax increase for schools and other perceived wrongs killed 43 people mostly children. It would have been worst except half his charges didn’t go off. There was a short in his wiring.

More on Chicago’s murder rate:
The death toll by murder in Chicago over the past decade is greater than the number of American forces who have died in Afghanistan since the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom, according to a police analysis.

You’d think we’d hear about this more, as our president used to represent Chicago as a state senator and as a US senator from Illinois.
At least we’re hearing about it, finally, on HA.

Am I seeing that right???
And Perry’s family had a hunting getaway named what???

MSNBC ‘reviewing’ Newtown ‘heckled’ video
MSNBC is reviewing its portrayal of the testimony of Neil Heslin, the father of a Sandy Hook victim, at a legislative hearing in Hartford on Monday. The 33-second video clip in question, embedded above, features a graphics box saying “Mocked and Loaded. Sandy Hook Victim’s Father Heckled by Gun Rights Advocates.”
“We’re reviewing the video in question,” says an MSNBC source.
Smart move, considering that Heslin wasn’t, in fact, heckled. Audience members merely answered a challenge that Heslin posed from the microphone.

It’s not just Breitbart now, YLB. Please, though. Begin taking issue with WaPo credentials.

We don’t see Jerry the klown or Puddybud anymore because it finally dawned on them that doing the same thing expecting different results is insane and pointless.. They can do that in their own echo chamber and have a better time.
And citing Breitbart about “selectively edited videos” is not only insane..
It’s laughably stupid.

The Volt and Leaf are vastly different automobiles.
A friend of mine just bought a Leaf. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that there’s a new one about to be released and that the price will be a few thousand lower than the one she bought.

Serial conservative spews:
Center for American Progress has the solution to gun violence in Chicago.
We just need to buy more Volts and Leafs, and give our climate a break.
“Is it higher? Yes. Last year, we hit a record number of murders from guns, and this year, we were already outpacing last year’s numbers. Now, there are contributing factors that are not under anybody’s control, and it may seem odd, but it is factually true, one of them is actually the weather. There is a dramatic increase in gun violence when it is warmer, and we are having this climate-change effect that is driving that.
http://hotair.com/archives/201.....something/
Don’t miss this:
At which point, Scarborough interrupted Hefner: “Can I just stop you right there and say, conservative bloggers across America thank you for saying the climate change is responsible for the rising murder rate.”
Indeed they do.
YLB spews:

Those vulnerable Dem senators up for re-election in 2014? Different story entirely.
Tougher background check standards is a laudable goal. Also most likely all that will happen.
You can always hold out hope that climate change will revert to the norm and all those murders in Chicago will stop.

Any black man from Chicago should be expected to acquire and be proficient with any type of weapon.
Serial conservative spews:
Let’s call this bipartisan opposition to a poorly constructed, knee-jerk response to a bunch of white children dying due to gun violence on a single day, when Feinstein had all the time in the world to put something less nonsensical together when it was just poor inner city children dying due to gun violence on a nearly daily basis.
As a coalition of gun control advocates pushes for a new federal Assault Weapons Ban, U.S. Senators Mark Pryor and John Boozman of Arkansas say they cannot support California Senator Dianne Feinstein’s bill. Pryor says the objective should be to lessen gun violence not violate people’s constitutional rights.

Propping up a gun violence victim to parrot grade-school language written by someone else might have been great theater, but it doesn’t help ram through a bill this poorly written.
