Drinking with Dwight

by Goldy — Monday, 1/5/09, 2:14 pm

The Newport Hills chapter of Drinking Liberally meets tonight, 7-10PM, at the Mustard Seed Grill and Pub, 5608 119th Ave SE, in Bellevue, and I’m told that Washington State Democratic Party Chair Dwight Pelz will be stopping by.

Of course, the Seattle chapter will be meeting tomorrow night as usual, at the Montlake Ale House, although I’ll be arriving late after moderating the King County Democrats’ elections director candidate forum, 7PM at the Renton Carpenters Hall, 231 Burnett Ave. N.

    Tensor's parent's rusted car spews:

    Monday, 1/5/09 at 2:40 pm

    Subject: Seattle’s big snow poem..

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and next to the Sound
The streets were still frozen, with snow on the ground
The Greyhounds quit running, no matter what fare
    And the garbage men said they couldn’t be there;
The children were driving Queen Anne in their sleds
While roofs were collapsing on old people’s heads
And mamma in her boots and I in my cap,
Were stuck in the snow it was such a trap,
When at the Home Depot there arose such a clatter,
I left my car there to see what was the matter.
A group of sad souls was waving their cash
They couldn’t buy shovels they were gone in a flash.
The tires were spinning and just couldn’t go
And chains lay broken in old dirty snow
Then what did my eyes look over and see?
    Eight representatives of WDOT
With a politician so lively and quick
I knew in a moment it was Mayor Nick.
More rapid than gun bans his excuses came,
To save our environment the roads stay the same,
On Broadway! On Boren! On Yesler and Denny!
To clear off these roads would cost such a penny!
Sliding down Thomas and over the wall!
The busses hung over and ready to fall!
He still insisted it wasn’t his fault
As the world’s greenest mayor he couldn’t use salt
So snowy Seattle continued to stew
And Mayor St. Nick did not have a clue.
Then later that morning, I heard on the set
That people got sick while de-icing a jet
And that others couldn’t get on the ferry
And the city had decided to close down Cherry.
And an accident closed the I-90 bridge,
And that people couldn’t drive up on Phinney Ridge.
That shovels, and salt had just flown off the shelf,
    And I laughed when I heard it in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
    He tried to convey we had nothing to dread;
He spoke many words, but did little work,
I knew that I never would vote for this jerk.
And thumbing his nose at his citizens’ woes,
He arrogantly walked on the path that he chose.
He went to his limo and refused to yield,
And left to get solar panels placed on Qwest Field.
But I heard him exclaim, as he skidded past me,
“Happy Christmas to all, and I’d give it a “B”.”

I’m real disappointed in Bill Richardson.
I thought he was a solid pick…until you start looking at his past actions.
    Clearly Pay-to-play…the Democrat Theme Song.

Eric Holder will be the albatross around Obama’s neck.

If Obama appoints Richardson KNOWING about this investigation….I wonder how many other appointments were appropriately vetted??

If what the neo-cons say is true–that an Obama economic stimulus will lead to inflation (see 1973) in spite of lowering unemployment, wouldn’t the effect also be a rise in housing prices, giving people more wiggle room to renegotiate the terms of their mortgages, with more jobs providing more affordability to make their new payments?

A bitter pill to swallow, but I see no alternative being offered other then “prosperity is right around the corner”, “let the market adjust”, etc. Me thinks the private sector wants the market to adjust as long as possible, in spite of the social consequences, so they can get a better buy on their investments when the bottom is reached. That’s why they’re holding onto all of the taxpayer cash we just gave ’em.

If Obama does what Sweden did–and created a bank to contain all of these viral loans and derivatives, gave jobs to aggressive managers who could focus on minimizing the losses, while creating a loan vehicle to thaw credit for consumers wishing to refinance, I’m sure the bankers would be shitting in their pants.

Me thinks that Obama’s plan is the middle road, and will likely result in little more then a brief rally, before things tank again…

@Cynical. I’ll ask the question. It’s actually a good question. I’ll git some answers and “bring-em’ to ya!”

Although the answer might be “haven’t the foggiest, you’ll have to ask the Gov”.

    Thanks, Goldy, for the plug.

Here’s one for the Atheist Progressive Lunatics to mull over tonite while getting a buzz on:

An atheist was walking through the woods.

    ‘What majestic trees!

    ‘What powerful rivers!

‘What beautiful animals! he said to himself.

As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him.

He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him.

He ran as fast as he could up the path.

He looked over his shoulder & saw that the bear was closing in on him.

He looked over his shoulder again, & the bear was even closer.

He tripped & fell on the ground.

He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw & raising his right paw to strike him.

At that instant the Atheist cried out, ‘Oh my God!’

    Time Stopped.

    The bear froze.

    The forest was silent.

As a bright light shone upon them, a voice came out of the sky.

‘You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don’t exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer’?

The atheist looked directly into the light, ‘It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a Christian’?

    ‘Very Well,’ said the voice.

The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head & spoke:

‘Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Dwight may need to find the Governor before he asks her what the heck she is gonna do!

    From today’s Seattle Times–

Gov. Chris Gregoire’s whereabouts are unknown
Gov. Chris Gregoire is out of state, but her office won’t say where she is.

    OLYMPIA, Wash. —
Gov. Chris Gregoire is out of state, but her office won’t say where she is.

Gregoire was set to be the keynote speaker Tuesday at a pre-legislative session forum sponsored by The Associated Press, but her office canceled Monday afternoon. Legislative director Marty Brown will stand in for Gregoire at the forum.

Spokesman Pearse Edwards said that Gregoire will be making an announcement tomorrow morning, and that no further information would be released before then.

I heard Dwight sent Paul in his place. Much shorter drive for Paul than it was for Mark.

    The Debate that never was!?!

I attended the Candidates Forum at the Thurston County Dems meeting tonight hoping to see the two contenders for Democratic Party Chair, Dwight Pelz and Mark Hintz, square off. But as you now know, Dwight was a “no show” at this first debate. Paul Barendt stood in for him.

Even though I was there I can’t see why Paul did it. Paul acknowledged that it was Obama’s groundswell movement that gave us such an overwhelming victory in WA State. Paul also allowed that Dwight and the State Party should be credited with “handling” the massive turnout that Obama intigated.

When a question from the audience asked what were the candidates’ “vision” for the Party Paul understandably declined to answer for Dwight. So we don’t really know what the current Chair sees in the future for maintaining the “Campaign for Change” legacy that Obama has bestowed on us.

It was disappointing that so many Thurston County Dems, Mark Hintz and Paul Barendt weren’t able to have that dialogue with Chairman Pelz as he is seeking to lead the Party again. As an Officer of the Party myself, I hope to have dedicated leadership that will inspire us to move forward together.

We must insist upon the need for more open communication between grass/netroots and Party activists if we are going to meet the serious economic challenges we face in WA today.

When Democrats come together for discussion, our leaders must be there.

    Luis Moscoso
    Secretary, WA State Democrats

My response to Luis @ Washblog:

Thank you, Luis, I understand your disappointment.
I’m chapter leader for the Newport Hills Drinking Liberally Chapter. Several times during the campaign season I ran into Dwight Pelz at some event or another, and asked if he would attend one of my monthly Drinking Liberally events. He said he would. Finally, last October, we settled on a date – January 5th.

Dwight was the event. He gave a 15-20 minute presentation about the workings of the Washington State party apparatus, the value of political parties, and the relationship between the State Democratic party and the Obama organization.

He then answered a whole bunch of questions for a very long period of time.

Who was there? Rank and file Democrats: At least a half dozen PCO’s, a DNC committee person, the 41st LD Chair and several board members, a city council member, a former city council member, a state representative, and a bunch of local progressives.

Drinking Liberally in Newport Hills is an organization that exists for the purpose of getting people involved in progressive grass roots politics at the local level.

I applaud Dwight Pelz for being accessible to rank and file Democrats and for honoring a commitment he made months in advance.

I’m sorry our event conflicted with yours, but I think Dwight did the right thing by making his best effort to accommodate both events.

Area Coordinator & PCO, 41st District Democrats

    Robert –

Thank you for you response. First of all this was not my event. It was put on by the Thurston County Dems. They are the ones who lost out. I work in Olympia so I was there to watch and speak to the audience about my own race for re-election as State Party Secretary.

It’s my understanding that this scheduling conflict was only discovered at the last minute. But I don’t know all the details here. With all the buzz about the upcoming Chair’s election on Jan 24 it’s hard to see how this double-booking wasn’t discovered sooner.

Be that as it may, this incident certainly has raised a lot of concern for Party members. Let’s all get back to the business of discussing what kind of Party leadership we really need to support Pres-Elect Obama and Gov Gregoire in the most diffiult time our country and our state will face since the Great Depression.

    Yours,
    Luis
