As of next month I will no longer be employed by Entercom. Unfortunately for the righties who would like to see me off radio altogether, my paycheck will simply be signed by another company.
In what I suppose is a big shakeup in the Seattle and San Francisco radio markets, Entercom is trading KIRO, KTTH and KBSG to Bonneville for KOIT, KDFC, and KMAX. I’m not really sure what this means, but after the meeting today in which Entercom CEO David Field delivered the news, there wasn’t any wailing and gnashing of teeth in the office.
So I suppose this could be good for KIRO. Or bad.

Hmmm….KIRO has now come full circle. Bonneville…aren’t they the outfit based in Salt Lake City who had Lloyd Cooney and Ken Hatch running the place, and inspired Susan Hutchinson to do middle-finger exits not once, but twice?

Some of these mergers/acquisitions/trades within the radio/tv industry leave me scratching my head. I guess they have a strategy, but damned if I can see it now.
I would like to know if Bonneville has any track record on these types of acquisitions. Do they have a tendency to quickly experiment with format changes? Do they tend to be an active or hands-off ownership? Do they have any particular political leanings/bias?
Steve spews:
Bonneville formerly owned both KIRO radio and TV. At that time, and probably still, it was a fully owned subsidiary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I don’t recall Bonneville expecting all of its hosts and reporters to be Mormon, but its broadcast editorialists, Lloyd Cooney and Ken Hatch, were certainly right-wing.

Prime example. I heard the girl host on CNN reporting on the hearings of the domestic spying program. They were violating F.I.S.A. before 9-11, and it has not been reported.
All the news that reaches regular Americans has to pass through the corporate “filter”. Don’t let radio be reduced to just another mouthpiece for their corporate masters.

Wounded Cop Is Hero
According to this morning’s news reports, last night’s fatal shooting on Aurora Ave. N. started when an ex-convict wanted by the Department of Corrections showed up a a motel after visiting hours. When the motel owner ordered him to leave, the suspect assaulted a motel owner’s sons with a collapsible baton. The sons then chased him down the street, and the suspect pulled a gun and began shooting at them. At that moment, an unmarked police SUV was driving by, and the cop driving the vehicle positioned the SUV between the suspect and the men the suspect was shooting at, almost certainly saving them from being shot. The suspect then fired into the police vehicle from 5 to 7 feet away, wounding the police driver. The driver’s partner leaped out of the SUV and shot the suspect, who died at the scene. I’ll bet the sequel will be an award of the state’s Law Enforcement Medal of Honor. The wounded cop deserves it, because he risked his life to save those guys. As for the dead convict — good riddance to bad garbage. He won’t be fouling Aurora Ave. anymore, and our community is the better for his absence.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D – Vegas Mob) has slipped a provision into the Senate’s lobbying reform bill which would require bloggers to register with the FEC if their message reaches 500 or more readers (awww that leaves the jewblogger OFF the hook…).
One provision mentions “paid” efforts, but doesn’t specify if receiving donations (beer begging??) or ad revenue constitutes being “paid” or not. Failure to register, though, would be a criminal, not civil, offense.
A full discussion of the proposal is up at Of Arms and the Law. Hat-tip to Instapundit for pointing to the story.
Naturally, this is one more encroachment on political speech courtesy of the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act – the same folks who “got big money out of politics” for the last election cycles.

BREAKING: Entercom dumps KIRO, KTTH, KBSG
Interesting to see what others are saying…
Posted by: syd | January 18, 2007 at 11:47 AM: With Bonneville in there, the good people will be saved the poor ones will go. You know who they are, they know who they are…
Posted by: Tom | January 18, 2007 at 01:56 PM: I grew up listening to Bonneville Broadcasting stations.(No, I’m not LDS). They are as conservative as they can be. Their flagship station is one of Sean Hannity’s biggest affiliates. They only own one talker, the one that Hannity is on.
Two points:
The LDS church’s best chance of ever having one of their members elected President is the current third place choice for Republicans, Mitt Romney. This is a very big deal for them as they teach that one of their members will save the United States and its constitution. They are not going to own a large station that will spend it’s entire broadcast day bashing Republicans. Not this election cycle.
Secondly from a business perspective, KTTH is ascending in the ratings, KIRO is descending. The logical choice is to move Rush over to KIRO, buy Hannity from KVI and push their candidate in one of the largest markets. Why do think that KIRO hasn’t filled any open slots for a long time? No contracts, no buyoff.
So now we know WHY the jewblogger was given all those open holiday spots and his “bonus” end of Sabbath slot…

I don’t have a clue what Christmas Ghost is all about but I do agree that your show needs to be a little less whiny, kill the “Revolution” music because it is out of date, and focus on more mature analysis . . . much like you did when you sat in for Dave Ross. You actually managed to keep your voice “radio-like” and less cheerleader. And breaking a few stories/getting some scoops wouldn’t hurt either.
Leave Will in his view downtown condo . . .
skagit spews:
BTW, I thought you were great when you sat in for Dave . ..
Goldy spews:
Ghost @32,
“Word has it”…? Like you would have “word” from KIRO? I shot myself in the foot? I guess that explains why they just gave me another night.
I pursued radio to do what I do — if it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work it. But at this point the current management is happy with my progress, and I’ve been led to believe that the new management does not let politics interfere with its business decisions. So considering the fact that the just showed enough confidence in me to give me Saturday night, I’m not sweating bullets.
For those who think Bonneville will switch KIRO to a conservative format, what sense would there be in that? They already own KTTH — why would they compete with themselves? And why would they dump Dave Ross, who is a Seattle institution?
But if things change at KIRO and there’s no place for me there in the future, well, there’s nothing I can do about that, can I? The very fact that I got a shot at all is more success than I could have hoped for. And I’m not afraid of failure.
Skagit @36
My voice is naturally lower in the morning. I suppose I could consciously attempt to lower my voice at nights, but management keeps telling me my voice is fine.
skagit spews:
It isn’t that your voice isn’t fine . . . it is that you get much more excited and you don’t control it as well. Don’t do it . . . I guess I don’t really care. But, you have a much more professional sound and are more listenable when you pitch it down and control it. But, choose to sound like a junior high schooler on the school bandwidth . . . find with me.
skagit spews:
Sorry, didn’t mean to mock . . . I think it is important to control your voice when that is your living. And lots of people in radio have gotten better by doing that.
I just thought you were really, really professional sounding in the morning. And I enjoyed it. Frankly, I missed you when your fill-in was over. You are smart, articulate excellently, and listened really well. As good a radio as either Dave or Ron both I whom I really admire.

wow…i am so disappointed that this is your take on it. i know that you are alot smarter than this. if you want something to work out you have to MAKE IT work out…not hope for the best. that’s what kids do.
you know the old saying “the harder you work the luckier you get”
and i think we all [sadly] get it that you are not afraid of failure. you are getting pretty damn good at it too. i think you are actually afraid of success because you make way too many rookie ‘mistakes’ to have it be by chance. you are so smart and talented…and yet going no where fast. why?
i have always liked you goldy even though we have vastly different political views. in the rational world that is common place….
and ,no, i don’t have word from KIRO…..but i did hear it someplace more important….and it’s hardly a bastion of conservative thinking.so i hope they are wrong but i sincerely doubt it.
and ,goldy, being shot at isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. that’s why we have that expression [usually one of mocking or pity] about someone’s 15 minutes of fame……….
you truly are too smart to be doing this.
christmasghost spews:
well…obviously i meant to say “just having a shot”…not being shot at. sorry…doing too many things at once.
and yes…they gave you another night. but did they give you a contract? because if the answer is no, my friend, you better start changing your schtick.
skagit spews:
Goldstein, we both (CG and I) want you to stay . . . we’ve made that clear. Take it for what it’s worth. You said Tina gave you lots of good advice . . . it sure worked on the 9-1 program. You were calm and addictive – what could be better?
christmasghost spews:
skagit….exactly. goldy the 60’s retread thing just doesn’t work. and how old were you in the sixties anyway? come on man…it’s not like you are going to be considered a sell out …i doubt you are old enough to have even been there. you know what they say? there is nothing so classy [and addictive…good word skagit] as being exactly who you are.
and as far as radio goes…that means you leave the sophomoric language and music [and people] behind.
skagit spews:
One more thing . . . if KIRO does make changes in the future, why not make the best of this experience while you can. Try it a little straighter and see if you don’t get more response and more people to listen.
Besides, why just talk to the choir? If you want to make a difference, you have to attract more than just the choir. Ross and Reagan do it by being totally listenable and respectful. Monson is a dufus who attracts people like himself. I actually think liberals love people who inform. Conservatives need to be led and cheerleaded (?) on.
Use your intelligence, understanding of the issues, and ability to articulate to attract all people. You’ll have a wider audience and you might have a shot at another station if things don’t work out at KIRO . . . this is a chance of a lifetime.
skagit spews:
Sorry CG, I’ll except you from my definition of conservatives . . . if you are one. :)
Bill Cruchon spews:
“Unfortunately for the righties who would like to see me off radio altogether…”

We aren’t afraid of opposing points of view. You socialists most certainly are. It’s a telling difference, isn’t it?
christmasghost spews:
skagit…..yes, i am absolutely a complete conservative….in the real sense. i am just not one of goldy’s caricatures of a conservative.
i understand what you are saying when you say certain people need to be led and cheered on. BUT…..you have to admit that that statement goes for both the far right and far left.
think about it…….the cindy sheehan group that is still chanting SLOGANS from the 60’s and the “one step away from handling poisonous snakes” far right that are so stupid they need to be told what to think too. they are just two sides of the exact same coin.
and goldy ….no one except maybe the new owners wants to see you off the air. this is just more of your silly self aggrandizing that you allow yourself to indulge in rather than actually working at something really really hard.
it’s the old and tiresome “the man got me…..man”

I don’t think a three hour political talk block on Sundays fits into Bonneville’s style, regardless of the views being expressed. And perhaps even less so for someone who calls his blog “Horse’s Ass” and has problems with using too many of the coarser words of our language.
Sorry Goldy …
skagit spews:
Nah, Pope. That line up is in Salt Lake City. You’re smarter than that. That line up would never work anywhere else . . . I mean, Rush is on one of the Eastern stations.
And when Bonneville owned KIRO before, the station never sounded like that.
I think it’s anybody’s guess what they are going to do.
Point taken, Christmasghost with one little caution: rather than Sheehan and friends harkening back to the sixties, I see them as having the courage to be different in a time when conformity seems to be the trend. Perhaps their style and rhetoric needs to change now that the Dems are in charge (sort of), so your observation does make more sense today than it would have in 2006.
christmasghost spews:
skagit……… i have to point out that cindy sheehan is a very sad individual and her lack of imagination along with the fact that she couldn’t tell her son what to do while he was alive so now she is USING him makes me very sad. someday the whole cindy media whore circus is really going to hit her and when it does i doubt that any of the people that used and directed her will be around to pick up the pieces. hugo chavez??? i mean…can you be any more lame than that?
i have three sons all in their twenties…i can definitely feel for her. but she crossed the line. her son was not drafted…this isn’t the 60’s,he made a choice that she didn’t approve of and now that he’s dead she wears his picture around her neck while speaking out against everything he stood up for. it’s a sad sideshow…and frankly, i think she should be ashamed of herself. it doesn’t matter how anyone feels about the war, casey lost his life fighting for something he believed in. and no, it’s not okay for mommy to go running around getting attention for herself [when she really needs therapy] at his expense.
it’s not courage she is showing…it’s a complete lack of stability and decency.
think about it. what if you [being against the war] were killed during a demonstration where you had gone to stand up for what you believed in. your mom, after your death, comes out and basically says that everything you did and stood for was crap. would that be okay with you?
didn’t think so………
skagit spews:
Well, we finally completely disagree. As a parent yourself, how can you assume she is “using” her son. And you can’t possibly know how you would react if your child died in a war – regardless of how you felt about it before hand.
Did you ever see Fahrenheit 911? If you did, you would be saying the same thing about a mother named Lila (as I recall) who was pro-bush and pro-war until her son died. Her reaction would be another case of sad, manipulative behavior and attempts to get attention.
I’m sorry. I think it is you who needs therapy that you can even second-guess how a mother’s grief manifests itself. To me, that is the height of arrogance. I guess the only allowable reaction for you to losing a son is to grieve quietly and invisibly. Sorry, i don’t presume to dictate to anyone how they should grive for a son . . . or a daughter . . . or a spouse. That is between them and their conscience, god or whatever. I will not judge it.
Norah spews:
Richard Pope: I hope you’re wrong about what Bonneville might prefer to have..after all, Seattle isn’t SLC. However, some of the shows in the lineup you mention are ones I remember KIRO having on Sundays in the mid-90’s when Bonneville was still the owner. They had the Hour of Decision (Billy Graham) in the evenings–I remember because it’d come on after the Mariners games. I think they had various church progams on Sunday morning, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Sunday evenings, followed by Jim French’s Imagination Theater (“modern” radio drama, like the Twilight Zone thing the SLC station has), followed by When Radio Was (old-time radio shows). They had 60 Minutes and possibly Meet the Press (could a CBS affiliate air an NBC show)?
But this is the 00’s so hopefully they’d have a much different lineup now, at least I hope so.
Norah spews:
Geez, I didn’t mean to say “hopefully” and “I hope so” in the same sentence. How lame.
christmasghost spews:
skagit….are you a mother? maybe you are a dad….but that’s pretty different. i admit that i didn’t waste my time watching michael moore’s cut and paste sideshow…i try to avoid watching aimless propaganda.[from either ‘side’] i had a gut feeling about the movie and i was right.
i “know” she is using her son because i have done alot of reading about her son and his views. have you? he wanted to be a soldier and he was doing what he wanted to…and from minute one she did not approve. she made it very clear to him.most mothers don’t want to see their sons go off to war. that’s understandable. but since she couldn’t make him do what she wanted while he was alive [not join the military] she is trashing what he believed in after death.
“I’m sorry. I think it is you who needs therapy that you can even second-guess how a mother’s grief manifests itself. To me, that is the height of arrogance. I guess the only allowable reaction for you to losing a son is to grieve quietly and invisibly. Sorry, i don’t presume to dictate to anyone how they should grive for a son”
don’t be ridiculous….and how do you know what i have had to grieve for? you see…you don’t.
real grief never manifests itself as a one woman “look at me, look at me” sideshow where you trash the memory and everything they stood for of the one you lost.
that’s just called insanity or narcissism…..
skagit spews:
A gut feeling and you were right? Judging a movie you didn’t see? That’s exactly my point.
You have no right or credibility in judging that which you don’t know.
I’ll bet you have a lot of judgments about blacks too . . . and muslims.
and how do you know what i have had to grieve for?
I don’t have a clue who or what you grieve for. That’s the difference between us. I admit that I don’t have a clue. You are entitled to grieve any way you wish.
If you are a parent, can you even imagine yourself cashing in on one of your children’s death? But, you can easily see someone else doing it? My, I’m sorry for you. I really am.
christmasghost spews:
skagit…try to make some sense at least. when you said “If you are a parent, can you even imagine yourself cashing in on one of your children’s death?”
that’s my point exactly…….no i cannot imagine doing that myself. and that’s what i am saying. it doesn’t even take any imagination to recognize it when you see it though….and that’s what sheehan is doing. capitolizing on her son’s death to gain attention for herself.it’s sad and appalling.
and about moore’s cut and paste fest…come on, get real.do you actually claim that because you SAW it that somehow makes it a valid movie and not jst a cheap piece of propaganda? i ,personally ,can’t belive you were dim enough to waste the money.[hint…you are a progressive liberal, aren’t you supposed to be giving that “excess” cash to a homeless person?] have you seen the law suits? the filed complaints?
and where is mikey anyway? under the bus tires somewhere?
geez….typical nutty progressive…..you were there MAN you saw it……WOW……
christmasghost spews:
and ,no, i almost forgot about your claim that i must have it in for blacks? are you nuts? no i don’t….but you, yourself, sure seem to be fixated. and let me guess….you are not black yourself but you are speaking for them because as a liberal progressive you just know better, don’t you? whew…..
and muslims….yep you got me there. have you ever lived in a middle eastern country? no? didn’t think so…well i have so you can get back to me after you have actually seen it for yourself. islam is just code for stupid violent men abusing women….period.
christmasghost spews:
skagit…i almost forgot. this really made me laugh…thank you! “skagit says:
Well, we finally completely disagree.”
you could hear that giant WHEW!!!!! right through the computer screen. afraid they were going to take away your unprogressive decoder ring because you and i agreed on something, hmmmmmmmmm?
you have alot more in common with lenin’s loyal subjects than you think already……..
skagit spews:
…no i cannot imagine doing that myself. and that’s what i am saying. . . . but I know it when I see it.
Do you hear yourself?
I see her as a woman and mother trying to prevent other mothers and fathers from losing kids and trying to prevent kids from dying. To me, it is a simple as that.
It is you who are inventing the narrative for someone else. Why can’t you take your biases out of the picture and just let her be? You can disagree with her points, actions and beliefs all you want. But, to question her relationship with her son? To accuse her of intentions of which you have no understanding or knowledge other than what she claims.
You don’t like her message so you call her names and accuse her of something that you can’t imagine doing yourself. So, who made you arbiter of all that is right in the world? Who made you expert on who is a good mother and who isn’t. Some of us think she is more courageous than those of you who sit at home and do nothing while children die.
I find that . . . well, I don’t know the words that describe such arrogance.
because you SAW it that somehow makes it a valid movie
Not at all. I said that it makes my judgment of the movie valid. Apparently, not only are you clairvoyant and can ascertain a woman’s motives better than she can, you are also clairvoyant and know if movies are valid and/or worthwhile without seeing them. BTW, I never said it was accurate, valid, not valid, inaccurate, etc. I simply mentioned an example from the movie that related to Sheehans. You were unable to respond intellectually to my example because you didn’t see it. Simply say so.
Reminds me of Bush. (laughing here) He didn’t need facts to send us to war . . . just feelings and beliefs.
I’m beginning to see what is wrong with the world. Save me, please, from people who know what I should believe, think and feel.
This little dialogue we’ve had reflects perfectly the differences between liberals and conservatives. I want the opportunity to live my life my way. You want to tell me how I should live my life based on your beliefs and feelings. Notice I didn’t include facts. . . so far, I haven’t seen any facts in your conversation.
Now, reread the last three posts and measure the escalation of your emotionalism. I’m sorry you can’t keep it in perspective. It is just a conversation. Sheehan is just a parent like you. I am not here to judge your parenting skills or beliefs any more than I am here to judge Sheehan’s. But, I do respect the good she’s trying to do.
christmasghost spews:
skagit…emotion? where? don’t be silly.
“I’m beginning to see what is wrong with the world. Save me, please, from people who know what I should believe, think and feel.”
um…..have you read what you just wrote? just asking. because if that’s really the way you feel then you should be very upset with the democrats in office. isn’t that what liberals especially the “progressive” kind are always trying to do? legislate the internet, reinstate the draft , add more taxes ad nauseum. how about the nanny mentality….tax cigarettes because you don’t want people to smoke. if you don’t want adults to smoke then why not make them illegal? [and besides…can you name one time when someone got in a car and lit up a ciggie and mowed down a family of five versus alcohol consumption/driving deaths?] because then you democrats wouldn’t get the TAX MONEY and that’s all it’s about.admit that, will you.[i will give you one thing though…the GOP lead “war on drugs” is stupid and a waste of time money and people. and prison space.]
i am not judging sheehan without first having done the research. have you done that?
and these aren’t ‘children’ that are dying…they are grown men and women who made the choice to be soldiers….so don’t insult them by calling them children.[talk about wanting to tell people how to think…you are as guilty as sin in that department, are you not?] i don’t see any of you getting upset when police officers are killed while on duty….do you go out and scream that “the man” has set up these “poor hapless fools” and claim that they were lied to and didn’t know they could get killed while on duty like you do with soldiers? it’s insulting to the soldiers and you know it…it’s really very condescending don’t you think?
you are being delusional if you think conservatives [and not liberals ] want to tell people how to think. unless of course we are talking about criminal activities, and then you guys are all for giving criminals more rights than honest people.
and of course the conversation reminded you of BUSH…natch, you silly twit….you are a PROGRESSIVE LIBERAL are you not?…E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G reminds you of bush. what will all of you do when bush is no longer in the white house? who will be the enemy then? half the american public?
because as everyone with eyes and ears knows liberals need a “bad guy” to make them look good.
it’s sad and a shame that this is the way that american politics have headed but i am sure things will balance out. the next generation coming along is alot more conservative than the one before…..i think that will make it quite interesting. and ,if you think about it, it’s the natural way of things. kids always go against what their parents stand for when in the process of growing up…at least for awhile.and ,tell me, just how liberal are the professors at college these days?do you think they just might be the ones that are rebelled against? this isn’t the 60’s honey…so you better get used to it.
skagit spews:
I’m not your honey.
Because you hate her politics, you hate her.
I think we’re done, don’t you?
christmasghost spews:
wow…that was so fast. interesting.
i don’t hate anyone…and we are done because i don’t agree with you? very interesting.
i find sheehan a sad, sad person who is going to have a huge crash and all the liberals that used her grief to manipulate her will be no where to be found when that crash comes.
tell me one thing. you stated that you admire the “good she is trying to do”
what is that exactly? does she visit the wounded soldiers and help them? how about all the money she is spending from “donors” on herself…do you think that if she really wanted to do some good she could start by helping out a soldier’s widow and kids with the bills? [oh wait…she wouldn’t be getting the attention then would she? not the kind she wants] or is she too busy flying around and visiting vile dictators and getting her picture taken? you have been in seattle too long ,my friend, if you think that real good is accomplished by sitting on one’s arse and sucking up to famous people while having your picture taken.isn’t this the typical liberal stance? “i’m all for the cause if someone hands me a glass of wine and tells me exactly what i want to hear.”
sad….very sad.
skagit spews:
CG: we’re done because you aren’t saying anything new and your rhetoric has become emotional and derisive ranting.
Is there anything in your last diatribe that is even remotely objective or factual?
