Every Presidency a lot happens. And so a lot is on the ballot. Big stuff, little stuff. Obviously, we’re focused on a potential global pandemic today.
But! Recently the NLRB passed a rule to make easier for a franchise to fire workers in retaliation for union organizing. It is now on the individual franchisee rather than the larger franchise. A million of these smaller decisions — boards, court cases you never heard of — are on the ballot.

CNN doing another dishonest analysis of turnout:
https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/26/politics/bernie-sanders-turnout-trump-2020/index.html
First cut to the chase: It’s not about Sanders, or really any potential Dem nominee. It’s about Trump. Always was.
Into the weeds (a bit): Once again citing the Knight Found. study CNN concludes that since non-voters are pretty evenly split there can be no advantage from increasing turnout. But this makes a huge, and very important unspoken assumption about non-voters – that all non-voters are uniformly responsive to all turnout signals. And we also know that is not so. The CNN analysis admits to this, ever so briefly, about half way through, agreeing with the Knight study “…that about three-fifths of nonvoters were significantly more engaged with the news and politics than the remainder; that more engaged group was also more skeptical of Trump”.
The devil in the detail is that the older, more educated, and more financially secure a so-called “non-voter” is the more responsive they are to turnout appeals, and the more likely they are to want “anyone but Trump”.
And it’s ironic, because this “settled political wisdom” about turnout habits in general is precisely the basis for the arguments cited by CNN claiming turnout doesn’t change. It does change. We know it changes. We have the data from voter files showing that the composition of turnout varies from one cycle to the next. And that this change in composition operates among so-called non-voters. Many traditional, established Democratic political consultants are deeply skeptical of Big Data. They don’t trust that massive pools of anonymized can be reliably matched to individual voters and so-called “non-voters”. But the fact is that without such Big Data they have absolutely no way of explaining Trump’s steady march to victory in 2016 (and Clinton’s equally stunning failure).
This accounting for variations in turnout among so-called “non-voters” leaves the question (and it’s a pretty fucking important question) what kinds of signals produce the greatest response among these so-called “non-voters”? And the answer increasingly is the strongest response is produced by negative partisanship. And that has almost nothing to do with the ideology, or positioning of the Democratic nominee.
Right now, Trump himself, and to a lesser degree other Republicans like Moscow Mitch are the biggest drivers of negative partisanship. Among the primary candidates the biggest driver appears to be Mike Bloomberg, running $200 million dollar ad buys directly attacking Trump’s hideous record and stoking fears of his re-election. That’s what will trigger more left-leaning “non-voters” to show up in November. Not “bi-partisan unity” fables that nobody believes.

In the 2018 mid terms 95% of self identified Democrats voted for a Democratic candidate for the House, and 94% of self identified Republicans voted for a Republican candidate for the House.
In terms of affecting ballot outcomes, “swing voter” crossover is largely a myth.
To be clear, the data shows that among those party voters who were supportive of policies from the other end of the spectrum, significant percentages planned to voter for the other party. And that was more or less equally true of both Democrats and Republicans. But there’s the problem: the two groups cancel each other out. And then there’s the not so insignificant fact that these potential crossover voters make up a tiny percentage of the total. Seldom enough to affect the outcome in even the closest House races.
Turnout is the deciding factor. And, excluding targeted voter suppression, turnout is driven by partisanship. Republicans have known this for decades.

Part of the explanation for the 2018 California GOP wipeout is that, in addition to big changes in turnout composition in a lot of House districts, practically zero Democratic voters were willing to vote for Republican incumbents in the age of Trump. People who lose their access to health care services because of layoff provide a giant pool of unprotected population in which an infectious disease agent can flourish and spread rapidly to dangerous proportions.
Ironic if the rest of the post industrial economies manage to effectively contain the spread of the pathogen because of their reliance on single payer healthcare funding systems, while the United States becomes an isolated hot spot of disease because of our reliance on a system that collapses in response to temporary economic disruption.
Even more ironic if the people in the United States most likely to be killed or injured by such an epidemic also happen to be those citizens most likely to oppose single payer.

I didn’t lose a penny on naked puts; just because emperor has no clothes doesn’t mean I have to go around in my birthday suit. I have a nice fur coat that I wear all the time, in low markets, and high markets.
I’m glad I’m me, because it sure sucks to be you.

Don’t forget, if you take a pittance and increase it 54%, it’s still a pittance.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@81 I don’t need one. I’m not the gambler who got burned on naked puts. Do you spend your dividend checks on scratch-off tickets? Oh, that’s right, you don’t get dividend checks. Not to rub it in, but my dividends are up 54% in the last 2 years and 2 months. Well, okay, I’m rubbing your face in it.

No evidence in any data source that differential turnout in 2018 was driven by a brief economic downturn almost all of which occurred after the GOP election wipeout*.
It’s possible that Teh Dumbfuck did get cause and effect reversed.

@94 The S&P is back to where it was on October 25. All that’s happened is coronavirus or Bernie Sanders (take your pick) has erased December’s irrationally exuberant multiple expansion-driven rally. So it’s almost dishonest to call this a “correction.” As corrections go, it’s a pretty punk one, if this is all there is to it. We buyers want to see another 10% or 15% off the top. As for the sporting types wagering on naked puts, well, I can’t speak for them. Maybe someone here can.

Janet Yellen, who served as the first chairwoman of the Federal Reserve from 2014 to 2018, said on Wednesday that the concerning spread of the coronavirus across the world could put the U.S. economy on a path toward recession.
“We could see a significant impact on Europe, which has been weak to start with, and it’s just conceivable that it could throw the United States into a recession,” Yellen said in Michigan, Bloomberg reports.

Interestingly the only Republicans who list “Fear of Sanders”/”Fear of Warren” are Boomers. No other Republicans list any such fear of Democratic President.

Zero “Independents” list fear of any Democrat.

Dozens of Democratic superdelegates say they’re willing to sacrifice party cohesion to prevent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders from becoming their party’s nominee at the Democratic National Convention in July.
The New York Times spoke with 93 superdelegates following Sanders’s victory in the Nevada caucuses on Feb. 22, the vast majority of which said they believe the Democratic Party is headed toward a contested convention. Of the superdelegates interviewed, 84 said Sanders does not deserve to become the party’s nominee based solely on having secured the most, but not over 50%, of the delegates during the primaries and caucuses.
“If 60% is not with Bernie Sanders, I think that says something, I really do,” Democratic Rep. Veronica Escobar of Texas told The Times.

Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
122,
There have clearly been a few problematic Sanders supporters. Problem is that empirically they are no more numerous and no more problematic than supporters of any other candidate. And certainly not as bad as the worst of the Republican supporters.
But again, it serves mass media business interests to develop and support a character driven narrative of rival factions engaging in outrageous conduct. At least Sanders (and the other Dem campaigns) have quickly fired these people when the offending conduct is revealed. Trump holds an award ceremony and Republicans sob with pride and gratitude.
I think what the Brooks episode reveals (other than the remarkable stupidity of rank-and-file Republicans) is precisely how poised and loaded the Republican ranks really are to go into mindless oppositional outrage the very instant any Democrat appears to emerge from the field. If Brooks had appeared in Seattle wearing a “Warren” #42 jersey the reaction would be the same – every bit as extreme and every bit as stupid.
