Huh. I’m guessing the Republicans’ little voter challenge stunt isn’t generating quite the kind of media coverage they had intended. The papers and TV newscasts are now filled with tales of angry voters, wrongly disenfranchised at the hands of the GOP’s unscrupulous leaders and incompetent interns. And more errors continue to surface as voters respond and Democrats pour through the list.
The Stranger drolly dubbed the fiasco “Fibby-gate”, but an astute reader pointed me towards an intriguing tidbit in the Mercer Island Reporter that suggests Fibby-gate may have closer connections to White House scandals than just a little amusing word play:
Island residents Linda Ayers and Lori Sotelo had a whirlwind four days last month when they visited Washington, D.C., after being invited there for a holiday reception by a friend who works for President George W. Bush.
…
The pair arrived in Washington on Dec. 12. The next day, they attended a briefing in the Executive Offices building with Bush’s chief strategist Karl Rove and Chief of Staff Andrew Card.
Of course it was KCGOP Vice-Chair Lori Sotelo who falsely declared “under penalty of perjury” that she had personal knowledge that her victims were illegally registered to vote. While I’m not necessarily suggesting that Rove himself had his fingers in the KCGOP’s botched voter intimidation effort, it is certainly the kind of dirty trick that bears a likeness to his handiwork, if not his actual fingerprints. Regardless, there can now be no question that Rove is a man who Sotelo knows, admires and emulates.

Don’t be a sucker, Goldy. This is their small-town, hometown newspaper making the story bigger than it is. Most likely, they stood at the back of the room for a meeting or conference where Rove and Card were attendees and/or speakers. It means NOTHING.
Goldy: “…there can now be no question that Rove is a man who Sotelo knows, admires and emulates.”
There are all kinds of questions. For one, she may know OF him, but there is no evidence that the two have ever spoken. The “admires” comment has even less evidence. I’ll grant you “emulates” ONLY because it is your opinion based on your partisan-fogger perception.
By your logic, it is only a slippery slope to saying “Goldy knows, admires and emulates Charles Manson” because you’ve allegedly seen the guy’s photo on TV.

Republican intimidation is what this latest episode is. Was Rove involved? He certainly knows about dirty tricks. In the Book, “Boy Genius” (sic) by Lou Dubose, Jan Reid, and Carl M Cannon, they point out one of Rove’s early dirty tricks against opponents where ” A Democrat named Alan J Dixon, who would later make it to the US Senate, was running for Illinois state treasurer that year. Pretending to volunteer for the campaign, Rove got into Dixon’s office and swiped some letterhead. He wrote a letter and mailed 1000 copies, even distributing it to skid road bums, inviting them to Dixon’s headquarters for ‘free beer, free food, girls and a good time for nothing’. It was just a dumb prank, he insisted when his authorship of the letter was exposed.” Republican ethics are an oxymoron.
The League of Women Voters has worked for years to encourage people to vote. Republicans are not concerned about people voting, unless they vote for them. Whatever it takes to win. If the Republicans were really concerned about voter registrations being valid and helping citizens to exercise their right to vote they would have raised concerns about particular voters long before now. Instead their current efforts are just another campaign stunt. And they also showed us what the acceptable Republican level of voter registration error is – a whopping 10% error rate. And they did this challenge under oath? I hope that some of those falsely accused sue. What next – will the Republicans challenge voters for not being Christians or not voting Republican or opposing the Iraq War? Its alrady there you know in Bush’s government, people don’t get jobs unless they voted for him and Federal tax dollars for social programs go to faith based organizations which can refuse to hire people if they don’t believe in Christ.
artistdogboy spews:

I say a curse on all these incompetent fascists houses. None of those voters will be allowed to vote a regular ballot – they must vote provisional ballots. All must attend a hearing to prove their registrations are valid. For some, that means taking time off from work and loss of pay. You bet your ass that some people will decide it’s not worth the time and trouble – and others will want to be compensated for lost pay and the trouble they’ve been put through, not to mention public embarassment and emotional distress. Some may face ribbing from co-workers and acquaintances for months or years to come: “Hey, Joe, how’s life in the storage locker?”
LAWSUITS.
The word is written all over this event. Lawsuits galore — against Vance (who approved this operation), against Sotelo (who signed the forms), against the intern nincompoops responsible for negligent research, against KCRP and its parent organization WSRP.
Let’s hope we see criminal prosecutions, as well. The law protects our rights to vote. People who wilfully interfere with that right are criminals. Prosecute these jerks to the hilt!

Unnamed and unreliable sources have claimed to have spurious proof that Goldy, Roger and Shiftless Lucy allegedly once shared a hot tub at Ron Sim’s house and that Jell-O wrestling between the four followed.
Sims’ campaign office was contacted, but said that they do not comment on Mr. Sims’ personal life and that they feel it isn’t relevant to his running of King County.
The connections are undeniable. Both Roger and Lucy are frequent posters to the website run by Goldy. Furthermore, Goldy has publicly admitted on more than one occasion that he not only knows the phone number of a Sims campaign staffer, but that he has even spoken to people who have been in the same room as Sims within the past year.
Allegations of other sexual behavior have also surfaced. Most recently, when interviewed by a female reporter for one of the major Seattle TV stations, it appeared that Sims smiled at her. This could be pure speculation, but considering the gravity of the upcoming election, why would he smile at her if they weren’t having verbal intercourse?
More details to follow.

We only have Rabbit’s denial that he was in a hot tub. Since he did not deny being there or anything else, we must deduce that he WAS Jell-O wrestling with the others.

If I ever heard of a Democrat conducting themselves this way in my turf there would be hell to pay. And equally so if a republican did the same thing.
If you are going to challenge voters that you think are illegitimate, do it at a time where it can be reconcilled in a fashion that promotes fairness. If you cannot, then you have an alternate agenda. It is very clear that this is not the case in this situation.

I agree that last-minute stunts aren’t kosher — be they Goldy’s or Vance’s (who I didn’t want back in charge). However, it should be noted that KingCo had a full year to deal with this. As I explained in another thread, the simple flagging of “low-hanging fruit” is a fast, simple and inexpensive process. For example, there is NO excuse of any kind for a registration address that blatantly contains “PMB” in it.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@50
Mark, you worship form over substance. It doesn’t matter to you if a voter is a U.S. citizen, a veteran, has worked and paid taxes all his life. You think if he registered to vote at a postal box — whether from ignorance, by mistake, or maybe because he’s down on his luck and homeless — his right to vote should be taken away. Fuck you, Mark!
The difference between Democrats and Republicans on voting issues is simply this. Democrats think the right to vote is precious and defend it. Republicans view the right to vote as a threat and would grant it only grudgingly.
Republicans would take away the voting rights of 100 people to prevent 1 ineligible from voting. Democrats would say, better to let 1 ineligible person vote than to take away the rights of 99 eligible voters.
Republicans constantly whine about “voting fraud,” but rarely find any. Republicans target Democratic precincts for their “vot fraud investigations” and don’t care a whit what goes on in Republican precincts. Fucking hypocrites.
Fuck you and your armadillo, Mark. When you’re ready to participate in an honest, nonpartisan, STATEWIDE effort to prevent election fraud, reduce errors, educate voters, and protect the voting rights of EVERYONE, then we Democrats can do business with you. Until then, fuck you and your armadillo.
Janet S spews:
We must be hitting a nerve. Now Roger is advocating breaking the law. If you are down on your luck, it is okay to declare a post office box your legal residence. If Dean Logan hadn’t stonewalled the inquiries, they could have been dealt with months ago. But, he didn’t, and now there are thousands of illegal voters on the books.
But, tell me, did he sleep with her, or did she sleep with the manager, or did he say that she said that . . .

Mark spews:
Roger @ 51
I believe in substance and action — not political hot air and false promises.
I will say this one more time for the record: Flagging the “low-hanging fruit” bad registration addresses is an easy, inexpensive and fast process.
Democrats dilute the value of legal votes by giving it to anyone who will vote for them. That dilution violates legal voters’ rights as much as improperly taking away a valid vote.
The GOP made a mess of what should have been a simple and honorable process — holding KingCo’s (and the rest of the state’s) feet to the fire over illegal registrations. KingCo had an entire year to do what I could have done in a day (or less). 30 days before the election, you “freeze” the data file, process it for illegal addresses and flag appropriately.

All you can say is that they were in the same room (of unknown size) for a “briefing.” I was in the press pool for President Reagan’s visit in 1984 — 10 feet from the man. Does that mean I “met” him??

We’ve already gone over the fact that merely being in the same room is irrelevant.
The only report we have of the trip to the White House says they “attended a briefing in the Executive Offices building with Bush’s chief strategist Karl Rove and Chief of Staff Andrew Card. After that, they took a private two-hour tour of the West Wing including the Rose Garden.”
It doesn’t say they were simply “in the same room” as Rove and Card. I don’t know what happened there, but neither do you. What we do know is the White House’s western region political director invited them to the WH; they came, attended a briefing with the chief of staff and the president’s chief political strategist; then they went home and initiated the same type of voter initimidation/suppression tactic that we’ve seen attempted in Virginia, Ohio, Florida, and Milwaukee (at least).
Coincidence? Possibly. But to dismiss it as nothing but a coincidence under the circumstances is obtuse at best.

Richard Pope spews:
Lori Sotelo appears to have made a mistake in withdrawing 18 of the 140 voters whose challenges she withdrew in her 11/04/2005 letter to Dean Logan.
I went through her list of 140 names, and 139 of them were on the 1944 voter Excel spreadsheet list that Goldy had acquired from the Dean Logan/Ron Sims campaign.
I deleted everything from the Excel spreadsheet but those 139 names, and also eliminated duplicates. (Out of the 1944 voters whose names Dean Logan put on the spreadsheet, Logan’s office had listed 89 extra voters two, three or four times with the same registration ID number — so the GOP actually challenged only 1855 voters, and not 1944 as Logan claims.)
I then sorted the list by the registration address field.
5 of the removed names allegedly live at 325 Washington Ave S in Kent — which is a UPS Store! Another 6 allegedly live at 325 Washington Ave N in Kent — which is almost certainly intended to be the UPS store, but is listed incorrectly.
And another 7 voters allegedly live at 7829 center blvd se in Snoqualmie — which also appears to be some sort of office building or private mailbox place.
So that makes 18 challenges out of 140 (or possibly only 139) which were withdrawn incorrectly. That is an error rate of nearly 13%.
I plan to drive by these three addresses later today, take pictures of these places, and re-submit these 18 challenges personally if these addresses are obviously not people’s residences.

I have some bad news for you, I’m a Democrate, and Sims friends wasn’t going to count my ballot last month unless I prove that I signed it and not the Wabbit. Now mind you thats two days brfore cut off time on counting ballots. Now I got out my passport, driver license,Military ID and my concealed weapons permit to mail to King County. Just as I was ready to get an envelop and the phone rang and low and behold it was King County wanting me to come downtown to validate my vote. Traveling to Seattle was not part of my game plan, it’s dangerous down there with rabbid Wabbits. So they let me fax the material and they would count my vote for Ron. I was a little upset about them question my ballot and possible not count my ballot. That’s OK if it gets all those double voters off the books and prevents voter fraud. Now if I was in New Orleans, Mississippi, or Iraq I wouldn’t have been able to fix the problem. Then I would have to file a Federal Complaint and Dean Logan would have to explain again his short comings. So Don’t stereotype unless you are positive your own house is clean.

GOD OPPOSES I-912
Checking this morning’s news reports, I see I-90 will be closed for several weeks. Yep, Washington’s main east-west artery is shut down, blocked, out of operation, kaput.
The cause is a rockslide similar to the one that killed three women in a car recently, in the same area. The closure is necessary for WSDOT crews to clear the roadway, which won’t take very long, and stabilize a hillside that threatens to rain more deadly rockslides onto the highway. This will require quite a bit of digging by heavy machinery.
The rockslides and collapsing hillside are what’s called an “act of God.” You all know what an “act of God” is — The Boss is throwing rocks down on us to let us know what He thinks of the cheap bastards who don’t want to pay the taxes necessary to keep traffic moving in our state.

In other news, Veep Dick Cheney attended a closed meeting of GOP senators on the Hill yesterday to plead with them to exempt the CIA from any legislative ban on the use of torture.
According to news reports of leaked accounts of the proceedings, Cheney claimed the U.S. doesn’t torture detainees, but opposes the ban in case the president decides in the future that it’s necessary.
Yeah, sure. Fucking liar.
The Vice President wouldn’t make an unusual appearance at a closed-door Senate meeting to plead for authority to torture people if he didn’t think torture was an important tool in the administration’s “war on terror.” And if they think it’s important to torture people, then it’s not plausible that they’ve waited this long to do it, is it? I mean, here we are, 4 years into the “war on terror,” and these guys are figuring out just now, for the first time, that they want to torture people?
Yeah, sure. Fucking liar.
Cheney’s appearance before the GOP senators tells us something else, too. It tells us that what certainly looks like systematic torture of detainees in numerous U.S.-run detention facilities in Afghanistan, Iraq, Cuba, and other countries is not the actions of a few rogue soldiers.
It’s policy. Fucking liars. What they’ve done is throw a few low-ranking G.I.’s into the stockade for … following orders.

I don’t believe you to be THAT naive about politics. Is there a CHANCE that they maybe shook hands with Rove and/or Card? Sure. What do you think the chances are that a couple of local yokels got some sort of a private strategy session with two of the top advisors to the Leader of the Free World? Ummmmm…. We’re likely talking fractions of one percent. The far more likely scenario was that their friend quietly led them into the back of the room during a larger briefing so that they could say they were there. Note that the briefing wasn’t at the White House. If it was just the four or five of them, why would they go somewhere completely different?
Now, if Rove and/or Card had come to Seattle — or, especially, Mercer Island — for a fundraiser or whatnot, I would be far more inclined to believe that they chatted for a bit.

Who said they met privately? Why would Rove and Card meet with just a couple of people at a time? We’re seeing the same types of activities Sotelo tried here all over the country. It seems quite likely that it was a meeting in which “local yokels” from various places got some tips from the top dogs. It’s a very common occurance in national politics, especially in anticipation of a tough reelection campaign.
Is it the only possibility? Of course not. But you’re trying desparately to spin it by divorcing this meeting from its context, and that’s naive.

Fair enough. We actually don’t disagree too much on this. more a matter of which side of the equation we err on. I can see the possibility of it being some sort of group briefing with Rove and Card there for “wow factor,” etc.
But getting back to the original reason I posted: Goldy’s closing comment was, “Regardless, there can now be no question that Rove is a man who Sotelo knows, admires…” He also speculated about “if not [Rove’s] actual fingerprints.”
There is no proof that Sotelo knows or admires Rove. There is no proof that he was involved. The most you have is an “ain’t it curious that she was once in a briefing room with Rove.”
I know you guys see diabolical plots (or Vast Right Wing Conspiracies) at every turn. Personally, I see this as being more of a shoddy job — something one might expect from government workers.
I’ll say it again… Flagging some of the bad addresses is a quick, easy and inexpensive process. There is NO excuse for KingCo not doing it and there is NO excuse for KCGOP doing it right, either.

Wrote a reply, but it is in FilterHell. Suffice it to say that we agree more than we disagree. It seems more a matter of which side of the equation we err on.

Truth or it Lies Teller @46: Let’s clear the air. Florida 2000. What happened there. 2 out of 4 recounts go to Gore. Two out of four recounts go to Bush. Al Gore calls for four counties who are donkocrat for recount. Florida Supremes uphold against Repubs saying this is legit. US Supremes say no you can’t recount just four counties. Election over. Al Gore says he should have asked for all 67 counties being recounted. He admits he goofed. Also Lies Teller, why didn’t Gorbasm win his own FUCKING STATE YOU MORON (apologies to dj for going dj there!) Tennessee went Republican not donkocratic for Gore. I guess they knew something about Al Gore the blue states are still trying to determine in late 2005?

Yep, Tennessee voters were pretty smart, weren’t they. They gave us:
1. Terror warnings ignored; 2,800+ dead
2. U.S. goes to war against Iraq based on false intel; 2,032 American soldiers dead
3. Record deficits
4. Record number of Americans without health insurance
5. Millions more Americans in poverty
6. Millions of U.S. jobs shipped to foreign countries
7. Unprecedented corporate corruption
8. Skyrocketing fuel and housing prices
9. Vice President’s chief of staff indicted; House Majority Leader indicted; Senate Majority leader under investigation; president’s chief political adviser under investigation
Yep, Tennesseans should be real proud of themselves.

I say we give Steve Lacey, Teresa Selfe, Nick Fox, Jennifer Saulmann, Demene Hall, Brian Tesek and Margaret Bauer 10 minutes alone with Stefan Sharkansky. Let’s take a vote.

I plead guilty!

“I say we give Steve Lacey, Teresa Selfe, Nick Fox, Jennifer Saulmann, Demene Hall, Brian Tesek and Margaret Bauer 10 minutes alone with Stefan Sharkansky. Let’s take a vote.”
Hmm. “Jennifer Saulmann” simply doesn’t exist. There is NOBODY in King County registered to vote with the last name of “Saulmann” or even “Saulman”. Nor did any of the challenged voters at 320 Cedar Street have the first name of “Jennifer”.
As for Demene Hall, the Seattle P-I quoted her as saying that she was “too African American” not to be a regular voter. However, King County election records show that Ms. Hall registered to vote in 1994 — and has NEVER VOTED IN ANY ELECTION in the 11 years since registering.
Congratulations are in order to Sharkansky for exposing the misrepresentations about the supposedly outraged “voters” at 320 Cedar Street who were challenged.

PuddyBud “Stuckonstupiddon. You said you live in east King County. Well Baring is in east King County.”
So everyone in east King County lives in Baring? That is typical of the kind of logic you always use, PuddyBud. Completely pathetic and irrational.
“Now you are a Jesus follower? Congratulations. You renounce athiesm?”
No, PuddyBud, I still do not believe in mythology. But one does not need to believe in Mythology to admire the teachings of a man. But you and your lack of rationality would not understand that. You are pathetic and sad.
Jesus weeps when he sees you claim to be a christian.

Because you believe this world is all there is!
Good luck with that….and have your blood pressure checked hourly!

LOL, yes, you know me not. And I assure you, you will be dead and forgotten long before me, old man.
